Aion crashing on PC does not have one universal fix. The correct solution depends on whether you play Aion Live or Aion Classic, which region and launcher you use, and whether the crash happens before launch, during login, when loading a character, or after several minutes of gameplay.
Before changing anything, identify your client: Steam, PURPLE/NC, or Gameforge. Also note whether you use Windows 10 or 11, NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics, and whether the problem began after a game, Windows, graphics-driver, or antivirus update. The safest first tests are restarting Windows, disabling overlays, repairing the installation, updating or rolling back the graphics driver, and resetting Aion’s graphics configuration.
Scope: This guide covers Aion Live and Aion Classic on Windows. Aion 2 is a separate game and its crash reports should not be used as evidence for these clients.
First, identify what “crashing” means
Different symptoms point to different causes. Do not assume that a crash at startup has the same cause as a crash after an hour of gameplay.

| Symptom | Useful first areas to test |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens after clicking Play | Launcher process, Windows, antivirus, permissions, or a blocked patcher |
| The launcher closes | Launcher files, security software, corrupted updates, or a client-specific service problem |
| Crash before the NC logo or login screen | Game files, runtimes, driver, overlays, or configuration |
| Black screen or “Not Responding” | Fullscreen mode, resolution, graphics settings, driver, or overlay conflict |
| Crash when selecting a character or entering a zone | Asset or shader files, configuration, or a character- or location-specific problem |
| Crash after 10–60 minutes | Heat, memory use, driver timeout, unstable overclock, or background software |
| Crash only after a patch | Changed files, shader cache, driver compatibility, or a new game-side bug |
| Crash only on one account or character | Account-, character-, or location-specific data rather than the entire installation |
| Crash on every account and every client launch | Local files, Windows, drivers, security software, or hardware |
This table is a diagnostic guide, not proof of causation. Test one change at a time so you know which step affected the result.
Before you begin: confirm your Aion installation
- Game: Aion Live or Aion Classic—not Aion 2.
- Launcher: Steam, PURPLE/NC, or Gameforge.
- Region: Your regional client may use different files, requirements, and support channels.
- Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11, including the current build.
- Hardware: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics; laptops may have both integrated and dedicated GPUs.
- Timing: Record whether the crash began after a game, Windows, driver, or antivirus update.
The official NC download page documents PURPLE and lists Aion and Aion Classic as separate products, while Gameforge maintains a separate support system. Do not apply instructions for one launcher to another without checking the relevant client.
12 steps to stop Aion crashing
1. Restart Windows and perform a clean test launch
Restart the PC, not just the launcher. After Windows starts, launch only the required Aion client and launcher. Do not immediately start recording software, hardware-monitoring tools, RGB utilities, or other launchers.
If ordinary launching fails, right-click the official launcher and choose Run as administrator as a temporary test. Administrator access can help with a permissions problem, but it is not required for every installation and should not be treated as a permanent fix by default.

Overlays and monitoring tools can hook into the game’s rendering process. Close or disable these for the test:
- Discord overlay
- Steam overlay
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay
- AMD overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- Recording and streaming software
- RGB and peripheral-control utilities
- Third-party antivirus overlays
- Other game launchers and “game optimizer” utilities
Also disconnect unnecessary controllers, USB hubs, and other peripherals temporarily. If Aion works afterward, re-enable items one at a time to identify the conflict. Steam’s general launch guidance recommends disabling non-essential software when a game will not start.
3. Try windowed or borderless mode
If the crash produces a black screen, freezes during startup, or happens only at a particular resolution, test windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Use a standard desktop resolution and conservative graphics settings first.

Fullscreen mode, a stale resolution, or a display-mode change can prevent the client from rendering correctly even when the game files are intact.
4. Repair the game files
File repair is safer than immediately deleting folders or reinstalling the entire game. Let the process finish, allow any replacement files to download, then restart the launcher and Windows before testing again.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click Aion and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
Older guides may call this Local Files → Verify integrity of game cache. Steam has changed the menu wording; the purpose is the same. Do not launch Aion until Steam has completed every download.
PURPLE or NC launcher
- Open the PURPLE or NC launcher.
- Select the relevant Aion product.
- Look for Repair, File Check, Verify, or an equivalent maintenance option.
- Allow the check and any download to finish completely.
- Restart the launcher and test Aion.
The exact label can vary by region and launcher version, so use the maintenance option belonging to the installed Aion product.
Gameforge
Use the Gameforge launcher’s repair or complete file-check function where available. Avoid deleting the entire installation before trying the launcher repair process. Gameforge uses a separate, region-specific support portal.
5. Update Windows and install a stable graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates, then install a current supported driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Restart Windows afterward.
“Update the driver” is not a guaranteed Aion fix. If the crashes began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver instead:

