Error 0x80040154 usually means “Class not registered,” not that your Xbox account or Game Pass subscription is invalid. On Windows 11, it commonly points to a damaged or missing Microsoft Store registration, Xbox app component, or Gaming Services installation. Start with Windows and Store updates, then clear the Store cache, repair the affected apps, and reinstall Gaming Services only if necessary.

What Xbox error 0x80040154 means

0x80040154 is the Windows/COM error commonly associated with Class not registered (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG). In an Xbox context, Windows cannot find or correctly register a component that the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, or another related app needs.

The code is generic. It does not identify one confirmed Xbox fault, and it is not, by itself, proof of an account, subscription, network, or hardware problem. The correct fix depends on where it appears:

  • When Xbox opens
  • During Microsoft account sign-in
  • While installing or updating a game
  • When Gaming Services is installed
  • When Microsoft Store opens or installs an app
  • When Xbox Game Bar or another Xbox-related app launches

Note the exact action that triggers the error before troubleshooting. That detail helps distinguish an Xbox-only problem from a Microsoft Store or Windows-wide failure. Microsoft describes the underlying registration error in its Windows component documentation, while its current Store guidance recommends updating, repairing, resetting, and reinstalling affected Store apps.

Microsoft’s explanation of “Class not registered”
Microsoft’s Microsoft Store app troubleshooting guide

Before you begin

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Confirm that the PC is online.
  3. Open Microsoft Store and sign in with the Microsoft account used for Xbox or Game Pass.
  4. Go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
  5. Restart again if Windows installs updates.
  6. Open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates. Install updates for Xbox-related apps if they appear.

Windows 11 menu names vary between builds. Microsoft Store may appear under Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or under Settings > Apps > System components. Use the search box in Settings if you cannot find it.

Fix 1: Clear the Microsoft Store cache

This is a low-risk first step and does not remove installed games.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe.
  3. Select OK.
  4. Wait while the blank Command Prompt window closes and Microsoft Store opens.
  5. Restart Windows and test Xbox again.

If nothing happens, try opening Microsoft Store manually from Start. If Store is missing, will not open, or cannot install any app, continue with Store repair rather than repeatedly running wsreset.exe. Do not treat community suggestions such as wsreset -i as a universally supported replacement for the standard command.

Microsoft Q&A guidance on wsreset.exe

Fix 2: Repair or reset Xbox and Microsoft Store

Repair the app before resetting it. Repair is less destructive and attempts to fix the installation without clearing its stored app data.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Xbox.
  4. Select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Test Xbox.
  7. If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset.

Reset is more aggressive: it clears the app’s local data and settings, so you may need to sign in again. It is not the same as uninstalling installed games, but do not assume every game installation state will be preserved in every configuration.

Repeat the process for:

  • Microsoft Store
  • Gaming Services, if it has Advanced options
  • Xbox Game Bar, if the error occurs there
  • Xbox Identity Provider or Xbox App Services, if present

Test after each repair or reset. This makes it clear which component changed the result.

Fix 3: Reinstall Gaming Services

If repairing or resetting Xbox does not help, Gaming Services is a common advanced troubleshooting target. That does not prove it is the cause in every case.

Remove the existing package

Close Xbox and Microsoft Store, save your work, and open PowerShell as administrator or an elevated Windows Terminal window. Paste only the command shown:

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers

The narrower Microsoft.GamingServices form should be tried first. Package names can vary; some Microsoft Q&A guidance uses this broader alternative:

Get-AppxPackage *GamingServices* -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers

Do not run both removal commands automatically. If PowerShell reports that no matching package is installed, continue to the Store installation step instead of repeatedly removing packages.

Removing Gaming Services can temporarily stop Xbox or Game Pass games from launching until the service is installed again.

Install Gaming Services from Microsoft Store

In the same elevated PowerShell window, run:

Start-Process "ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN"

This is a Microsoft Store deep link for the Gaming Services listing, not a general-purpose Xbox repair command.

  1. When Microsoft Store opens, select Install or Get.
  2. Wait for installation to finish.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Microsoft Store first, then Xbox.
  5. Sign in and repeat the action that originally produced the error.

Microsoft Q&A guidance for reinstalling Gaming Services

If the Store link does not open

  1. Open Microsoft Store manually and search for Gaming Services.
  2. Run wsreset.exe, restart Windows, and try the link again.
  3. Repair or reset Microsoft Store from its Advanced options.
  4. Test whether Store can install another free app.

If no Store app can install, the issue is probably broader than Xbox. Do not download Gaming Services DLLs or APPX files from third-party websites.

Fix 4: Reinstall the Xbox app

  1. Open Microsoft Store > Library.
  2. Find Xbox.
  3. Select Uninstall, if that option is available.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Return to Microsoft Store and reinstall Xbox.

