The Radeon RX 7600 is usually the faster card for ordinary 1080p rasterized gaming, while the GeForce RTX 3060 12GB is the better choice for ray tracing, CUDA-dependent software, and games or applications that benefit from extra VRAM. In 2026, the decision is less about launch generation and more about the actual deal: a new RX 7600 with warranty is generally preferable at a similar price, but a substantially cheaper, tested RTX 3060 12GB can be the smarter buy.

Do not confuse the RTX 3060 12GB with the separate RTX 3060 8GB. The 12GB model has a 192-bit memory interface; the 8GB version uses a narrower 128-bit interface and is not the correct comparison for this article.

Quick answer

Choose this GPU If you…
Radeon RX 7600 Want a new 1080p gaming card, mostly play rasterized games, prioritize AV1 encoding, or find it at the same price as an RTX 3060 12GB.
GeForce RTX 3060 12GB Care about ray tracing, use CUDA or NVIDIA-optimized applications, run texture mods, or find a well-tested used card substantially below RX 7600 pricing.

The performance split is consistent even when the exact margins vary: the RX 7600 has a modest raster advantage, whereas the RTX 3060 12GB has a clearer ray-tracing advantage. Published results differ because benchmark games, drivers, APIs, settings, and CPU limits differ. Tom’s Hardware found the RX 7600 about 5% ahead at 1080p medium and tied at 1080p ultra in one overall suite; another comparison measured roughly a 17% raster lead for AMD and up to about a 22% ray-tracing advantage for NVIDIA. These figures are useful context, not universal guarantees. Tom’s Hardware testing Tom’s Hardware model clarification

1080p raster gaming: RX 7600 wins narrowly

Traditional rasterization is the RX 7600’s strongest case. In games without ray tracing, it often leads the RTX 3060 12GB, particularly in newer DX12 workloads. The advantage may be a few percentage points, a more noticeable lead in some games, or no lead at all in others.

Both cards are appropriate for 1080p gaming. Lighter competitive titles can run at high refresh rates, while demanding games may require a mixture of high and medium settings. Factory overclocks, drivers, Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory, the game engine, and the processor in the test system can all change the result.

1440p: playable, but neither is an ultra-settings guarantee

Both GPUs can handle 1440p with sensible settings and upscaling where necessary. The RX 7600’s raster advantage can help when a game fits comfortably within 8GB, but its memory capacity becomes a more important constraint at higher resolutions and quality presets.

The RTX 3060’s 12GB does not make it faster automatically. It does provide more room for high-resolution textures, demanding asset streaming, mods, and future games that approach the RX 7600’s 8GB limit. For a long-term 1440p build, however, neither card is an ideal high-end choice; a stronger GPU with at least 12GB is a better target if the budget allows.

4K gaming

Neither card should be bought as a 4K ultra-settings GPU. Reduced settings, aggressive upscaling, and game-specific compromises are required, and the limited performance class makes 4K a poor primary target.

Ray tracing: RTX 3060 12GB is the better option

Both cards support hardware ray tracing, but the RTX 3060 12GB is generally faster and more usable when RT effects are enabled. Tom’s Hardware found the RTX 3060 clearly ahead in its DXR suite, while the RX 7600 fell below 30 fps at 1080p ultra in three of six demanding ray-traced tests. See the published DXR results.

Neither card is a maximum-ray-tracing solution for demanding games. Plan to reduce RT quality and use an upscaler. NVIDIA’s DLSS can be advantageous in supported games, but its availability and image quality depend on the title, implementation, mode, and resolution. AMD’s FSR is available across more hardware and uses an open, cross-vendor approach; it is not appropriate to declare one technology universally superior without specifying the game and settings.

Is 12GB of VRAM better than 8GB?

For capacity, yes: 12GB gives the RTX 3060 more memory headroom than the RX 7600’s 8GB. That can help with high-resolution textures, modded games, texture packs, asset-heavy applications, and some rendering or AI workloads.

  • 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
  • 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.
  • OC Mode : 1500 MHz (Boost Clock)/Default Mode : 1470 MHz (Boost Clock)

However, 12GB is not a guarantee of higher frame rates. When a game fits within 8GB, the RX 7600 can still be faster because of its stronger raster performance. The practical impact depends on resolution, texture quality, ray tracing, the game engine, driver behavior, and how close the workload comes to exhausting available memory. Eight gigabytes remains generally usable for 1080p, but it is a limitation worth considering if you plan to keep the card for years or use demanding texture packs.

