Yes, but not universally. NVIDIA acknowledged a performance problem involving Game Filters and Photo Mode, which are part of the NVIDIA App’s broader in-game overlay system. That is narrower than saying the entire NVIDIA App—or even its basic FPS counter—reduces performance on every Windows 11 PC.
The fastest test is to open NVIDIA App > Settings > Features, disable Game Filters and Photo Mode, relaunch the game, and repeat the same benchmark or gameplay sequence. If the problem remains, disable In-Game Overlay, then test recording features, HDR, frame generation, drivers, Windows updates, and other overlays separately.
The short verdict
The NVIDIA App can cause lower FPS, worse 1% lows, stutter, crashes, black screens, or incorrect statistics in particular configurations. However, the evidence does not support a universal performance penalty simply from installing the app or enabling every part of its overlay.
NVIDIA specifically acknowledged a problem associated with Game Filters and advised disabling Game Filters and Photo Mode before relaunching affected games. NVIDIA’s subsequent release notes also state that Game Filter defaults were changed to off. This points to the filter/photo-mode subsystem as the main documented issue in that incident, rather than proving that the basic overlay is inherently harmful.

Community testing reported losses ranging from small differences to claims of games running up to 15% slower, but those results were not standardized, independently replicated measurements. Treat them as evidence that some systems can be affected—not as a guaranteed FPS loss. See NVIDIA’s acknowledgment on Game Filters, the related community testing, and NVIDIA’s release highlights.
Disable the suspected features first
- Open NVIDIA App.
- Select Settings.
- Open Features.
- Turn off Game Filters and Photo Mode, if the separate option is shown.
- Turn off In-Game Overlay if Game Filters are unavailable or the problem continues.
- Close the NVIDIA App and relaunch the game.
- Repeat the same test using identical settings.
Disabling the overlay does not disable your NVIDIA graphics driver. It removes in-game functions such as overlay shortcuts, statistics, filters, recording controls, and related features. NVIDIA documents the settings location and shortcuts in its overlay support guide.
Default shortcuts: Alt+Z opens the full overlay, Alt+R toggles performance statistics, and Alt+Shift+R cycles statistics views. Statistics can be configured through Alt+Z > Statistics > Configure heads up display.
“The overlay” is several different systems
When players say the NVIDIA App overlay is causing performance problems, they may be referring to different components:

- Game Filters and Photo Mode: image-processing and screenshot features that can interact with a game even when no obvious filter is visible.
- Statistics: FPS, frame-time, GPU, CPU, and system information displayed over the game.
- ShadowPlay, Instant Replay, Highlights, and background recording: capture functions that continuously monitor or record gameplay.
- RTX HDR: an image-processing feature that can have its own performance cost.
- NVIDIA Smooth Motion and DLSS overrides: driver-level features exposed through the app that should be tested independently from the overlay.
As a result, “overlay enabled” and “Game Filters enabled” are not interchangeable test conditions. NVIDIA’s documented issue named Game Filters specifically. A game that behaves normally with filters off but poorly with the general overlay enabled has a different likely cause.
Symptoms that can be related
Possible symptoms include:
- Lower average FPS.
- Worse 1% lows or visibly uneven frame pacing.
- Microstutter, hitching, or increased frame-time variance.
- Crashes when opening or closing Alt+Z.
- Black screens or rendering failures.
- Missing, incorrect, or fluctuating overlay statistics.
- Recording or Instant Replay conflicts.
- Problems that appear only with DLSS Frame Generation, RTX HDR, Smooth Motion, or filters enabled.
- A bug limited to one game or one driver branch.
These symptoms do not represent one single bug. For example, a crash in one title when the overlay is opened may be a game-specific driver compatibility problem, while a broad performance change across several games may point toward filters, capture, or another system-level conflict.
Use a controlled A/B test
Do not rely only on how a game “feels” after changing a setting. Use the built-in benchmark when available, or repeat the same save, route, camera movement, and combat sequence. Run each configuration at least three times.

Keep the following identical for every run:
- Resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset, and ray-tracing settings.
- DLSS mode, Frame Generation, Smooth Motion, RTX HDR, V-Sync, and frame cap.
- Power mode and, on laptops, AC power and graphics mode.
- Game version, driver version, and test location.
- Background downloads, Windows Update activity, recording, and other overlays.
Record average FPS, 1% lows, and frame-time graphs—not just the highest FPS number. NVIDIA’s free FrameView is designed for this kind of comparison, and its documentation explains percentile performance measurement. Frame-generation technologies also complicate comparisons: displayed FPS can be higher than the number of frames rendered natively by the GPU. Statistics reporting can therefore differ between the game and an overlay.

