How to Play Any PC Game in VR With SteamVR’s Theater Screen

SteamVR’s Theater Screen lets you play conventional Windows PC games on a giant virtual display. Here’s how to set it up, launch non-Steam titles, and fix common problems.

Yes—you can play most compatible Windows PC games inside a VR headset without a VR mod. SteamVR displays the game as a large, movable 2D screen in a virtual theater.

One terminology update matters: current SteamVR versions call this feature Theater Screen. Valve replaced the older Desktop Game Theater app when SteamVR 2.1 launched in November 2023. The game itself remains a conventional flat-screen game; it is not converted into stereoscopic VR.

What SteamVR’s Theater Screen actually does

Theater Screen places a normal Windows game on a virtual display inside your headset. You can resize, reposition, curve, or hide that screen, creating a cinema-sized view while playing with the controls the game already supports.

This is different from:

  • Native VR: The game renders separate images for each eye, usually with a VR camera, motion-controller support, and a VR-specific interface.
  • VR mods and injectors: Tools such as UEVR or game-specific modifications attempt to adapt a flat game into a more immersive VR experience.
  • Theater Screen: The original game remains flat and is shown on a virtual screen. Head movement changes your view of the screen or theater environment, not the game camera.

So “any game” means a compatible Windows PC game that can launch normally. It does not include every console, mobile, cloud-only, or standalone Quest game, and it does not guarantee that every launcher or anti-cheat system will cooperate.

Valve’s SteamVR release notes describe launching a non-VR application from Steam while SteamVR is running and having it appear on Theater Screen automatically.

What you need

  • A Windows PC capable of running the game.
  • A SteamVR-compatible headset and a working PC-VR connection.
  • Steam and SteamVR installed.
  • The game installed locally or otherwise available through Steam.
  • A suitable gamepad, keyboard, mouse, wheel, HOTAS, arcade stick, or other normal PC input device.

SteamVR supports multiple headset families, including Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus/Rift hardware, Windows Mixed Reality devices, and other compatible headsets. Check the official SteamVR page for current compatibility information.

Using a Quest headset

A Quest headset needs a PC-VR connection; the standalone headset alone does not run an ordinary Windows game through SteamVR. Options include a wired Meta Link connection, Air Link, Virtual Desktop, or Valve’s Steam Link app for VR.

Valve’s Steam Link support information says that Steam and SteamVR must run on the PC, with a supported headset and suitable local network. Valve lists Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E as a router requirement for its supported setup. Wireless results still depend on network congestion, encoding, and latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to play a normal Steam game on the virtual screen

  1. Connect the headset and establish its PC-VR connection.
  2. Start Steam.
  3. Start SteamVR and wait until the headset is fully connected.
  4. Put on the headset and open the SteamVR dashboard if necessary.
  5. Leave SteamVR running. For the cleanest launch, close SteamVR Home or another active VR application first; Valve recommends this although it is not required.
  6. On the PC, open the regular desktop Steam client.
  7. Select the game and click Play.
  8. If Steam displays a launch-choice dialog, choose the ordinary non-VR, desktop, or similarly named option.
  9. Wait for the game to start. SteamVR should place it on the Theater Screen and hide the dashboard.

Launching from desktop Steam is particularly important for games that offer both VR and non-VR modes. The exact wording is decided by the game, so do not assume that a title’s VR option is the one you want. Steamworks supports separate VR and non-VR launch configurations, as documented in Valve’s SteamVR settings documentation.

How to control Theater Screen

Interact with the virtual screen itself. In many setups, you must first click the screen to activate the laser mouse; pointing at it does not necessarily give you control immediately.

  • PC Integration: Seamlessly connects with your PC to access SteamVR's extensive library of virtual reality games, applications, and experiences
  • Renewed with CPS 1-Year Warranty for added hardware protection.

Valve lists controls for:

  • Activating the laser mouse.
  • Turning the screen off.
  • Enabling or disabling dark mode.
  • Adjusting screen curvature.
  • Resizing the screen.
  • Repositioning the screen.

Labels and controller gestures can vary with your SteamVR version, headset, and dashboard configuration. If the pointer seems inactive, aim at the screen and click it before trying to select a game button or window.

