Steam lets you send digital gift cards online, but it does not currently let you type in an arbitrary amount. Steam’s U.S. digital-gift-card selector offers fixed denominations of $5, $10, $25, $50, and $100. Local versions may show equivalent amounts in another currency.
To send one, choose a denomination on Steam’s official gift-card page, select the recipient, pay with an eligible payment method, and have the recipient accept the gift. If you need an amount such as $15 or $30, you will need to choose the closest denomination or use another legitimate gifting option.

Can you send a Steam gift card for any amount?
Not through Steam’s standard digital gift-card checkout. The current U.S. selector lists:
- $5
- $10
- $25
- $50
- $100
You cannot enter a custom value such as $15, $30, $40, or $75 into Steam’s native digital-gift-card page. The amounts displayed may differ by country because Steam presents local-currency values, so do not assume the U.S. denominations apply identically worldwide.

How to send a digital Steam gift card
- Open Steam’s official Steam Gift Cards page.
- Choose Send a Digital Steam Gift Card.
- Select one of the denominations shown for your region.
- Choose the friend or family member presented by Steam as the recipient.
- Review the recipient, amount, currency conversion if applicable, and payment details.
- Complete the purchase.
- Ask the recipient to open Steam and accept the gift.
The credit is not an ordinary transfer from your Wallet. After the recipient accepts the gift, Steam adds the value to the recipient’s Steam Wallet. They can then spend it on eligible Steam purchases, including games and microtransactions.
Steam’s gift-card page is the safest place to start because recipient eligibility, country restrictions, and the amount the recipient will receive are handled by the live checkout rather than guessed in advance.
How to send a Steam gift card by email
Steam’s newer gifting flow also supports sending a digital gift card to an email address, with guest checkout available for this type of purchase. The exact controls can vary by region, account, device, or checkout presentation, so use the option only if it appears in your current Steam flow.

What the recipient must do
The recipient must accept the digital gift card before the value enters their Steam Wallet. It is therefore not accurate to say that the money arrives immediately when the sender pays.
Once accepted, the credit becomes Steam Wallet funds rather than cash. It can be used for games and microtransactions. Steam also says Community Market purchases may be possible for accounts that are not limited, but access is subject to the account’s eligibility.
What happens when the recipient is in another country?
Steam says digital gift cards are automatically converted into the recipient’s currency when the sender and recipient use different currencies. The recipient does not necessarily receive the same numerical dollar amount in their Wallet.

Currency conversion does not guarantee that every international gift will work. Steam warns that some countries may restrict sending or receiving gift cards. The relevant restriction should appear during recipient selection or checkout.
Email gifts have an additional rule: Steam’s July 2026 announcement says the recipient must be in the same country as the purchaser. Do not rely on a cross-border email gift unless Steam allows it in the live checkout.

What if you need an exact amount?
Because Steam does not provide a custom-amount field, choose the option that best matches your situation:
| Option | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Digital gift card | Letting the recipient choose what to buy | Fixed denominations |
| Direct game gift | You know the exact title they want | Less flexible than Wallet credit |
| Physical Steam gift card | A cash purchase or physical presentation | Retailer and regional denominations vary |
| Email gift | A recipient who is not already a Steam friend | Same-country and 30-day rules may apply |
Choose the closest digital denomination
This is the simplest solution for an amount that does not match Steam’s selector. For example, if you wanted to send $30, you could choose the closest available denomination that fits your budget. Do not assume that Steam’s checkout supports combining several digital cards into one custom total unless the current interface explicitly offers that option.

Gift the game directly
If you know exactly what the recipient wants, buying the game as a Steam gift can be better than sending Wallet credit. It avoids estimating the required balance, but it gives the recipient a specific title rather than flexible credit. Steam also says gifting can be initiated from a shared wishlist through its newer gifting flow.
Buy a physical Steam gift card
Steam says physical cards are available through retail stores in a variety of denominations. Availability depends on the retailer and region, and physical denominations are not necessarily identical to Steam’s digital options. Start with the physical-card information on Steam’s official gift-card page.
Use an official Steam Wallet code
A legitimate Wallet code purchased from an authorized retailer can be redeemed by the recipient on Steam’s Wallet-code redemption page. This is still not a guaranteed custom-amount method: the available denominations depend on the retailer and country.

Avoid unofficial code sellers and services claiming to transfer Steam Wallet balances. Sending money through a separate payment app is not the same as adding Steam Wallet credit and introduces separate fraud, privacy, chargeback, and account risks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the recipient declines the gift?
Steam says a declined digital gift card is refunded, preferably to the original payment method. If that payment method cannot receive the refund, Steam sends the value to the sender’s Steam Wallet instead.
For an email gift, Steam separately says that failing to accept it within 30 days triggers an automatic refund. Declining and allowing an email gift to expire are different outcomes, so check the applicable Steam notice for the transaction.
Troubleshooting Steam gift-card problems
The recipient cannot see the gift
- Confirm that the recipient is checking the correct email account or Steam notifications.
- Confirm that they have signed in to the intended Steam account.
- For an email gift, check whether the 30-day acceptance period has passed.
- Check the sender’s original payment method and Steam Wallet if the gift was declined or expired.
- Contact Steam Support if the transaction is missing or the refund does not appear after the applicable processing period.
Checkout refuses the purchase
Read the exact on-screen error before trying again. Common causes include attempting to pay with existing Steam Wallet funds, a recipient-country restriction, a payment-method problem, or a mismatch between the intended recipient and the selected email or account.
Do not repeatedly retry a blocked transaction or switch to an unofficial code seller without understanding the restriction. Steam’s live checkout is the authority on whether that particular gift can be sent.

A Market restriction warning appears
Steam says that, in rare cases, accepting a digital gift card can result in a Community Market restriction. A clear warning appears before acceptance if Steam determines that this will happen. If no warning appears, Steam says accepting the gift will not create that restriction.
Read the warning before accepting. This does not mean that every gift card locks the Community Market, and it also does not mean that every recipient automatically has Market access.
Digital gift card or game gift?
Use a digital gift card when you want the recipient to decide among games, DLC, microtransactions, or other eligible Steam purchases. Use a direct game gift when you know the exact title and want to give something specific.
A gift card provides flexible Steam Wallet credit but is limited to Steam’s available denominations and requires acceptance. A game gift avoids the custom-amount problem but cannot be redirected to another purchase if the recipient changes their mind.

Steam currently supports online digital gift cards, not arbitrary custom amounts. In the U.S. interface, the available digital denominations are $5, $10, $25, $50, and $100. Use Steam’s official gifting page, verify the recipient and any country restriction, and remember that the recipient must accept the gift before the credit reaches their Wallet. For an exact amount, use the closest denomination, an official physical card or Wallet code where available, or gift the specific game instead.
