If Fortnite is installed but will not launch on Windows 11, do not reinstall it immediately. First check Epic’s service status, then verify the game files, clear the Epic Games Launcher cache, update Windows and your graphics driver, and repair Easy Anti-Cheat. These steps resolve the most common causes without deleting your installation or local settings.
Use the symptom guide below to choose the shortest relevant path: a game stuck on “Running” usually points to files, Easy Anti-Cheat, or security software; a black screen points more often to graphics settings, DirectX, or GPU selection; ESP-DIST errors require network and storage checks.
Start by identifying the failure
| What happens | Start here |
|---|---|
| Epic Games Launcher does not open | Check service status, clear the launcher cache, update Windows, and test administrator mode. |
| Epic says Fortnite is “Running,” but no window appears | Verify files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, and check Windows Security. |
| Easy Anti-Cheat displays an error | Repair or reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat. |
| “Couldn’t start the game” appears | Reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat and verify Fortnite. |
| Black screen or freezing before the menu | Update the graphics driver, test Performance Mode, and select the dedicated GPU. |
| The game crashes after connecting a controller | Disconnect the controller and restart Windows. |
| ESP-DIST or ESP-DIST-001 appears | Check Epic’s services, your network, firewall, VPN, free space, and local configuration. |
| Settings reset every launch | Remove the Read-only attribute from GameUserSettings.ini. |
| The game crashes after several minutes | Check drivers, background software, GPU selection, ventilation, and overheating. |
| Updating or installation fails | Check Epic Store status, free storage, launcher cache, and the installation drive. |
1. Check whether Epic is having an outage
Open status.epicgames.com before changing anything on your PC. Check the individual components rather than looking only for a general Fortnite warning:
- Fortnite login and game services
- Matchmaking
- Epic Online Services authentication
- Easy Anti-Cheat
- Epic Games Store downloads and installation
Fortnite can be operational while the Epic Games Store’s download or installation service is degraded. That can explain a failed update or file verification even when the game itself is available. An outage cannot be fixed with a driver update or reinstall; wait for the affected service to recover and try again.

Epic also recommends checking its service-status page when the launcher or game is not working. See Epic’s launcher troubleshooting guidance.
2. Confirm that the PC is suitable
Compare the PC with Epic’s current Fortnite requirements. Epic lists these recommended specifications:
- GPU: Nvidia GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or an equivalent DirectX 11 GPU
- Video memory: 2 GB VRAM
- CPU: Intel Core i5-7300U at 3.5 GHz, AMD Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent
- Memory: 16 GB RAM or more
- Storage: NVMe SSD
- Operating system: 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11
The minimum list includes an Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 GPU, Intel Core i3-3225 processor, 8 GB RAM, and 64-bit Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2. Because Epic’s current minimum table names Windows 10 editions while its recommended section names Windows 10/11, do not treat that table as formal certification of every Windows 11 configuration. Use a fully updated 64-bit Windows 11 installation and meet or exceed the listed hardware where possible.
Meeting minimum requirements means the game may run; it does not promise high settings or stable performance. On lower-spec PCs, use lower graphics settings and close background applications.

3. Perform the low-risk restart sequence
- Close Fortnite.
- In the Windows notification area, right-click the Epic Games icon and select Exit. Closing the launcher window alone may leave it running.
- Restart Windows 11.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, especially controllers and USB hubs.
- Open Epic Games Launcher and test Fortnite before reopening overlays, recording tools, VPNs, or tuning utilities.
Epic documents a controller-related crash scenario. If Fortnite fails only when a controller is attached, disconnect it, restart the computer, and launch the game again. If that works, later check Windows, USB, controller, and firmware updates.
4. Verify Fortnite’s files
Verification is the best first repair for a game that shows “Running,” closes immediately, or fails after an interrupted update. It checks for damaged or different local files and repairs them. Epic says verification does not affect saved data.
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find Fortnite and click its three-dot menu.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart the launcher and test the game.
Verification can take a long time and may need free space to replace files. If it repeatedly finds damage, the problem may be permissions, security software, interrupted updates, or a failing drive. A successful verification does not prove that Easy Anti-Cheat, the driver, Windows Security, or the launcher cache is healthy.

5. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Clear the cache if the launcher is blank, crashes, shows stale information, refuses to update, or launches Fortnite incorrectly. Do not delete the entire launcher folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Click the up-arrow in the Windows notification area.
- Right-click the Epic Games icon and select Exit.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete these folders if they exist:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Reopen Epic Games Launcher and try Fortnite.
These are launcher cache folders; deleting them does not uninstall Fortnite. The procedure is documented by Epic Games Support.
6. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending updates through Settings → Windows Update, including security patches. Then obtain the graphics driver from the manufacturer rather than using a paid driver-updater utility:
Outdated or damaged drivers are a common source of graphics crashes, black screens, and freezes, but they are not the explanation for every launch failure. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, a clean driver reinstall or a rollback may be appropriate through the manufacturer’s supported process.
7. Repair Easy Anti-Cheat
Fortnite may refuse to launch even when its main files are intact if Easy Anti-Cheat is missing or damaged. For an installation-related EAC error:
The Tool Desk

- Open Fortnite’s three-dot menu and select Manage → Open Install Location.
- Go to
FortniteGameBinariesWin64EasyAntiCheat. - Locate the Easy Anti-Cheat executable. Create a shortcut if necessary.
- Right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and add
repairto the end of the Target field, separated by a space. - Apply the change, run the shortcut, and allow it to make changes.
- Launch Fortnite.
Epic documents this procedure for the “Easy Anti-Cheat is not installed” error. For the “Couldn’t start the game” EAC error, follow Epic’s reinstall instructions. EAC-specific logs and compatibility questions can be taken to the official Easy Anti-Cheat support portal.
Do not permanently disable anti-cheat, replace its files with third-party downloads, or use bypass tools. Those can create security and account risks.