How to launch a non-Steam game

The most reliable approach is to add the game or its launcher to Steam:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the desktop Steam client.
  2. Choose Games → Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  3. Select the game executable or its launcher.
  4. Start SteamVR.
  5. Launch the added shortcut from Steam.

This gives SteamVR a Steam-launched application to present. However, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox PC, Battle.net, and other titles may open through separate launchers. DRM, administrator permissions, anti-cheat software, overlays, and launcher behavior can prevent automatic Theater Screen capture.

If that happens, open the SteamVR dashboard and select Desktop. Use the virtual desktop to bring the game window forward and interact with it manually. This is less automatic than Theater Screen but works as a virtual-monitor fallback for many Windows applications.

Alternative launch method: the SteamVR dashboard

  1. Open the SteamVR dashboard with the headset’s system or menu button.
  2. Select the Desktop tab.
  3. Use the virtual desktop to open Steam.
  4. Launch the normal desktop version of the game.
  5. Return to the game window, or wait for SteamVR to present it on Theater Screen.

The exact dashboard layout and button labels vary. Avoid looking for the old Use Desktop Game Theater while SteamVR is active setting as a universal current control. That checkbox belongs to legacy guidance surrounding the retired Desktop Game Theater app.

What “playing any game in VR” does not provide

  • No stereoscopic depth or separate game image for each eye.
  • No VR camera or room-scale movement.
  • No head-controlled aiming unless the game independently supports it.
  • No automatic conversion of motion controllers into game-specific VR controls.
  • No guarantee that games refusing to run alongside SteamVR will work.
  • No bypass for anti-cheat, DRM, launcher, or administrator restrictions.
  • No guarantee that every game window will be captured correctly.

Most flat games are best played with an Xbox-style controller, keyboard and mouse, wheel, HOTAS, or another peripheral they already support. Motion controllers generally act as pointers or generic inputs rather than automatically becoming the game’s intended controls.

Troubleshooting

The game appears only on the monitor

  1. Confirm that the headset is connected and SteamVR is fully running.
  2. Close SteamVR Home or another active VR application.
  3. Launch the game from the regular desktop Steam client.
  4. Choose the non-VR or desktop option if Steam asks.
  5. Open the SteamVR dashboard and check the Desktop tab.
  6. Bring the game window to the foreground.
  7. Close and relaunch the game with SteamVR already running.
  8. For a non-Steam title, add its executable to Steam or use the desktop view manually.

The game launches in native VR

This normally means the game selected its VR launch option. Exit it, launch it again from desktop Steam, and choose the ordinary desktop/non-VR mode. The exact option name is game-specific.

The entire desktop appears instead of the game

SteamVR can sometimes show the complete desktop rather than only the launched window, especially when a title uses multiple windows or a separate launcher. Valve has documented this type of issue.

  • Look for the game window within the displayed desktop.
  • Use the laser mouse to select it.
  • Close unnecessary desktop windows before launching.
  • Launch from desktop Steam rather than a secondary launcher where possible.
  • Restart SteamVR if the wrong window remains visible.

The screen is blank or points to the wrong window

Close the game, close unnecessary launchers and VR applications, then restart SteamVR and launch again from desktop Steam. If the title uses a launcher, start the launcher first and then select the actual game. When automatic presentation still fails, use the dashboard’s Desktop tab.

The game is slow or stuck at a low frame rate

The PC renders the game and SteamVR’s compositor and streaming path add additional work. Performance depends on the game’s resolution and graphics settings, headset resolution, compositor overhead, and—on wireless headsets—video encoding and network latency.

Lower the game’s resolution or graphics preset, close unnecessary VR applications, keep the headset active, reduce wireless congestion, and use a wired connection where practical. Start with moderate settings and increase quality gradually.

Audio comes from the monitor or speakers

Image presentation and audio routing are separate. Check Windows’ active playback device, SteamVR’s audio settings, and the headset manufacturer’s PC-VR software. Restart the game after changing the output device if it continues using the old destination.

