To drink sake in Ghost of Yotei, hold Down on the D-pad. Atsu drinks from a sake bottle or jar and restores a moderate amount of Spirit. Tap Down instead when you want to heal. Drinking three times in a row makes Atsu vomit and leaves her vulnerable, so two drinks should be treated as the practical combat limit.
How to drink sake
- Make sure you have sake available.
- During gameplay, hold Down on the D-pad.
- Atsu drinks the sake and restores a moderate amount of Spirit.
Do not rely on a brief press. Down is context-sensitive: tap Down to heal, while holding it triggers the sake action. This is why a press held slightly too long can consume sake when you intended to recover health. The controller behavior is documented by Shacknews and is also reflected in player reports.

What sake actually restores
Sake is not a direct health-healing item. It restores Spirit, shown as orbs above the health bar in the lower-left corner of the HUD. Spirit is then used for healing and special combat moves. If Atsu needs health immediately, drinking sake may only be the first step: you still need enough Spirit to perform the healing action.
The available guides describe the refill as moderate, but do not establish a reliable fixed number of Spirit orbs restored per drink. Treat sake as a useful Spirit reserve rather than a guaranteed full refill. See Game8’s Spirit guide for the resource’s other uses.

Why you should stop after two drinks
Each drink increases intoxication effects, including visible screen blur. The blur makes it harder to read enemy attacks and fight accurately. On the third consecutive drink, Atsu vomits and is left open to attack, according to multiple guides covering the mechanic.
That creates a simple combat rule:
- First drink: restores Spirit but increases intoxication.
- Second drink: can provide more Spirit, but the screen becomes harder to read.
- Third consecutive drink: triggers vomiting and a dangerous vulnerable state.
Do not drink a third time just because Spirit is still low. Create distance, finish the encounter, or use another way to recover before attempting another drink. The third-drink penalty is usually a worse trade than the additional Spirit is worth. For more detail on the intoxication and vomiting behavior, see All Things How’s guide.
When it is safe to drink
Drinking takes an opening, so avoid using sake while an enemy is already within striking range or winding up an attack. The safest opportunities are generally after creating space, when the last nearby enemy is down, or during a lull in an encounter.

- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
If you are at low health, remember the distinction between the two actions. A quick tap of Down is the healing input; holding Down begins drinking. Keep the press short when your priority is health, and only hold it when you deliberately want Spirit.

Camp
Camping fully restores Spirit. Cooking a meal at camp also grants bonus Spirit and provides a temporary perk lasting one in-game day. If you can safely reach camp, this is a more dependable reset than repeatedly drinking during a fight.
Combat actions
Spirit can replenish through combat, including parries, kills, advanced techniques, and Standoff kills. Use these actions to rebuild the resource instead of treating sake as the only source of Spirit.

Bamboo Strikes
Bamboo Strikes increase Spirit capacity; they are not an immediate in-combat refill. If the input is difficult, the retrieved guide identifies the relevant accessibility option as Accessibility > Rapid Button Presses – Simplified.
Where to find more sake
Sake can be found while exploring, including in camps and houses containing resources. Additional reported sources include reward caches in liberated towns, reward caches at cleared locations, and the merchant Taro the Scavenger.
Empty sake bottles are not necessarily useless: they can be thrown to shatter them and distract enemies. That gives the item a utility beyond its Spirit-restoring use, even after the drink has been consumed.

Common mistakes
Holding Down when you meant to heal
Tap Down for healing. Holding the input activates drinking and applies the intoxication effect.
Assuming sake restores health
Sake restores Spirit, not health directly. After drinking, you may still need to spend Spirit on healing.
Drinking three times in one sequence
The third consecutive drink triggers vomiting and leaves Atsu exposed. Stop after two drinks and look for a safer recovery option.

Drinking in the middle of an attack

Quick reference
| Goal | Correct action |
|---|---|
| Heal Atsu | Tap Down on the D-pad |
| Restore Spirit with sake | Hold Down on the D-pad |
| Avoid the vomiting penalty | Do not take a third consecutive drink |
| Fully restore Spirit | Camp |
| Increase Spirit capacity | Complete Bamboo Strikes |
Bottom line
Hold Down to drink sake, but remember that it restores Spirit rather than health. Tap Down for healing, drink only when you have a safe opening, and stop at two consecutive drinks. The third drink causes vomiting and vulnerability, while camping, combat actions, and other Spirit systems provide safer alternatives.
