Unity announced on May 1, 2024, that Matthew Bromberg would become its chief executive officer, president, and a member of its board. He formally took over on May 15, succeeding interim CEO Jim Whitehurst as Unity tried to rebuild developer confidence, sharpen its product focus, and improve growth and profitability.
What Unity announced
Bromberg’s appointment was announced on May 1 but did not take effect until May 15, 2024. Unity appointed him to three roles: CEO, president, and Class III director. The company’s announcement and subsequent SEC filing confirm the transition.
Jim Whitehurst, who had served as interim CEO and president since October 2023, became Unity’s executive chair and senior adviser. Unity said Whitehurst would also return to Silver Lake as a managing director. Roelof Botha moved from board chair to lead independent director.
Who is Matthew Bromberg?
Bromberg is best described as a former Zynga chief operating officer—not Zynga’s former CEO. He held the COO role from August 2016 through November 2021, overseeing the company’s worldwide game studios and work across product development, design, technology, data, and analytics.

Before Zynga, Bromberg held senior roles at Electronic Arts, including senior vice president of strategy and operations for EA’s mobile division and group general manager for BioWare studios. He was also president and CEO of Major League Gaming. At the time Unity announced his appointment, he was a senior adviser to Blackstone and served on the boards of Bumble, Monzo, and Blast; he had previously been a Fitbit director.
His education includes a bachelor’s degree in English from Cornell University and a law degree from Harvard Law School. Unity described him as having more than 20 years of experience in the gaming industry.
Why the appointment mattered
Bromberg inherited Unity during the aftermath of one of the company’s most damaging periods. In 2023, Unity’s proposed Runtime Fee triggered widespread anger among developers and customers. Unity later revised the policy, but the dispute raised broader concerns about pricing predictability, trust, and the company’s relationship with the creators who rely on its engine.

The appointment should not be described as officially a response to the Runtime Fee controversy: Unity did not state that as the reason for selecting Bromberg. However, he took charge while the company was dealing with its consequences, alongside a portfolio reset, cost-structure changes, pressure on revenue and profitability, and the need to refocus on its core businesses.

Bromberg therefore became responsible for turning that reset into a longer-term operating and product strategy.
The product and commercial challenge
One immediate test was Unity 6, which Unity announced would launch globally on October 17, 2024. The company positioned the release around performance, stability, long-term support, and continued feature development. Delivering a dependable major engine release was important not only technically, but also as a way to demonstrate that Unity remained a reliable technology partner.
Bromberg’s background offered relevant experience in game studios, mobile development, analytics, product operations, and monetization. That combination helps explain the appointment: Unity is not only an engine company, but also operates creator-focused advertising, monetization, and other businesses.
At the same time, Bromberg was not primarily known as a game-engine architect or graphics researcher. That is an analytical distinction, not a criticism. His experience was more operational and commercial than technology-specialist in character, which created both a potential advantage in execution and a challenge in earning the confidence of developers focused on engine quality.
What Bromberg said—and what it did not prove
Unity’s board presented Bromberg as a proven leader with a customer-first mindset and deep gaming-industry knowledge. Bromberg said he wanted to provide an integrated platform for creators while accelerating Unity’s revenue growth and profitability.

Those were management’s goals, not evidence that a turnaround had already occurred. The appointment created an opportunity to assess Unity against four practical measures:
- Developer trust: whether pricing and policy decisions became clearer and more predictable.
- Product execution: whether Unity 6 and subsequent development work delivered the stability and performance customers expected.
- Commercial discipline: whether Unity could improve profitability without repeating disruptive monetization decisions.
- Industry fit: whether Bromberg’s studio, mobile, data, and operating experience translated effectively to running an engine platform.
These goals could conflict. Supporting long-term engine development costs money, while Unity was also under pressure to control spending. Monetization and advertising growth could improve the business, but aggressive commercial changes could further damage creator confidence.

Later Unity communications continued to identify Bromberg as president and CEO. Unity’s 2025 proxy confirms that Whitehurst served as interim CEO until May 15, 2024, when Bromberg became the permanent CEO.

Unity subsequently announced the global launch of Unity 6 on October 17, 2024, and described the release as focused on enhanced performance and stability. Later company communications also highlighted product and engineering investment, leadership changes including CTO Steve Collins, advertising developments, and an operational and financial reset. In its FY2024 results announcement, Unity quoted Bromberg expressing optimism about Unity 6, the revised pricing model, and progress in advertising.
Those later statements are Unity’s own assessment rather than independent proof of a successful turnaround. The appointment’s significance was that it placed a permanent gaming-industry operator in charge at a moment when Unity had to reconcile three demands: rebuild trust with developers, invest in its core technology, and restore profitable growth.
