How to Play Minecraft VR on Quest 2 Using QuestCraft or a PC

Play Minecraft VR on Quest 2 with QuestCraft directly on the headset, or use Vivecraft on a dedicated-GPU PC. Here are the current requirements, setup steps, and troubleshooting fixes.

The easiest way to play Minecraft in VR on a Quest 2 is QuestCraft, a standalone Quest port of Minecraft: Java Edition. You need a compatible Quest headset and, for normal play, a legitimate Minecraft Java account. The alternative is to run Java Edition with Vivecraft on a VR-capable Windows PC and stream or connect the headset through properly configured SteamVR software.

QuestCraft is not an official Mojang or Microsoft Quest release, and it is not Minecraft Bedrock. The official Minecraft download page currently presents Java & Bedrock for PC, but does not document an official Quest-native VR download or current Quest setup path.

Choose the right method

Method What you need Best for
QuestCraft Quest headset, SideQuest or GitHub installation, and normally a Minecraft Java account Playing Java Edition directly on the headset without a gaming PC
Vivecraft on PC Minecraft Java Edition, Java, Steam, SteamVR, a dedicated GPU, and compatible Quest-to-PC VR software Higher PC performance, PC mods, shaders, and a larger Java setup

QuestCraft is usually the practical choice if you want Minecraft VR without depending on a PC. Vivecraft is the better route if your PC already runs Java Edition well and you want the PC version’s flexibility.

Method 1: Play Minecraft VR directly on Quest 2 with QuestCraft

What QuestCraft is—and is not

QuestCraft is a standalone port of Minecraft: Java Edition for Meta Quest headsets. It uses Vivecraft and Pojlib; it is not an official Mojang/Microsoft Quest application. A compatible Quest device is required.

For normal play, you need a legitimate Minecraft Java account. QuestCraft 6.0.0 also lists a Demo mode for users without Java Edition, but that does not make QuestCraft an official free version of Minecraft. Check the project’s current release and support information before installing.

Current QuestCraft release

The current GitHub release listed in the supplied documentation is QuestCraft 6.0.0. It supports Minecraft Java versions up to 1.21.4 and includes fixes for Meta Quest software v71 and later, improved performance, an asset checker/updater, a log viewer, dynamic RAM allocation, automatic JRE updates, an updated interface, and a switch to Vivecraft OpenXR. Storage permissions were removed.

Use the project’s GitHub releases page or its official QuestCraft homepage. The homepage currently provides “Get it on SideQuest” and “Get on GitHub” options.

Install QuestCraft

  1. Open the QuestCraft homepage and choose the current SideQuest option, or obtain the release through the project’s GitHub page.
  2. Install the QuestCraft APK through SideQuest or another installation method identified by the project’s support page.
  3. Put on the headset and open QuestCraft using the location where your Quest OS lists applications installed from outside the official store. The exact menu labels can change with Quest OS updates, so do not rely on older guides that promise a fixed “Apps → Unknown Sources → QuestCraft” path.
  4. Launch QuestCraft and follow its current on-screen login, asset, and Java-version prompts.
  5. Sign in with your Minecraft Java account when prompted. Select a supported Java version—QuestCraft 6.0.0 lists support through 1.21.4—and allow the asset checker or updater to finish.
  6. Start a world or join a compatible multiplayer server.

QuestCraft 6.0.0 has an updated UI, so older screenshots and launcher instructions may not match what appears on your headset. The current support page does not publish a guaranteed, version-specific sequence of Quest OS menu labels.

QuestCraft troubleshooting

  • Login failure: confirm that you are using the correct Minecraft Java account and check the project’s current support resources. Login problems are one of the project’s identified common issue categories.
  • Version incompatibility: select a Minecraft version listed as supported by your QuestCraft release. QuestCraft does not automatically support every new Java release.
  • Performance problems: verify that the headset has adequate free space and that the asset update completed. QuestCraft 6.0.0 includes performance improvements and dynamic RAM allocation, but performance still depends on the headset and selected game settings.
  • Quest OS v71 or later: do not assume that v71 permanently breaks QuestCraft. Release 6.0.0 specifically lists fixes for v71+ issues.
  • Installation confusion: consult the current QuestCraft support page, SideQuest guidance, GitHub releases, and the project’s Discord rather than following an old menu path or permission guide.

Method 2: Run Minecraft VR on a PC with Vivecraft

The PC method runs Minecraft: Java Edition on the computer and adds VR through Vivecraft. Your Quest 2 must be exposed to the PC as SteamVR-compatible hardware through properly configured Quest-to-PC or SteamVR-emulation software. Vivecraft itself uses SteamVR to communicate with the headset.

PC requirements

  • Minecraft: Java Edition
  • Java
  • Steam and SteamVR, installed and configured
  • A VR-capable PC with a dedicated GPU
  • A SteamVR-compatible headset setup, including properly configured third-party SteamVR-emulation software for Quest 1 or Quest 2

Vivecraft cannot run VR through an Intel integrated GPU because Intel drivers do not support the required OpenGL VR path. A gaming laptop with both integrated and dedicated graphics can also launch Minecraft on the desktop while failing to display it in the headset.

