Steam ended support for macOS 11 Big Sur on October 15, 2025. Valve says the Steam Client no longer runs on macOS 11 and that future versions require features and security updates available in macOS 12 Monterey or later. If your Mac supports Monterey, upgrade through macOS Software Update. If it does not, use Steam on another supported computer or consider game streaming rather than relying on an unsupported Big Sur installation.
What changed?
This is a Steam Client support cutoff, not a notice that every Mac game or Steam purchase was deleted. Valve says Steam’s core features depend on an embedded version of Google Chrome that no longer works on older macOS versions. Future Steam releases also require operating-system features and security updates available from macOS 12 onward. See Valve’s support notice.
Valve’s wording says the Steam Client will no longer run on macOS 11 after the cutoff. It does not promise a supported legacy client, grandfathered build, or grace period for Big Sur users.
Who is affected?
- macOS 11 Big Sur: below Steam’s supported requirement after October 15, 2025.
- macOS 12 Monterey or later: meets the macOS level Valve identifies for future Steam versions, although individual games may have separate requirements.
- macOS 10.15 Catalina or earlier: already below this newer requirement and may have been affected by earlier Steam compatibility changes.
Apple lists Big Sur’s latest release as 11.7.11 and Monterey’s as 12.7.6 on its macOS version information page.

Check your Mac’s macOS version
- Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Select About This Mac.
- Read the macOS name and version number.
If you are already on Monterey or later but Steam fails, this particular Big Sur cutoff may not be the cause. Check Steam’s current error message, the game’s requirements, and your network or account status.
How to upgrade
On newer macOS versions, use:
- Apple menu → System Settings.
- Open General → Software Update.
- Install the newest compatible macOS update or upgrade offered.
On older interfaces, the path is Apple menu → System Preferences → Software Update. Back up the Mac before installing a major upgrade. Apple says Software Update checks which versions are compatible with your Mac model; if no upgrade appears, the Mac may already be current for its hardware or may not qualify for a newer release. Does your Mac support Monterey?
Do not rely only on the purchase year or processor type. Apple’s full Monterey compatibility list includes many Intel Macs as well as Apple silicon models, but also contains model-specific limits.
Some Macs that support Big Sur do not support Monterey. Apple’s Big Sur compatibility list therefore cannot be used as proof that your Mac can upgrade.

Will you lose your Steam library?
No—the cutoff does not by itself delete your Steam purchases or account ownership. The problem is access to the supported Steam Client and to services that may be required to install, update, authenticate, or launch a game.
Individual games can behave differently. Their macOS executables, launchers, DRM, multiplayer services, updates, and 32-bit or 64-bit requirements are separate from Steam’s client requirement. Steam Cloud saves, achievements, DLC checks, and online play may also depend on the client or related online services. Do not assume that every installed game will continue launching independently without Steam.

If your Mac cannot upgrade
Stay on Big Sur
This avoids disrupting legacy applications, but Steam is unsupported after the cutoff. The client may fail to launch, authenticate, update, or display store and community content, and Valve warns about the security risks of remaining on an unsupported system. Do not treat an old Steam build as a guaranteed long-term solution.
Use another Mac or a Windows PC
A newer supported Mac is the simplest Apple-ecosystem option. A Windows gaming PC is usually the stronger choice if your priority is broad Steam compatibility, because many games target Windows first. In either case, game compatibility remains title-specific.

Stream from another computer
Steam Remote Play or Steam Link can stream a game from a supported gaming computer to another device. This requires a second computer capable of running the game, plus a reliable low-latency network. It is a gameplay workaround, not a way to restore native Steam support on Big Sur.
Cloud services such as GeForce NOW may also work for supported games, subject to regional availability, internet quality, service limits, and ownership requirements.
Virtualization or unofficial patching
Running Windows through virtualization or installing an unsupported macOS release with a community patcher can introduce performance, graphics, driver, security, update, anti-cheat, licensing, and data-loss problems. These are advanced, unsupported options—not dependable first-line fixes for Steam access.
Common misconceptions
- “My purchases disappear.” No. The issue is access to Steam and Steam-dependent services, not automatic deletion of your account or licenses.
- “Every game stops working instantly.” Not necessarily. Game behavior varies, but Valve no longer supports the normal client environment on Big Sur.
- “Reinstalling Steam will fix it.” A reinstall cannot make an unsupported operating system meet Steam’s requirements.
- “Apple silicon is required.” No. Monterey supports many Intel Macs; the key requirement is a compatible macOS version.
- “Every recent Mac supports Monterey.” Check Apple’s exact model list.
What to do now
First, check your macOS version and Mac model. If Apple offers Monterey or a newer officially supported release, back up the Mac and upgrade to the newest compatible version. If the Mac cannot run Monterey, do not depend on Big Sur Steam access for the long term: move Steam to a supported Mac or Windows PC, or use Remote Play or cloud streaming if your setup meets the requirements.