Features, streaming, and software

DLSS, FSR, and gaming features

The RTX 3060 supports DLSS, Reflex, Broadcast, NVIDIA Studio drivers, ray tracing, Resizable BAR, and the broader NVIDIA software ecosystem. The RX 7600 supports FSR and AMD’s Adrenalin features, including Radeon Anti-Lag features. Upscaling and frame generation can improve an experience, but they cannot remove a GPU’s underlying VRAM or ray-tracing limits. Frame generation also should not be treated as equivalent to native rendering performance or as a substitute for an adequate base frame rate.

Feature support changes by game and software version, so check the specific titles you play rather than choosing solely from a feature logo.

Streaming and video encoding

The RX 7600 has hardware AV1 encoding, which is a meaningful advantage for users whose streaming or recording platform supports AV1 and whose viewers’ devices can decode it. The benefit depends on platform support, bitrate limits, application settings, and playback compatibility.

  • Digital maximum resolution: 7680 x 4320

NVIDIA’s NVENC ecosystem is highly established and may be the safer choice when your streaming, editing, or production workflow already relies on NVIDIA-specific support. Neither encoder is universally better for every application, codec, bitrate, and quality target.

Creator and AI workloads

The RTX 3060 12GB is the safer choice for CUDA-dependent applications, NVIDIA-specific plugins and renderers, some AI tools, and software optimized around NVIDIA GPUs. Its 12GB capacity can also be useful for models or scenes that exceed 8GB.

The RX 7600 can work well for supported general GPU-compute, open-standard, and AV1 video workflows, but application compatibility must be checked individually. This is especially important for Blender render engines, Stable Diffusion variants, Adobe applications, DaVinci Resolve, local AI tools, and virtualization. Neither card is a universally powerful professional GPU.

New RX 7600 versus used RTX 3060 12GB

This is the most relevant 2026 buying decision. The RTX 3060 12GB launched at $329 in 2021, but that historical MSRP says little about its present value. It is now an older Ampere product commonly encountered as used hardware, old stock, or marketplace inventory. The RX 7600 is more naturally a new retail purchase.

Price situation Best interpretation
Same price Choose RX 7600 for raster gaming and warranty; choose RTX 3060 for RT, CUDA, or 12GB needs.
RTX 3060 meaningfully cheaper used It can be the better value, particularly for 1080p, RT, or VRAM-sensitive workloads.
RTX 3060 only slightly cheaper than a new RX 7600 Prefer the RX 7600’s newer retail status, warranty, raster performance, and AV1 support.
RX 7600 substantially more expensive A tested RTX 3060 12GB may be the better deal, provided condition and return protection are acceptable.

Used RTX 3060 12GB checklist

  1. Confirm it is the 12GB model, not the RTX 3060 8GB. Check the exact model and memory capacity in GPU-Z or the driver panel.
  2. Run a repeatable 3D load and look for artifacts, crashes, abnormal temperatures, and excessive fan noise.
  3. Inspect the cooler and PCB for corrosion, missing screws, heavy dust, or repair evidence.
  4. Ask about mining use, while remembering that mining history alone does not prove a card is defective.
  5. Prefer a seller offering a return period or remaining warranty.
  6. Confirm the card has the required 8-pin connector and fits your case.

Power, case, and driver compatibility

NVIDIA lists 170W graphics-card power and a 550W recommended system PSU for the RTX 3060 12GB. AMD lists 165W typical board power and a 550W minimum PSU recommendation for the RX 7600. Actual add-in-board specifications vary, so compare the exact model rather than relying only on the GPU name. Check PSU quality, card length and thickness, slot usage, connector placement, airflow, and display outputs.

Both products have Linux support at the product level, but real-world behavior depends on the current driver, Wayland or X11, Vulkan, CUDA or ROCm requirements, hardware encoding support, and whether a game runs through Proton or natively. Windows benchmark results should not be generalized to every Linux application.

Which one should you buy?

Your priority Recommendation
New 1080p gaming build RX 7600 at a competitive price.
Mostly rasterized esports and conventional games RX 7600.
Ray tracing matters RTX 3060 12GB.
CUDA, AI, or NVIDIA-accelerated creator workflow RTX 3060 12GB, after checking application support.
Heavy texture mods RTX 3060 12GB.
AV1 streaming is a priority RX 7600, if your platform and viewers support AV1.
Long-term 1440p ambitions Neither is ideal; look for a stronger card with at least 12GB.
Small or older PC Compare the exact board’s cooler, dimensions, connector, PSU requirement, and airflow.

Alternatives worth considering

If your budget can stretch, a newer RTX 4060-class card may be a more natural NVIDIA upgrade for lower power draw and newer-generation support, but only if its price premium is justified. The RX 7600 XT or a higher-memory Radeon can make more sense for buyers specifically worried about 8GB, although the extra cost must be weighed against the actual performance increase. For serious 1440p ultra gaming, demanding ray tracing, or long-term ownership, moving to a stronger current-generation GPU is more sensible than choosing between these two entry-level options.