- A is worse, B is normal: Game Filters and Photo Mode are the likely trigger. Leave them disabled.
- A and B are worse, C is normal: the general In-Game Overlay is implicated.
- A through D are worse, E is normal: the installed app or one of its background services may be involved.
- All runs are similar: the NVIDIA App is probably not the primary cause.
- Only one game is affected: check that game’s known issues and the driver’s game-specific notes.
- Only Frame Generation or HDR is affected: test those features without changing the overlay.
If disabling the overlay does not help
Test recording features
Turn off Instant Replay, Highlights, background recording, and other capture functions. Recording can add another capture and encoding workload even when the statistics counter itself is harmless.
Test RTX HDR, Smooth Motion, and frame generation separately
RTX HDR can reduce performance independently of the overlay. Some overlay-related game bugs have also appeared only when DLSS Frame Generation was enabled. Disable one feature at a time rather than changing all image-quality settings together.
Check other overlays
Steam, Xbox Game Bar, Discord, RTSS, OBS, browser hardware acceleration, and hardware-monitoring utilities can all add overlay or capture components. Temporarily close them during testing. Adding another monitoring tool is not automatically an improvement; it can make the source of a frame-time problem harder to identify.
Check game and driver-specific issues
NVIDIA driver listings have included title-specific overlay problems, including cases involving Cyberpunk 2077 notebooks, the NVIDIA App overlay, and DLSS Frame Generation. Search the known-issues list for the exact game, GPU, and driver branch rather than assuming Windows 11 is responsible. Relevant listings are available through NVIDIA’s driver issue information.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A game patch, shader compilation, or a new driver can also make the first run slower. After a driver change, allow shaders to compile and compare later runs. On laptops, hybrid graphics, Advanced Optimus, power modes, and display routing can make two apparently identical tests behave differently.
Consider Windows 11 independently
Windows 11 can contribute because its display stack, HDR, hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, windowed or borderless presentation, and Multi-Plane Overlay composition can affect diagnosis. But that does not make every NVIDIA App issue a Windows 11 issue.

NVIDIA separately warned that some systems using R580-series drivers or newer could experience lower performance after the Windows 11 October 2025 update KB5066835. That is a distinct Windows/driver incident, not proof that the NVIDIA App overlay caused the slowdown. Check NVIDIA’s current driver notes and Microsoft’s documentation before considering any Windows update rollback. Do not disable Multi-Plane Overlay as a universal fix; it is a display-composition feature and should be changed only as a targeted troubleshooting step.
Update, roll back, or uninstall?
Record your NVIDIA App version, display-driver version, Windows edition and build, GPU model, game version, and enabled features before making major changes. NVIDIA’s current release notes continue to list fixes involving overlay statistics, shortcuts, display changes, filters, performance reporting, resolution changes, and stability. That means behavior can be version-specific; an old report may not describe the current release.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this decision path:
- Filters off fixes the issue: keep the NVIDIA App and leave Game Filters and Photo Mode disabled.
- Only the overlay off fixes it: keep the app if useful, but leave In-Game Overlay disabled.
- Only one game is affected: check the game’s patches and NVIDIA’s driver notes before removing the app.
- Only uninstalling fixes it: remove the app if you do not need its features, or reinstall it after documenting the working driver.
- Nothing changes: investigate drivers, Windows, other overlays, shader compilation, thermals, power limits, and hardware stability.
The NVIDIA App is not required to own an NVIDIA GPU or use the basic graphics driver. Uninstalling it does remove convenience features such as integrated driver discovery, game and program settings management, recording tools, and NVIDIA App-specific controls. Therefore, uninstalling should be a final isolation test, not the first response.
If you perform a clean driver installation, expect driver components, profiles, and customized settings to be reset. A clean installation is not guaranteed to fix an overlay-related performance problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common edge cases
- Alt+Z does nothing: confirm the overlay is enabled under Settings > Features, check for shortcut conflicts, and restart the game. On Windows 11 N, NVIDIA says the Microsoft Media Feature Pack may be required.
- The overlay shows the wrong FPS: compare native-rendered FPS with generated or interpolated frames. NVIDIA release notes have included fixes for incorrect reporting when Smooth Motion is enabled.
- The issue occurs only in borderless mode: test exclusive fullscreen if the game supports it, while keeping every other setting constant.
- The issue started after a Windows update: test the driver and Windows change as separate variables; do not label it an NVIDIA App bug without an A/B comparison.
- The app will not retain settings: update the app, restart Windows, and repeat the test. If settings repeatedly re-enable themselves and the app is unnecessary, uninstalling becomes reasonable.
Who should keep or disable the NVIDIA App?
Keep it if disabling Game Filters resolves the issue, if you use recording, RTX HDR, DLSS overrides, or driver-management features, or if controlled testing shows no measurable difference.
Disable the overlay if you do not use its recording, statistics, filters, or shortcuts—or if a particular game crashes, freezes, or black-screens when the overlay opens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUninstall the app only when testing shows that the installed app itself is involved, or when you do not need its features. There is no reason to buy a new GPU solely because of this problem. The free NVIDIA App and FrameView are sufficient for the initial fix and measurement process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing the NVIDIA App lower FPS?
Not on every system. A documented Game Filters issue and varying community tests show that some configurations can be affected, but installation alone is not proof of a universal performance loss.
Does disabling the overlay disable the NVIDIA driver?
No. It disables in-game overlay functions while leaving the graphics driver installed and operational.
Can RTX HDR remain enabled with the overlay disabled?
Usually these are separate controls, but RTX HDR should be tested independently because it can affect performance without the overlay being active.
Why does the NVIDIA FPS counter differ from the game’s counter?
Frame generation and Smooth Motion can create displayed frames that are not natively rendered. Different counters may measure different stages of the pipeline.
Does this affect Windows 10, AMD, or Intel GPUs?
This diagnosis concerns the NVIDIA App on supported Windows 11 systems and NVIDIA GPUs. It does not establish the same issue for AMD or Intel hardware, and the supplied evidence is not a Windows 10-wide conclusion.
Why does the problem happen in only one game?
Overlay injection, frame generation, HDR, a game patch, or a driver compatibility issue may affect one title differently. Check that game’s known issues and NVIDIA’s driver notes.
Can Steam or Discord overlays cause the same symptom?
Yes. Multiple overlay, capture, and monitoring layers can cause conflicts or add frame-time variability. Disable them during controlled testing.
