This system is also why looping between two nearby lakes is more efficient than camping a single spot. You’re rotating cooldowns instead of fighting them.
Quest Flags and Progression Locks
Some players are blocked because the Frostwarden research chain hasn’t been started. Until you accept the initial quest, Frostspore Fish spawns at a reduced rate that feels functionally nonexistent.
Check your journal and speak to cold-biome NPCs with research or weather-related dialogue. Once the quest flag is active, the spawn rate normalizes immediately, even without finishing the step.
This is intentional design. Frostspore Fish is tied to progression pacing, not just exploration luck.
When It’s Actually a Bug
If none of the above works, fully close and reload the game. Long sessions can desync weather visuals from actual spawn states, especially after multiple fast travels.
On rare occasions, fishing nodes can permanently bug in a single save session. A full reload clears it every time, with no reported data loss.
As a final safety net, switching to offline mode before reloading has helped some players force correct biome states.
If Frostspore Fish feels overly strict, that’s because it is. Heartopia uses it as a progression pressure point, teaching players to read weather, respect hidden systems, and plan resource loops instead of reacting to RNG. Master that mindset here, and the rest of the game’s late systems click into place much faster.
