The safest fix is to identify the game requesting it and use that game’s launcher to verify, repair, or reinstall its original files instead of downloading a random DLL.
What this file actually does
ApexFrameworkSHIPPING_x86.dll belongs to NVIDIA APEX, technology associated with NVIDIA PhysX and physics-enabled games. Older Unreal Engine 3 titles and other games using APEX integrations may load it for physics features.
The x86 suffix matters: this is a 32-bit library intended for a 32-bit game executable, even if Windows 10 or Windows 11 is 64-bit. SHIPPING is a release-build designation used by the game, not a separate Windows runtime.
The filename does not identify one specific game. It has appeared in installations and depot manifests associated with older titles including Deadpool, King’s Quest, Sanctum, Fable Anniversary, BioShock Infinite, and other PhysX-based games. The correct copy depends on the game and its build. Public catalogues list at least version 1.1.0.1 as a 32-bit file, but that does not make it a universal replacement.

A legitimate copy normally sits inside the game’s installation directory, often in a path resembling:
<Game folder>BinariesWin32
<Game folder>BinariesWin
It should not normally be copied to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Fix 1: Identify the game requesting the DLL
Do not begin by searching for the filename online. First determine which program displays the error.
- Read the title bar and message box carefully. The affected game’s name is often visible.
- If you launch through Steam, open Steam, select Library, and search for the game you started.
- For a desktop shortcut, right-click it and select Properties. The Target field shows the executable path.
- For a running error process, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, right-click the relevant process if present, and choose Open file location. - In File Explorer, inspect the folder containing the game’s
.exe. Look forBinariesWin32,BinariesWin, or a similar application subfolder.
The game name is essential because two games can use different APEX builds. A file copied from another title may have the same name but still be incompatible.

This is the most likely solution when the DLL is missing or corrupted.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to compare the installation and redownload damaged or missing files.
- Restart Windows, then launch the game again.
Valve documents this process for missing, corrupted, and launch-related game files.
Other launchers
Use the launcher’s equivalent repair command. It may be called Verify, Verify and Repair, Scan and Repair, or Repair Installation.
After the repair completes, check the game’s actual installation directory. The restored file should be beside the game’s other APEX or PhysX libraries, not in a Windows system folder.

If verification reports success but Windows still shows the same error, continue with the checks below. Verification can miss a file that antivirus immediately removes, and it cannot correct every dependency or compatibility problem.
Reinstall the affected game
If verification repeatedly fails or the launcher cannot restore the file:
- Back up saved games if they are stored outside cloud synchronization.
- Uninstall the game from its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the game again from your official library or the publisher’s installer.
- Launch it before adding mods, overlays, custom DLLs, or compatibility tweaks.
For this type of file, reinstalling the program that installed it remains the definitive replacement method.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a game file. Do not restore an unfamiliar DLL simply because its filename matches the error.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the game stopped launching.
- Expand a detection and inspect its path.
- Restore or allow the item only if it is clearly inside the legitimate game installation and the detection has been confirmed as a false positive.
- Run the game’s file verification again so the launcher supplies a clean publisher-provided copy.
If Defender removes the file again, do not repeatedly whitelist it. Update Windows and Defender, scan the game folder, and contact the game publisher or launcher support. A DLL found in a temporary folder, email attachment, cracked software folder, or unrelated system directory deserves a full security investigation.
Microsoft notes that a restored quarantined file may be detected again. That behavior is a reason to verify the file’s origin, not a reason to download another copy.
Fix 4: Repair NVIDIA PhysX for older games
APEX is related to PhysX, but installing PhysX is not guaranteed to recreate an app-bundled apexframeworkshipping_x86.dll. Start with game verification because the exact APEX file may belong only to that title.
Install or repair NVIDIA PhysX when:
- the game explicitly reports a PhysX runtime error;
- several older PhysX games fail;
- the game includes a
Redist,Prerequisites, orSupportfolder containing a PhysX installer; - verification restores the APEX file but another PhysX DLL is still missing.
Use the PhysX installer supplied with the game first. If it is unavailable, obtain the regular PhysX System Software and its Legacy Installer from NVIDIA’s official support pages.

