FlightGear is the best genuinely free flight simulator for most PC players. It is open source, free to download, supports civilian flying across global scenery, and does not lock its main experience behind paid aircraft or maps. FlightGear 2024.1.6 is the project’s current stable, supported release.
There are worthwhile alternatives, but they serve different purposes: YSFlight is the best choice for very old PCs, DCS World is the strongest free starting point for combat aviation, and the X-Plane 12 demo is a restricted trial of a paid simulator—not complete freeware.

1. FlightGear: the best genuinely free flight simulator
FlightGear is the clearest answer if “free” means a complete simulator rather than a trial, subscription benefit, or free-to-start platform. The project releases it under the GNU General Public License, and says that both the simulator and its add-ons are free to download.
It is primarily a civilian simulator, suitable for exploring general aviation, airliners, helicopters, and other aircraft. Global scenery is fetched and updated automatically as you fly, so you do not have to download the entire world before starting. Multiplayer is available through FlightGear’s own servers, and VATSIM connectivity is supported.

FlightGear’s download page currently lists:
- Linux x86_64: AppImage, 329 MB
- macOS 11 or later: DMG, 67 MB
- Windows 10/11 x86_64: EXE installer, 83 MB
- Windows ARM64: not yet supported
The FlightGear wiki documents OpenGL 4.0 or higher as the practical minimum graphics requirement. The installer is small, but the scenery and aircraft you use can add substantially to local storage and download requirements.
What to expect from FlightGear
FlightGear is more flexible than polished commercial simulators, but that flexibility comes with variation. The bundled aircraft and default environment are the best place to begin. Once controls, sound, graphics, and loading work correctly, add third-party aircraft or scenery one item at a time.
Do not assume that every add-on works with every release. An aircraft made for an older major version may produce missing instruments, broken animations, blank panels, or non-working systems. Those symptoms often indicate an incompatible aircraft package rather than a failed simulator installation.
The current 2024.1.6 release includes several practical fixes, including a Qt 6.11 launcher issue, a crash caused by selecting an empty Nasal directory, OpenGL detection under Wayland, and an input-device dialog problem involving an empty device list. The in-simulator airports dialog also displays runway length in meters.

Best beginner setup
- Install FlightGear 2024.1.6 from the official download page.
- Start with a bundled aircraft and the default environment.
- Verify that your controls, sound, and graphics work before installing add-ons.
- Learn basic control, trimming, takeoff, and landing with one aircraft.
- Add third-party aircraft or scenery only after the base installation is stable.
Solo flying can work without a permanent Internet connection after the required program and scenery files are stored locally. Live weather, multiplayer, and on-demand scenery require connectivity.
2. YSFlight: the best free simulator for old PCs
YSFlight is the practical choice when modern simulators run poorly or take too long to load. It is a full freeware simulator rather than a time-limited demo or subscription product, with simple graphics, low storage demands, fast startup, and modest scenery and cockpit workloads.
That low overhead is also its defining compromise. YSFlight has dated visuals and a comparatively limited systems simulation. It is suitable for casual flying, basic aircraft handling, and lightweight multiplayer-style experimentation, but it is a poor choice for detailed airliner procedures, advanced avionics, or serious instrument practice.
Choose YSFlight when your priority is “will this run on an old computer?” Choose FlightGear when you want a broader civilian simulator and are willing to spend more time managing aircraft and scenery.

3. DCS World: the best free starting point for combat flight
DCS World is excellent if you specifically want military aviation, weapons, missions, and tactical flying. However, it is not completely free. The base platform and starter content are free, while most additional aircraft, terrain, and campaigns are sold separately.
The free installation is useful for judging the simulator’s flight modeling, missions, weapons, and controller support. It should not be treated as representative of every paid module, though: free aircraft do not necessarily offer the same cockpit and systems depth as paid full-fidelity modules.
DCS World is a poor match for unrestricted civilian route flying, broad general aviation, or civilian instrument practice. It also demands substantially more hardware and storage than lightweight freeware such as YSFlight. A weak office PC may struggle even if the simulator launches.
Bottom line on DCS: use it as a free entry point to combat simulation, not as your answer to “I want a completely free civilian flight simulator.”

4. X-Plane 12 Free Demo: useful trial, not freeware
Laminar Research offers a Free Demo of X-Plane 12 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The same installer can update an existing installation or install a purchased X-Plane product, but the demo itself is a restricted demonstration of a paid simulator.
Its listed minimum requirements are:
- 25 GB of disk space
- An Intel Core i3/i5/i7/i9 with four or more cores, or an AMD Ryzen 3/5/7/9 processor
- 8 GB of RAM
- An NVIDIA or AMD GPU supporting Vulkan 1.3, with at least 2 GB of VRAM
- No Intel GPU support for X-Plane 12
The demo is worthwhile when your question is whether your computer can run X-Plane 12 or whether you like its flight model and interface before purchasing. It is not the complete unrestricted version. If you own the Steam edition, update it only through Steam.

- Choose FlightGear for the best complete, open-source civilian simulator.
- Choose YSFlight if your computer is old, your storage is limited, or fast startup matters most.
- Choose DCS World for free combat aviation and a path toward paid high-fidelity modules.
- Choose the X-Plane 12 demo only when you want to test a paid simulator before buying it.
Microsoft Flight Simulator does not belong on a list of genuinely free simulators merely because it may be available through a subscription, trial promotion, or cloud service. Subscription access is not the same as freeware. The older Microsoft Flight Simulator X demo is likewise a restricted demo, not a complete free product.
Common problems and fixes
Low frame rates
Lower shadows, reflections, anti-aliasing, cloud detail, traffic, and visibility distance before deciding that the simulator is unusable. “Free” does not mean lightweight: DCS World can overwhelm an office PC, and even browser-based 3D simulators can perform poorly on weak integrated graphics.

On a laptop with a discrete GPU, check that the simulator is using it rather than integrated graphics. The operating system or GPU control panel normally provides the application-level graphics preference.
Twitching or unexplained control movement
Duplicate assignments are a common cause. Check that only one device is assigned to each aileron, elevator, rudder, and throttle axis. Also calibrate the controller at the operating-system level first. Add simulator dead zone only when needed to suppress genuine center-position noise; excessive dead zone makes precise flying harder.
Missing gauges or broken aircraft systems
Test a bundled or default aircraft. If it works, the problem is probably an outdated or incompatible add-on aircraft. Find a package intended for your installed major release instead of repeatedly reinstalling the simulator.
Menus are too small
In FlightGear, use Debug > Cycle GUI Style to cycle the graphical interface style. The FlightGear wiki documents this as a workaround for menu text that is difficult to read on high-DPI or large displays.

They can support procedure practice, cockpit familiarization, and basic instrument-flow rehearsal, but none automatically becomes an approved training device. FlightGear and DCS World do not replace instruction in a real aircraft.
Aircraft-specific switch logic, performance, avionics behavior, and limitations must be checked against the aircraft’s documentation. A simulator can help you rehearse a workflow while still modeling a particular aircraft or system incorrectly.
Do you need a joystick?
No. A keyboard and mouse can get an aircraft airborne, but an analog joystick or gamepad makes smooth rotation, trimming, formation flying, and landing substantially easier. A dedicated throttle and rudder pedals are optional upgrades rather than prerequisites for trying any of these simulators.
