Steam now lets users attach a saved hardware configuration to a game review. Valve introduced the option in the Steam Deck Preview/Beta channel on February 12, 2026, and listed it in the stable Steam Deck Client update on March 9. It is therefore no longer accurate to describe the feature as beta-only, although its availability and public presentation can still vary by client build and page.
The feature adds useful context to performance complaints, but it is not a benchmark, a compatibility guarantee, or proof that the listed hardware was correctly detected or actually produced the reported experience.
What Valve added to Steam reviews
When writing or updating a Steam User Review on a game’s store page, users can optionally attach a saved PC configuration. Steam can generate the configuration from the system instead of requiring the reviewer to type every component manually.
The feature is especially relevant to people comparing desktop PCs, laptops, Steam Decks and other handheld PCs. A reader can potentially see whether a performance complaint came from integrated graphics, an older gaming system, a handheld or a modern high-end desktop.

Valve announced the feature in its February 12 Steam Deck Beta Client update. Valve’s March 9 stable-channel update subsequently listed the same capability.
- February 12, 2026: introduced in the Steam Deck Preview/Beta channel.
- March 9, 2026: included in the stable Steam Deck Client update.
- As of August 18, 2026: not accurately described as beta-only.
- Availability: controls and public visibility may differ by client channel, build, account rollout and page.
How to attach specifications to a review
The reported workflow is:
- Open the Steam client and visit a game’s store page.
- Choose the option to write a review, or open an existing review for editing.
- Enable Attach PC Specs to this review.
- Select a saved PC configuration, or choose Add new PC configuration.
- If Steam prompts you to do so, generate a system-spec profile and give it a name.
- Submit the new review or update the existing one.
During the original beta rollout, users could opt in through Steam → Settings → Interface → Client Beta Participation → Steam Beta Update. That enrollment path was relevant to the beta phase, but it should not be treated as necessary on the stable client after March 9.
Valve’s public patch notes confirm the feature but do not document every current desktop menu label. If the option is missing, check that Steam is fully updated and running as the desktop client rather than a browser page. Interface placement may change as Steam updates.
Can you save more than one computer?
Beta testing reported that users could save multiple hardware configurations. That is useful for someone who alternates between a desktop and laptop, plays on both a Steam Deck and desktop, owns several handhelds, or has upgraded a PC while retaining older reviews.
Because this behavior was reported during testing rather than fully documented in Valve’s public announcement, treat the exact current interface as build-dependent. Most importantly, check that the selected profile matches the system used for the experience described in the review.

What information can the profile include?
Available reporting indicates that a generated configuration may identify items such as the processor, graphics adapter, memory and operating system, along with other system information used to describe the saved machine. Valve’s announcement does not provide a definitive field-by-field list, so the exact display should not be assumed.
A hardware profile is also not a complete test report. It generally does not tell readers:
- Resolution or graphics preset.
- Ray-tracing status.
- Upscaling technology or quality mode.
- Frame-rate cap or target.
- Driver, Proton or SteamOS version.
- Whether the game was installed on an SSD or slower storage.
- Thermal conditions, power mode or background processes.
- Whether the reviewer encountered shader compilation, stutter, crashes or a temporary launch problem.
- Whether the game was actually rendered by the GPU listed in the profile.
In other words, the attachment describes the supposed test system’s identity, not the quality or reproducibility of the test.
Why attached specs are useful
“Runs terribly” means something different on a Steam Deck, a five-year-old laptop and a current high-end desktop. Hardware context helps readers decide whether a complaint is likely to apply to their own machine.
The feature can help reveal patterns such as:
- Problems limited to integrated graphics or older GPUs.
- Optimization issues appearing even on powerful systems.
- Reports specific to handheld hardware or Linux/Proton.
- Differences between desktop and portable performance.
- Whether several users with comparable systems are reporting the same behavior.
Several technically detailed reviews from similar systems provide stronger evidence than one short review. A useful review might still state the resolution, graphics settings, average frame rate, frame-time behavior and the game version; the attached profile simply makes the hardware portion easier to compare.

