What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Your Xbox controller usually keeps disconnecting because of a weak battery, failed pairing, wireless interference, outdated firmware, a bad USB cable or port, or an attached accessory such as a headset. Test the controller with fresh AA batteries and a known-good data-capable USB cable first; those two checks quickly separate power and wireless problems from console or controller hardware faults.
Work through these fixes in order
- Replace the batteries. Install fresh AA batteries, even if the existing ones worked recently. If you use a rechargeable battery pack, remove it and check for dirty or loose contacts. A failing pack can cause the same random-disconnect symptoms as depleted batteries.
- Test a wired connection. Connect the controller directly to the Xbox or PC with a known-good USB data cable. Some cables provide power but do not have working data conductors: the Xbox logo may light up, while the controller still disconnects or fails to establish a usable wired connection. Avoid hubs, docking stations and extensions while testing.
- Try another USB port. A loose, damaged or power-limited port can cause repeated reconnects. Use a different port directly on the console or computer.
- Remove every controller accessory. Unplug a 3.5-mm headset, chat adapter and any other accessory, then test again. A damaged plug, adapter or accessory can create apparent controller instability. Xbox treats controller-connected accessories as a separate troubleshooting path; see Xbox’s accessory troubleshooting guidance.
- Power-cycle the controller. Hold its Xbox button for about 10 seconds, until it turns off. Press the button again to restart it. This resets the controller’s current power state; it does not erase firmware.
- Power-cycle the console if necessary. Hold the console’s physical Xbox power button for about 10 seconds until it shuts down. Disconnect power briefly, reconnect it, and turn the console back on using the console button. Restarting the controller is not the same as power-cycling the console. Microsoft documents this procedure in its console power troubleshooting guide.
Update the controller firmware
Firmware updates can resolve compatibility and connection problems. The update process is still supported on current Xbox support pages in 2026, and Microsoft currently calls the Windows utility the Xbox Accessories app.
Update on an Xbox console
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system → Settings → Devices & connections → Accessories.
- Select the controller, then choose … (More options).
- Open Firmware version or Update, depending on the menu shown.
The update option appears only when an update is available. Keep the controller connected throughout the process. The official instructions are in Xbox’s controller firmware guide.
Update on Windows
Install or open the Xbox Accessories app, connect the controller with a USB cable or a supported Xbox Wireless Adapter, open the controller entry, select … (More options), and install the offered firmware update. Bluetooth can be useful for ordinary controller play, but it is not the reliable connection for controller-firmware recovery or updating.

Fix pairing and wireless problems
Pair the controller again
A controller can remain powered on while no longer being associated with the intended Xbox. Press the console’s Pair button, then hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox light flashes and reconnects.
Eliminate interference
If the controller works reliably over USB but disconnects wirelessly, the wireless path is the leading suspect. Move closer to the console and remove obstructions. Also test without nearby wireless equipment, metal enclosures or USB 3.x devices that may interfere with the signal. This pattern points to range or interference rather than depleted batteries alone.

Check other paired devices
Xbox controllers with Bluetooth support can be paired with a PC, phone or tablet as well as an Xbox. A nearby device may reconnect to the controller first. Turn Bluetooth off on those devices, or remove the controller’s Bluetooth pairing while you test the Xbox Wireless connection.
Identify whether the Xbox or controller is at fault
| Test result | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| The controller disconnects on multiple Xbox consoles or PCs | The controller, battery pack, USB connection or wireless hardware |
| Several controllers disconnect from one Xbox | The console’s wireless environment, firmware, USB hardware or system software |
| Only wireless play fails; wired USB play is stable | Pairing, interference, range or wireless hardware |
| Only one rechargeable pack causes the problem | The pack or its contacts |
| The controller works after removing a headset or adapter | The attached accessory or its connector |
Use the same controller and, where possible, the same cable during each test. Change one variable at a time so the result identifies a cause rather than merely producing a temporary recovery.

When should you replace the controller?
Do not replace it solely because it disconnects. First isolate batteries, rechargeable-pack contacts, pairing, wireless interference, firmware, USB cables, USB ports and attached accessories. Replacement or repair becomes reasonable when the controller still disconnects with fresh batteries and a known-good data cable, after firmware and pairing checks, and the same behavior follows it to another Xbox or PC.
