Updating the correct graphics driver can improve game compatibility, reduce stutter, fix crashes, and sometimes increase FPS—but it is not a universal performance upgrade. The biggest gains usually come from game-specific fixes, shader improvements, corrected GPU selection, or replacing a generic or damaged driver. If your GPU is already stable and current, another update may change little.
One important qualification: Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Graphics-driver availability now depends increasingly on your GPU generation and its manufacturer. A current driver does not replace missing Windows security updates. See Microsoft’s driver guidance and check whether your PC can move to Windows 11.
What a gaming driver actually does
A graphics driver is the software layer that lets Windows and games communicate with your GPU. It enables hardware acceleration, DirectX and other graphics APIs, display outputs, power management, game profiles, and features such as upscaling or frame generation where supported.
A manufacturer driver is substantially better than Windows’ Microsoft Basic Display Adapter for gaming. Microsoft describes the basic adapter as having limited capabilities, which can result in poor performance and missing features. If Device Manager shows it, install the correct NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or system-manufacturer driver.

Drivers can improve a newly released game when they include a profile or bug fix. They can also improve frame-time consistency without materially increasing average FPS. They cannot normally overcome an underpowered GPU, insufficient VRAM, CPU bottlenecks, overheating, inadequate memory, or settings that are too demanding.
Before you update
- Identify the exact GPU. Right-click Start and open Device Manager > Display adapters. Right-click the GPU, choose Properties > Driver, and record the provider, date, and version.
- Alternatively, press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, press Enter, and check the Display or Render tabs. - Record your current version and download the replacement before removing anything.
- For a laptop or branded prebuilt, check the manufacturer’s support page first. OEM drivers may preserve hybrid graphics, power modes, display switching, hotkeys, and sleep/wake behavior.
Use the exact model—not simply “NVIDIA,” “AMD,” or “Intel”—when selecting a download.
Official Windows 10 driver sources
| GPU or system | Official source | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce | NVIDIA Driver Download | Game Ready Driver for primarily gaming use |
| AMD Radeon | AMD Drivers and Support | AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition |
| Intel Arc or integrated graphics | Intel Download Center | Model- and Windows-version-specific package |
| Laptop or prebuilt GPU | PC manufacturer support page | OEM-validated package when troubleshooting |
Avoid generic “driver updater” utilities. They can offer mismatched, bundled, outdated, or unnecessary packages. Windows Update is useful for compatibility and recovery, but it may not provide the newest game-focused release.
How to update a Windows 10 graphics driver
Windows Update
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open View optional updates, if shown, then expand Driver updates.
- Select the appropriate graphics driver and choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not explicitly request a restart.

NVIDIA
- Open NVIDIA’s official driver page.
- Select the exact GPU, Windows 10 64-bit, and the appropriate branch.
- Choose Game Ready Driver when new-game support is the priority. Choose Studio Driver when creative-app stability matters more.
- Run the installer and choose Custom installation if you need a clean-install option.
- Use clean installation for corruption, repeated crashes, or conflicts—not automatically for every update.
- Restart the PC.
Game Ready and Studio drivers are intended for different testing priorities; neither is guaranteed to deliver higher FPS in every game.
AMD
- Open AMD’s Drivers and Support page.
- Select your Radeon model manually or use AMD’s detection tool.
- Download the Windows 10-compatible Adrenalin package.
- Close games and overlays, then run the installer.
- Use Factory Reset when repairing a damaged installation.
- Restart and recheck Radeon settings, because a clean installation can restore defaults.
AMD also provides the AMD Cleanup Utility. Read release notes before updating and return to the last known-good version if a new package creates problems.
Intel
- Open Intel’s Download Center or Driver & Support Assistant.
- Confirm the exact graphics product and Windows 10 build.
- Download the compatible driver.
- If offered, select Custom Installation > Clean Installation.
- Restart the PC.
Intel’s clean installation removes old drivers and restores Intel graphics settings. Generic Intel drivers can overwrite OEM customizations; if you see flickering, blue screens, detection failures, or TDR errors, reinstall the laptop or prebuilt manufacturer’s driver.
Make sure the game uses the powerful GPU
On laptops and hybrid-graphics systems, a game may run on integrated graphics even when a discrete GPU is installed.

Windows 10’s available graphics options differ from Windows 11, so do not look for Windows 11-only features such as its “Optimizations for windowed games” toggle. Also connect a laptop to AC power, select its performance mode, and check the manufacturer’s hybrid-graphics or MUX controls.
Other Windows 10 settings worth checking
- Close unnecessary startup programs and background applications.
- Use Task Manager to inspect CPU, memory, disk, and GPU usage while playing.
- Use a performance-oriented power plan while connected to AC, but expect more heat, noise, and battery drain.
- Monitor GPU temperature, clock speed, and utilization. A driver does not repair dust, poor airflow, failing fans, or dried thermal paste.
- Disable overlays one at a time when diagnosing hitching.
- Keep the game and launcher updated and maintain sufficient free storage.
How to verify whether the update helped
Do not judge a driver by one unusually good or bad run. Reboot first, then use the same game, scene, resolution, graphics settings, API, frame limit, and overlay configuration before and after the update.
Record average FPS, 1% lows if available, frame-time consistency, GPU and CPU utilization, GPU temperature and clock speed, crashes, hitching, and visual errors. Run the same test at least two or three times and compare the median result. A successful update may reduce stutter or crashes while leaving average FPS nearly unchanged.
When you should update—and when you can wait
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| A new game lists a driver requirement or relevant fix | Update |
| Crashes, corruption, flickering, Code 43, or incorrect GPU detection | Update or clean-reinstall |
| Windows uses Microsoft Basic Display Adapter | Install the proper hardware driver promptly |
| Current driver is stable and the new release has no relevant fix | Waiting is reasonable |
| A laptop has customized graphics behavior | Try the OEM driver first |
| Release notes list an issue affecting your game or GPU | Wait or retain the known-good driver |
| Optional, beta, or hotfix package with no relevant benefit | Prefer stability over being first |
WHQL certification indicates Microsoft’s hardware-quality process; it does not guarantee perfect stability on every game or configuration.

If the new driver causes problems
Performance drops or new stutter
- Restart Windows and allow the game to rebuild shaders.
- Check whether resolution, upscaling, frame limits, or other settings were reset.
- Repeat the controlled test using the same scene.
- Compare with the last known-good driver.
- Roll back if the problem began immediately after updating.
A game update, changed profile, shader rebuild, or driver regression can all explain a lower result.
Code 43
Code 43 means Windows detected that the graphics device reported a problem. Follow Microsoft’s Code 43 guidance: update or roll back through Device Manager, uninstall and reinstall the driver, then try the vendor’s cleanup process. On a laptop, test the OEM package. Also check GPU seating, power connectors, temperatures, and possible hardware failure.
Black screen or failed installation
Try restarting, then use Device Manager to roll back or uninstall the driver if Windows remains usable. If normal display does not return, boot into Safe Mode and install the OEM or previously downloaded official driver. Do not confuse a graphics-driver clean installation with reinstalling Windows; the former does not delete personal files.
Use DDU only for difficult cases
Display Driver Uninstaller is an advanced third-party cleanup tool, not a requirement for routine updates. Consider it when the normal installer repeatedly fails, you changed GPU vendors, remnants cause incorrect detection, or a vendor cleanup tool did not solve the issue.