After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game without mods or overlays.
- If only one game still fails, verify that game’s files again.
- If every older PhysX game fails, investigate the graphics driver and the PhysX installation rather than copying DLLs between games.
Fix 5: Install the correct Microsoft runtimes
A message naming apexframeworkshipping_x86.dll does not always mean that file is the only missing component. Windows may be unable to load it because one of its dependencies is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can describe a dependency failure.
Install Microsoft’s official x86 Visual C++ Redistributable when the follow-up error names VCRUNTIME, MSVCP, or a similar Microsoft runtime. Use the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows because the affected game is 32-bit.
- Download the x86 package from Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Run
vc_redist.x86.exe. - Accept the license terms.
- Choose Install, or choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
This package does not normally recreate the APEX DLL. It repairs a different dependency class.
Install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime only when the game reports missing legacy DirectX components. DirectX is not an identified source for this exact APEX file, so it should not be the default response to this filename alone.
Fix 6: Remove incompatible replacements, mods, and overlays
If you already copied a DLL from another computer or download page, remove that replacement from the game folder and run the launcher’s verification process again. A wrong x86 version, a different APEX build, or a damaged file can produce:
- “not designed to run on Windows”;
- an entry-point error;
- an access-violation error;
- a crash immediately after startup.
Temporarily disable custom launch options, DLL injectors, graphics overlays, and mods. Test the untouched installation first. Also confirm that your shortcut points to the intended game installation rather than an old copy on another drive.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall the graphics driver
A driver update is more relevant when multiple older PhysX games fail, graphics applications are unstable, or the problem began after a driver change. It is not the normal way to restore one missing game-local DLL.
To check the installed driver:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Use the GPU manufacturer’s official support page to install a compatible driver.
- Choose a clean-install option if the manufacturer’s installer provides one.
- Restart Windows and test the affected games.
Do not use Device Manager’s generic Update driver command as proof that the newest vendor driver is installed. It may report that the best driver is already present while the vendor’s package contains a newer or more complete installation.

Manually comparing graphics-driver versions and selecting the correct package can be time-consuming, especially when several devices are listed. Reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when only that game is missing this DLL.

DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not normally restore a third-party, game-local APEX library, so use them when other Windows features are also malfunctioning or system corruption is suspected.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Verify the game files again.
Successful DISM and SFC results mean Windows repaired or found no protected-system-file problems. They do not prove that the game installation is fixed.
Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing which component changed makes troubleshooting harder. It is optional, and reinstalling the game remains the definitive fix for a missing app-local APEX file.

If the issue began immediately after a driver, update, or software installation, use System Restore:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Confirm the restore point and complete the wizard.
System Restore is a fallback for a suitable restore point. It is not a method for downloading or generating the DLL.
Why you should not use regsvr32
Do not run regsvr32 apexframeworkshipping_x86.dll. This is a game runtime library, not an ActiveX or COM component intended for self-registration.
regsvr32 expects the DLL to provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. A runtime library normally does not provide it, so the command produces a registration error and does not repair the game. Registering a DLL also would not resolve a missing dependency, wrong architecture, or corrupted game executable.
Why random DLL downloads and System32 copying fail
A standalone DLL download can be:
- the wrong APEX version for your game build;
- the wrong architecture;
- incomplete or damaged;
- bundled with unwanted software;
- unable to load because another dependency is missing.
Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts and may affect unrelated programs. Windows searches application directories according to the program’s loading behavior, so the correct location is normally the game’s own directory.
Use the official game launcher, the publisher’s installer, NVIDIA’s official PhysX packages, and Microsoft’s official runtime downloads. Do not use DLL download sites pages as a replacement source.

Is apexframeworkshipping_x86.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a 32-bit application library associated with NVIDIA APEX and PhysX-enabled games. It should normally remain with the game that installed it.
Which game uses this DLL?
The filename alone cannot identify the game. Several older games may ship APEX files, so inspect the error, shortcut, launcher, and installation folders before repairing anything.
Can I use a 64-bit DLL instead?