8. Test administrator permissions
Close the launcher completely, right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut, select Run as administrator, and test Fortnite. Epic says this can help with permission-related launcher and download problems.
Treat administrator mode as a diagnostic, not an automatic permanent setting. If it works, investigate folder permissions, installation ownership, and security software instead of routinely running the launcher with elevated privileges.
9. Check Windows Security and antivirus
If Epic reports that Fortnite is running but no window appears, Epic recommends adding the Fortnite installation folder to Windows Security’s exclusions:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
- Find Exclusions and select Add or remove exclusions.
- Add only the official Fortnite installation folder.
Do not disable all antivirus protection or exclude an entire drive. Remove the exclusion if it changes nothing. If you use third-party security software, follow its official instructions. Also confirm that the firewall permits Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite to communicate; security software can block connections as well as launch processes. See Epic’s “game running but not opening” guidance.
10. Fix ESP-DIST and ESP-DIST-001 errors
Epic describes ESP-DIST errors as usually connection-related. Work through these tests in order:
- Check the relevant Epic service on the status page.
- Restart the PC, modem, and router.
- Temporarily disable VPN and proxy software.
- Test a different connection, such as a mobile hotspot.
- Use wired Ethernet for large downloads where practical.
- Check firewall permissions for Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite.
- Follow Epic’s official DNS-flush guidance rather than using random registry changes or port-forwarding instructions.
- Keep at least 10 GB free on the Fortnite installation drive.
If Fortnite works on a hotspot but not your normal connection, the installation is less likely to be the cause. Focus on the router, DNS, firewall, VPN, proxy, or internet provider.
Epic also suggests trying the same drive for Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher. This is a conditional workaround, not a universal requirement. External or intermittently connected drives, file-system errors, and failing storage can also produce recurring errors.

11. Fix black screens, DirectX, and GPU selection
For a black screen or freeze before the main menu, update the driver first. Then open Fortnite’s graphics settings if you can reach them and try a Low quality preset with 3D Resolution at 100%.
If DirectX 12 appears to be involved, Epic documents this launch argument as a Performance Mode test:
-d3d12 -es31
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Settings.
- Expand Fortnite.
- Enable Additional Command Line Arguments.
- Enter the argument exactly as shown.
- Launch Fortnite.
This may help, but it is not guaranteed for every GPU or driver. Remove the argument later if it does not help.

In Nvidia Control Panel, use Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings, select Fortnite, and choose the high-performance GPU. On AMD systems, use Radeon Settings → Switchable Graphics or Graphics Settings and set Fortnite to High Performance. Windows 11 may also provide the choice under Settings → System → Display → Graphics; labels vary by driver and laptop manufacturer.
For Nvidia fullscreen crashes, Epic recommends NVIDIA Control Panel → Adjust desktop size and position, selecting the display, setting scaling mode to Full-screen, and setting scaling to be performed by the GPU.
Temporarily test without Discord, GeForce Experience or AMD recording, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, and capture tools. Disable one category at a time and re-enable software after testing so you can identify a conflict.

A computer that fails immediately has a different problem from one that crashes after 20 minutes. For delayed crashes, check that vents are unobstructed, clean dust from fans and airflow areas, and use the PC in a well-ventilated location. Epic includes overheating checks in its graphics troubleshooting guidance.

13. Fix settings that reset every launch
If Fortnite opens but forgets graphics or control settings, check whether its configuration file is read-only:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%. - Open
FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. - Right-click
GameUserSettings.iniand select Properties. - Clear Read-only, then select Apply.
This targets a configuration-permission problem; it is not a general launch fix.
14. Reset Fortnite’s local configuration
For persistent ESP errors or suspected corrupted local configuration, Epic recommends deleting:
%localappdata%FortniteGame
- Close Fortnite and exit Epic Games Launcher from the notification area.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Delete the
FortniteGamefolder. - Restart Windows.
- Open Epic Games Launcher as administrator.
- Go to Library, open Fortnite’s three-dot menu, and select Manage → Verify.
- Test the game.
This is not the same as deleting the installed game, but it removes local configuration and cached data. You may need to recreate local settings, so use it after verification, cache, anti-cheat, security, and driver checks.
15. Reinstall only after the targeted repairs fail
Reinstall Fortnite when verification repeatedly fails, the installation location or permissions are broken, EAC cannot be repaired, the launcher cannot manage updates, or the game is on a problematic drive. Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher when the launcher itself remains corrupted after cache clearing and administrator testing.
Reinstalling the visible game files may leave the launcher cache, local FortniteGame data, anti-cheat service, graphics driver, antivirus block, or Windows problem untouched. That is why Epic places reinstallation after verification, cache clearing, driver updates, security checks, and other diagnostics in its overall troubleshooting sequence.
For ESP-related problems, consider installing Fortnite on the same drive as Epic Games Launcher, as Epic suggests. Do not manually move or delete installation folders before using Epic’s Manage or uninstall controls.

When to contact support
If Fortnite still will not start, collect these details before contacting Epic, Easy Anti-Cheat, or the hardware manufacturer:
- Exact error text or code
- Windows 11 version
- CPU, GPU, RAM, and graphics-driver version
- Whether the game is on an internal, external, SSD, or HDD drive
- Whether verification found damaged files
- Whether EAC repair succeeded
- Whether the game works on another network
- Whether disconnecting a controller changes the result
- Launcher or game logs if support requests them
Epic’s troubleshooting sequence ultimately directs unresolved cases toward the hardware manufacturer when the remaining evidence points to the PC, storage, driver, or Windows installation rather than Epic’s services.