- Use the driver’s rollback option when available.
- Otherwise install a known stable earlier release.
- Choose a clean installation during setup if the installer offers it.
- Record which driver version you tested.
Do not repeatedly install random driver packages without tracking the results. If Aion crashes with multiple driver versions and other games also fail, investigate hardware stability, temperatures, RAM, power delivery, Windows corruption, and storage rather than assuming the GPU driver is responsible.
6. Check the correct GPU on a laptop
A laptop may launch Aion on integrated graphics or switch adapters incorrectly. For a controlled test:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Connect the charger.
- In Windows Graphics settings or the GPU control panel, assign Aion and its launcher to the dedicated GPU.
- Temporarily use a balanced or high-performance power profile.
- Update both the integrated and dedicated GPU drivers.
- Check that the laptop is not overheating.
This only addresses wrong-adapter or adapter-switching problems. It will not fix corrupted files, unstable hardware, or a game-side issue.
7. Reset Aion’s graphics configuration
A bad resolution, rendering mode, stale setting, or shader-related configuration can cause startup crashes.
- Find the configuration folder or configuration file for the relevant Aion installation.
- Back it up to another location.
- Rename the original folder or file rather than deleting it immediately.
- Launch Aion so it can create a clean configuration.
- Start with low or default graphics, a standard resolution, and windowed or borderless mode.
- Disable post-processing and overlays.
- Re-enable individual settings one at a time.
Some community reports describe fewer crashes after switching from a high-quality graphics engine to the default engine. That is an anecdotal diagnostic test, not a confirmed universal solution.
8. Check legacy runtime requirements
An older game can depend on legacy components even when it is running on a modern graphics card and Windows installation. The Korean official Aion download page lists client-specific dependencies including DirectX 9.0c-era components, DirectX 12 or later, Visual C++ 2013, and .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later. It also lists Windows 10-era hardware requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThose specifications are for that particular regional client and should not be treated as universal current requirements for every Aion Live or Classic installation. 9. Check antivirus, firewall, and permissions
Security software can block a launcher, patcher, anti-cheat component, or newly downloaded game file. Use this reversible sequence:
- Confirm that Aion came from Steam or the official regional launcher.
- Open your security product’s quarantine and detection history.
- Update the security product.
- If necessary, add only the official launcher and game folder to a temporary exclusion.
- Test Aion.
- Restore normal protection and remove the exclusion if it did not help.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection, approve an unexplained executable, or use a “fixer” downloaded from an unofficial site.
10. Treat Compatibility Mode as a targeted experiment
Compatibility Mode is not a default fix. Test it only when the launcher opens but the game fails immediately, the problem began after moving to a newer Windows release, or official support recommends it.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before changing the setting, record its original state. If Compatibility Mode is already enabled, disable it and test again; the compatibility setting itself can cause instability. Undo the change if it produces no improvement.
11. Check temperatures, memory, and hardware stability
If Aion runs for several minutes before crashing, monitor the system while reproducing the problem:
- CPU and GPU temperatures
- System RAM and virtual-memory usage
- GPU-driver reset messages
- CPU or GPU overclocking and undervolting settings
- Storage errors or very low free space
- Power or thermal throttling
Return overclocked or undervolted components to stock settings for testing. If the whole PC reboots, freezes, or shows a hardware-level error rather than merely closing Aion, the problem may be broader than the game client.
12. Reinstall only after the lower-risk tests
A full reinstall is a last resort. It is time-consuming and will not fix a driver regression, overheating, unstable RAM, overlay conflict, or a service-side problem.

If the launcher itself cannot repair or patch the installation, reinstalling the launcher may be more appropriate than immediately removing the complete game. Back up configuration files first. Do not delete Data, L10N, Texture, or configuration folders without identifying the exact client and understanding that settings may be lost and files may need to be redownloaded.
Older Gameforge troubleshooting guidance mentions deleting specific folders for corruption problems, but that advice is not a current universal instruction. Use it only when the applicable support team directs you to do so or after making a complete backup.

Collect crash evidence before contacting support
A useful support ticket is much more actionable than “Aion crashes.” Record:
- Windows version and build
- Aion version, region, and Live or Classic edition
- Launcher used: Steam, PURPLE/NC, or Gameforge
- CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage type
- Graphics-driver version
- Exact crash time and what was happening
- Whether the client freezes, closes, displays an error, or reboots Windows
- Error text or a screenshot
- Event Viewer details
- DxDiag report
- Whether file repair completed successfully
- Whether disabling overlays or testing security exclusions changed anything
How to create a DxDiag report
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - Wait for the diagnostic tool to finish loading.
- Select Save All Information.
- Attach the text file only to the official support ticket.
Review logs before sharing them and remove personal information where appropriate. Do not publish DxDiag or Event Viewer reports publicly if they contain identifying details.

When the problem may be game-side
Check official announcements and service channels before performing destructive troubleshooting when:
- the crashes began immediately after a major patch;
- many players using the same client report the same behavior;
- the problem occurs only in one event, zone, or client build;
- file repair, configuration reset, driver testing, and overlay removal have not changed anything.
Do not assume there is an outage unless the publisher confirms it. A crash affecting one PC is more likely to require local diagnosis; a simultaneous issue affecting many players may require a game-side fix.
Contact the correct support team
Steam users can begin with Steam’s technical-support route and the Aion installation’s publisher support. NC-operated clients should use the official NC Aion support area or its Aion ticket route. Gameforge players should use the Gameforge Aion support portal; its ticket system is separate and requires an account.
Include your client, region, crash timing, hardware, driver version, repair results, screenshots, and DxDiag report. This prevents support from repeating steps that you have already tested.