If uninstall is unavailable, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options > Reset, then reinstall it from Store if necessary. Do not delete the WindowsApps folder or game folders manually.

Microsoft’s Store app reinstall guidance

Fix 5: Check Xbox-related services

This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cure.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter services.msc.
  3. Check whether relevant services exist and are not disabled.
  4. If present, verify that they can start.

Potentially relevant services include:

  • Xbox Live Auth Manager
  • Xbox Live Networking Service
  • Xbox Live Game Save
  • Gaming Services

Do not set every service to Automatic as a blanket fix. Windows may manage startup behavior differently depending on the installation. If a service is missing rather than merely stopped, do not create it manually; a missing service usually points back to an incomplete or damaged Gaming Services installation.

Fix 6: Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC

Use these commands after Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services repairs have failed, or when several Windows apps are malfunctioning.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and test Xbox again. These scans can take time and may appear stuck at a percentage. Do not close the window prematurely.

DISM and SFC repair Windows component and system-file problems; they do not guarantee that Xbox package registration will be restored.

Fix 7: Test another Windows user profile

A second Windows account can show whether the problem is per-user or system-wide.

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
  2. Select Add account.
  3. Create or add a test account.
  4. Sign in to that profile.
  5. Open Microsoft Store and Xbox.
  6. Test the same action.

If Xbox works in the new profile, the original profile, cached credentials, per-user Store registration, or app data is probably involved. If it fails in both profiles, the problem is more likely system-wide, Store-wide, Gaming Services-related, or caused by Windows corruption. This is a useful diagnostic inference, not proof of one specific cause.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Fix 8: Consider a Windows 11 repair install

Reserve an in-place Windows 11 repair installation for broader failures, such as:

  • Microsoft Store will not open or install unrelated apps.
  • Gaming Services cannot be installed after package removal.
  • Multiple built-in apps show registration errors.
  • DISM or SFC reports problems it cannot repair.
  • The error affects multiple Windows user profiles.

Back up important files first, then follow Microsoft’s current Windows 11 installation-media instructions. Confirm the selected installation option carefully before proceeding. A repair install can address broader Windows component problems, but it is more invasive than repairing an app and is not guaranteed to fix every Xbox failure or preserve every application, setting, or game state.

If the error happens during game installation

When 0x80040154 appears only during installation or updating, first determine whether the failure is Xbox-specific:

  1. Try installing another free app from Microsoft Store.
  2. If Store works elsewhere, repair or reset Xbox and reinstall Gaming Services.
  3. Confirm the selected installation drive is available and has sufficient free space.
  4. Check whether the problem affects one game or every game.

A single-game failure may involve that title’s installation state or requirements; it does not establish that 0x80040154 itself means the drive is faulty. Store-wide installation failures point more strongly toward Microsoft Store or Windows servicing.

Choose the shortest path for your symptom

Where the error appears Recommended order
Only when Xbox opens Update Windows and Store, repair Xbox, reset Xbox, reinstall Gaming Services, then reinstall Xbox.
While installing a game Test another Store app, repair Store, check Gaming Services, verify the drive and free space, then test Xbox.
Microsoft Store also fails Run wsreset.exe, repair or reset Store, update Windows, run DISM and SFC, then test another profile.
During sign-in Confirm the intended Store and Xbox account, repair Xbox, check services, reinstall Gaming Services, then test another profile.

What not to do

  • Do not run random registry “fixes” for REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG.
  • Do not download Gaming Services files from unofficial sites.
  • Do not use broad AppX re-registration scripts as an early fix; they can create unrelated errors.
  • Do not delete the WindowsApps folder.
  • Do not permanently disable security software.
  • Do not repeat Gaming Services removal commands without confirming that Store can reinstall it.
  • Do not confuse the current Xbox PC app with the discontinued Xbox Console Companion app.
  • Do not assume renewing Game Pass will repair a Windows registration problem.

When to contact Microsoft or Xbox Support

Seek support if Microsoft Store fails across multiple apps, Gaming Services cannot be reinstalled, the error affects multiple profiles, or the PC is managed by a school or organization that may block Store, PowerShell, or service changes. Also contact support if the problem began after a major Windows update and remains after the supported repair steps above.

After the repair: Xbox app and Game Pass

The Xbox app for PC is the official client for Xbox PC games, social features, and related services. PC Game Pass may suit players who want a rotating PC catalog, while Game Pass Ultimate offers broader benefits depending on current regional terms. Neither a subscription nor reinstalling the client repairs a broken Store registration or Gaming Services installation. If you only play one or two games, buying them individually through an official PC storefront may be a better fit.