Install Vivecraft

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher on the PC at least once so it creates the Minecraft folders. You do not need to launch the game.
  2. Close the launcher completely. Make sure the Minecraft Launcher is not running.
  3. Download the Vivecraft version that matches your Minecraft installation from the official Vivecraft downloads page.
  4. Run the Vivecraft installer.
  5. Leave the installer defaults in place unless a particular mod or installation requires another option.
  6. Select Install.
  7. Reopen the Minecraft Launcher. The Vivecraft profile should already be selected.
  8. If the profile is missing, open the Installations tab and enable the modded profiles checkbox near the top-right area.
  9. Start Steam and SteamVR, connect or wirelessly link the Quest 2 using your configured PC-VR software, and select Play from the Vivecraft profile.

If the installer will not run, Vivecraft’s FAQ says that Java 8 or newer is required.

Choose the correct Vivecraft version

Vivecraft support is version-specific. The current downloads page lists:

  • Anti-Slip Controller Grip Covers: grip covers are made of nice silicone material that effectively prevents sweat, dust, and scratches. Anti-slip bumps enhance the handgrip and feel.
  • Adjustable Knuckle Straps: knuckle straps make it possible to relax your hands without dropping the controllers. High-quality PU material offers extra durability and velcro design makes it easy to adjust the strap length to different needs.
  • Minecraft 1.20.4: Forge/Fabric mod through Modrinth; no standalone VR or 2D client is listed.
  • Minecraft 1.19.2: standalone Vivecraft 1.19.X plus Forge/Fabric mod.
  • Minecraft 1.18.2: standalone Vivecraft 1.18.X plus Forge/Fabric mod.
  • Minecraft 1.12.2: standalone Vivecraft 1.12.2 plus Forge support.

Older versions no longer receive updates. Vivecraft is available as both a standalone installer and, for applicable releases, a Forge/Fabric mod. Do not assume that the newest Minecraft release automatically has Vivecraft support.

Connect Quest 2 to the PC

Quest 2 must be recognized by the PC as SteamVR-compatible hardware. Vivecraft’s documentation does not prescribe one universal Quest connection application; use a properly configured Quest-to-PC or SteamVR-emulation solution supported by your hardware and network setup.

Older tutorials may refer to labels such as “Oculus Desktop app,” “Oculus Air Link,” “Settings → Experimental Features,” or “Meta Quest Link.” Those labels come from an older third-party procedure and are not guaranteed to match the current Meta software or Quest OS. Follow the current instructions for the connection software you are actually using.

Vivecraft controls and play modes

For motion-controlled VR, set Vivecraft to STANDING play mode. Steam must be running in addition to SteamVR. Vivecraft does not currently support gamepads without an external keyboard-and-mouse emulation mod.

Fix common PC problems

Minecraft opens on the desktop but not in the headset

Dual-GPU systems, especially gaming laptops, are a frequent cause. Force Java to use the dedicated GPU in Windows:

  1. Open Settings app → Graphics Settings.
  2. Choose Desktop App and select Browse.
  3. Select javaw.exe, then choose Add.
  4. Expand the new entry, choose Options, select High Performance, and choose Save.

SteamVR cannot detect the headset

If Vivecraft reports that it cannot detect the HMD, install and configure SteamVR and confirm that your third-party Quest emulation or PC-link software is working. SteamVR error 108 means “No HMD Found.”

If the error is 112: Log path not found, open SteamVR Settings → Developer Options → Log Path and set the log path.

  • Explore an expanding universe of over 500 titles across gaming, fitness, social/multiplayer and entertainment, including exclusive releases and totally unique VR experiences.

  • Come together in incredible social spaces and multiplayer arenas as you take in live events with friends and family, find your new workout crew or join adventures with fellow players.

Controllers do not respond

  • Make sure Steam is running as well as SteamVR.
  • Set Vivecraft to STANDING play mode.
  • If using ALVR, verify that the emulator version supports SteamVR Input correctly.

Headset crashes or powers off while loading

Vivecraft documents a Windows workaround: open Task Manager → Details, right-click OVRServer_x64, choose Set priority → High, and retry.

Improve low frame rates

  • In Minecraft Video Settings, reduce draw distance; Vivecraft recommends below 10 even on high-end systems.
  • In VR Settings → Stereo Rendering, reduce Render Scale.
  • Set SteamVR supersampling to 1.0, because Vivecraft render scale and SteamVR supersampling stack together.
  • Disable custom shaders and texture packs while troubleshooting.
  • Avoid excessive RAM allocation.

Fix constant stuttering

Vivecraft commonly attributes constant stuttering to Java garbage collection. Where available, try ZGC, allocate less RAM rather than more, make sure the PC has enough physical RAM, and close background applications.

Find crash logs

Useful diagnostic files include:

  • %appdata%/.minecraft/crash-reports/
  • .minecraft/logs/latest.log
  • launcher_log.txt in the Minecraft root when Java fails before normal logging
  • hs_err_pidXXX.log when the JVM itself crashes

Which option should you use?

Use QuestCraft if you want the simplest standalone Quest experience and do not want Minecraft rendered by a PC. Use Vivecraft if you have a dedicated-GPU PC, already use Java Edition, and are comfortable configuring SteamVR and a Quest-to-PC connection. QuestCraft avoids PC streaming, while Vivecraft generally offers the PC’s broader modding and rendering resources—but it also introduces more hardware and software failure points.