What the feature cannot prove
An attached configuration does not prove that a game will run well on comparable hardware. It does not establish frame rate, frame-time consistency, image quality or the cause of a problem.
A reviewer may have been affected by a driver regression, shader-cache issue, game patch, memory leak, CPU bottleneck, thermal throttling or Proton version. Conversely, a reviewer may blame the game when the system is below the practical performance requirement. A profile can also be stale after a hardware upgrade or may not represent the parts used during the session.
Steam reviews remain subjective. The attachment is additional evidence, not an authenticity badge or Valve-verified technical assessment.
Rollout limitations and hardware-detection problems
Public visibility was initially inconsistent
During the beta, PCWorld reported that users could enable and submit the attachment before the specifications appeared consistently on public review pages. Later user reports suggested that visibility could differ between review lists and individual review pages.
The important distinction is between being able to create or attach a profile and having other users see it. Valve’s presentation may vary by client version or page, so do not assume that every attached profile appears everywhere.

Steam may detect the wrong GPU
A Steam Client Beta report described an Intel integrated GPU being listed even though the system used an NVIDIA RTX 4080 for gaming. The report involved a particular system and should not be treated as proof that every hybrid-GPU laptop fails, but it demonstrates why reviewers should visually verify the generated profile.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Extra caution is sensible with:
- Hybrid laptops with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Linux systems with multiple adapters.
- External GPUs and docked handhelds.
- Virtual machines.
- Systems with disabled or missing drivers.
- Recently upgraded PCs.
Steam running on one GPU does not necessarily mean that the game rendered on that same adapter.
Creating a configuration can fail
Another Steam Client Beta discussion described an error stating that configuration creation could only be performed within the Steam Client, with different behavior reported across Windows and Linux. This is anecdotal and version-specific, not an official Valve diagnosis.
If Add new PC configuration fails:
- Confirm that Steam is running as the desktop client, not only in a browser.
- Restart Steam completely.
- Check whether the client is using Stable, Beta or Preview.
- Try the review workflow again.
- If the problem is limited to one branch, consider another branch only if you are comfortable with beta software.
- Do not disable an integrated GPU or remove drivers simply to force detection.
- If the profile remains wrong, leave the attachment disabled rather than publishing misleading information.
Privacy: optional does not mean consequence-free
The hardware attachment is optional and was reported as disabled by default during beta testing. Users do not have to disclose their configuration.
However, a distinctive combination of components can contribute to fingerprinting or make a user’s setup easier to recognize when combined with a detailed public Steam profile, a rare CPU/GPU pairing, a specific laptop model, an unusual handheld or personal details in the review.

Valve’s public announcement does not provide a complete field-by-field explanation of display, retention or deletion for review-attached configurations. Do not assume that the information is permanently stored, broadly anonymous or used for any particular purpose beyond what Valve documents. If your configuration is sensitive, omit the attachment.
How this differs from Valve’s other systems
| Feature | What it tells users |
|---|---|
| Attached PC specs | The system configuration associated with an individual review, subject to user choice and detection accuracy. |
| Steam Hardware & Software Survey | Aggregate platform-wide hardware and software statistics from an optional, anonymous survey. |
| Steam Deck Verified | Valve’s compatibility assessment and customer-facing results for a title on Steam Deck. |
| User review text | A subjective account of one player’s experience. |
The review attachment is not the same as the Hardware Survey, and it is not Steam Deck Verified. Verified ratings come from Valve’s compatibility-review process; a user-associated hardware profile is not an official certification.
How buyers should use the information
- Compare the game’s official minimum and recommended requirements with your own system.
- Read multiple reviews, not just the most recent or most extreme one.
- Prioritize reviews that include resolution, settings, frame rate and frame-time or stutter details.
- Look for reports from similar GPUs, CPUs, operating systems and handhelds.
- Check Steam Deck’s compatibility rating separately if you play on a Deck.
- Pay attention to the game’s current patch state, especially after a launch or major update.
- Test promptly after purchase within the refund rules that apply to your account and region.
Do not buy a new GPU, laptop or handheld solely because one review reports poor performance. The cause may be a game bug, driver issue, shader stutter, Linux compatibility problem or incorrect detection rather than insufficient hardware.
Bottom line
Valve’s hardware attachments make Steam reviews more useful by answering one previously missing question: what kind of system did this reviewer associate with the review? They do not answer what settings were used, how many frames the game delivered or whether the hardware profile is accurate.