Theater Screen versus native VR and VR mods

Method What you see Controls and immersion
SteamVR Theater Screen A flat game on a virtual cinema screen Uses the game’s normal controls; no automatic VR camera
Native VR game A world rendered for both eyes May support room-scale movement, tracked controllers, and VR interfaces
VR mod or injector Varies by game and mod May add depth and VR interaction, but compatibility and setup are title-specific

Choose Theater Screen when you want a giant private display for a conventional game. Choose native VR or a compatible mod when you specifically want stereoscopic depth and a VR camera.

Useful alternatives

SteamVR Desktop view

Use this for non-Steam games, launchers, browsers, or cases where automatic Theater Screen presentation fails. It offers broader Windows access but requires more manual window management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam Link for VR

Steam Link is a first-party wireless PC-VR route for supported Quest, PICO, and HTC headsets. It is convenient when the local network is strong, but image quality and latency depend heavily on that network. Steam and SteamVR still run on the PC.

Meta Link or Air Link

Quest owners can use Meta’s official wired Link or wireless Air Link connection before starting SteamVR. Link generally favors a direct, stable connection; Air Link adds wireless convenience but remains sensitive to network conditions.

Virtual Desktop

Virtual Desktop is a third-party, desktop-focused wireless option for Quest users and others with compatible setups. It can provide broader Windows desktop access and additional streaming controls, but it is not required for SteamVR Theater Screen.

Bigscreen

Bigscreen is a separate virtual cinema and desktop-sharing application. It is aimed at social viewing, shared screens, and a cinema-style environment, and Bigscreen says it is available free on Steam and Meta Quest. It may introduce its own account, network, desktop-streaming, and capture considerations.

Choosing a setup

  • Lowest-cost path: Use an existing gaming PC, compatible headset, Steam, and SteamVR. You do not need to buy a new headset merely to use Theater Screen.
  • Wireless Quest path: Use Steam Link, Meta Link/Air Link, or another compatible PC-VR streaming solution, depending on your network and software preferences.
  • Premium PC-VR path: A SteamVR-native headset such as Bigscreen Beyond can suit users prioritizing a lightweight PC-VR headset. Tracking hardware and controllers may be additional purchases, and the manufacturer says they are required for tracking and most VR games.
  • Social theater path: Choose Bigscreen when shared viewing and social rooms matter more than SteamVR’s straightforward private screen.

Upgrade hardware only when there is an actual gap: no headset, an inadequate gaming PC, an unreliable PC-VR connection, or an uncomfortable existing headset.

Comfort and safety

A giant virtual screen can cause eye strain or motion-related discomfort, especially during long sessions. Start with a moderate size, comfortable distance, and limited curvature rather than placing an enormous screen extremely close to your face. Take regular breaks, use a gamepad for seated games, and keep awareness of furniture and the real play space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Epic Games, GOG, or other non-Steam games?

Usually, yes, if the Windows game runs normally. Add its executable or launcher through Games → Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, or launch it and control the window through SteamVR’s Desktop tab. Separate launchers and anti-cheat or DRM systems can prevent automatic Theater Screen presentation.

Can I use a gamepad?

Yes. A gamepad, keyboard and mouse, wheel, HOTAS, or another normal PC peripheral is generally the best input method. Motion controllers do not automatically become the game’s VR controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Theater Screen make a game stereoscopic?

No. It displays the normal 2D game on a virtual screen. It does not add a VR camera, stereoscopic depth, or room-scale interaction.

Can I use a Quest without a VR-ready PC?

No. An ordinary Windows PC game needs to run on a capable PC. Quest can connect to that PC through Steam Link, Meta Link, Air Link, or another compatible method, but the standalone headset does not replace the gaming PC.

Will anti-cheat games work?

There is no universal guarantee. Theater Screen does not bypass anti-cheat, DRM, administrator restrictions, or launcher requirements. If the game will not run while SteamVR is active, use its documented supported configuration or play it normally on the desktop.

Why does the whole desktop appear?

SteamVR may be presenting the desktop instead of a single game window, particularly with multi-window games and launchers. Select the game window with the laser mouse, close unrelated windows, launch from desktop Steam, or restart SteamVR.
