The 2025 ASUS ROG Flow Z13 is a Windows 11 gaming tablet with laptop-class hardware, a detachable keyboard, a built-in kickstand, and AMD Ryzen AI Max processors. In its top configuration, it pairs the 16-core Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with integrated Radeon 8060S graphics—an unusually powerful combination for a tablet-sized PC.
The catch is that it is not a lightweight, console-like tablet. It is expensive, actively cooled, dependent on a large 200W charger for maximum performance, and still has to make compromises that a conventional gaming laptop can avoid.
The short version
The ROG Flow Z13 is best understood as a compact gaming laptop disguised as a detachable Windows tablet. It can serve as a touchscreen tablet, a keyboard-equipped laptop, a controller-powered gaming machine, or a desktop replacement connected to a monitor and peripherals.
That makes the “Surface Pro on steroids” comparison useful—but only as a description of the design. A Surface Pro generally prioritizes productivity, portability, pen input, and battery-conscious operation. The Flow Z13 prioritizes CPU and GPU power, active cooling, a high-refresh display, and gaming performance.

What the ROG Flow Z13 actually is
This is a Windows 11 tablet PC rather than an Android gaming tablet or an iPad-style media device. Its rear kickstand supports the screen, while the detachable keyboard turns it into a conventional laptop. For games, most buyers will want an external controller because the device has no built-in handheld controls.
It can be used in four main ways:
- Tablet mode: touchscreen browsing, media, drawing, and light productivity.
- Laptop mode: keyboard-attached work and desktop applications.
- Gaming mode: a controller-equipped Windows gaming system.
- Desktop mode: an external monitor, dock, mouse, keyboard, and other peripherals.
The design is flexible, but the flexibility comes with laptop-like baggage: a cooling system, a substantial power adapter, and a keyboard that may not feel as comfortable as a full-size laptop keyboard.
Why the hardware is unusual
The high-end Flow Z13 uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395. Its headline specifications include 16 Zen 5 CPU cores, 32 threads, boost speeds up to 5.1GHz, 40 Radeon graphics compute units, and an NPU rated for up to 50 TOPS. ASUS lists 80MB of combined cache, while AMD lists a configurable processor power range of 45–120W and a 55W default TDP.
The important point is not simply that the processor is fast. It carries an unusually large integrated GPU, marketed as Radeon 8060S, in the same package as the CPU. That GPU uses unified system memory instead of a separate graphics card with dedicated VRAM. The less expensive Ryzen AI Max 390 configuration uses Radeon 8050S graphics.

It does not, however, turn the Flow Z13 into a desktop graphics card. Performance still depends on the power limit, cooling, drivers, game engine, resolution, graphics settings, and whether the tablet is plugged in.
Radeon 8060S: powerful integrated graphics, not magic
The Radeon 8060S is much more substantial than the integrated graphics found in most productivity-focused tablets. That makes the Flow Z13 unusually capable for a device of this shape, particularly at lower internal resolutions and with sensible graphics settings.
But integrated graphics still share power and memory bandwidth with the CPU. Ray tracing can be demanding, newer AAA games vary considerably by engine, and there is no dedicated VRAM pool. Claims that the tablet delivers universal “desktop RTX” performance or runs every demanding game smoothly would be too broad without game-specific testing on the exact ASUS configuration.
AMD’s platform specifications establish what the chip is capable of on paper; they are not a substitute for independent testing of the finished Flow Z13 chassis. Battery mode, silent mode, balanced mode, and turbo mode can produce meaningfully different results.

The 180Hz display is excellent—and demanding
The screen is a 13.4-inch 16:10 touchscreen with a 2560×1600 resolution, 180Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, 500 nits of brightness, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, Pantone validation, and Dolby Vision support, according to ASUS.
That combination is valuable beyond gaming. The 16:10 ratio provides more vertical workspace than 16:9, while the wide color coverage suits photo and video work. The 180Hz refresh rate can make compatible games and everyday scrolling feel more responsive.
It also creates a practical compromise. Rendering modern games at the panel’s full 2560×1600 resolution is substantially more demanding than rendering at 1920×1200 or 1920×1080. Many games will make more sense with resolution scaling or an upscaler enabled. The display supports 180Hz; that does not mean the Radeon GPU will drive every demanding game at 180 frames per second, especially at native resolution.
Memory: capacity is not the same as speed
US configurations include 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of memory, paired with a 1TB SSD. AMD lists LPDDR5X support up to 128GB and a 256-bit memory interface for the Ryzen AI Max+ 395.

More memory can help with large games, multitasking, content creation, and local AI workloads. It also gives the integrated GPU more room to share system memory. But 128GB does not automatically produce proportionally higher frame rates than 64GB. Buyers should distinguish between:
- Capacity: how much memory is installed.
- Bandwidth: how quickly the processor and GPU can access it.
- Allocation: how much memory Windows allows the GPU to use.
- Performance: the result in a particular game or application.
For ordinary gaming, 32GB may be sufficient. The 64GB and 128GB versions make more sense for heavy multitasking, professional creative work, large projects, and buyers who want additional headroom. Verify the exact retail SKU before buying; memory serviceability and upgrade options should not be assumed.
Configurations and pricing
ASUS has listed several US configurations, but its announcement pricing and later storefront pricing do not match for every model. That means the exact SKU matters more than a generic “starts at” figure.

Ports and connectivity
The Flow Z13 is better equipped than many thin tablets. ASUS lists:
- Two USB-C ports with USB4, DisplayPort 2.1, and USB Power Delivery.
- One HDMI 2.1 port.
- One USB-A 3.2 port.
- UHS-II microSD card reader.
- 3.5mm combo audio jack.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- 13MP rear camera and 5MP IR camera.
That is enough for many portable setups, but a desk-based configuration may still need a dock or hub for Ethernet, extra USB devices, storage, and multiple displays. HDMI 2.1 and USB-C display output are especially useful for connecting a larger gaming monitor.
Battery life and the 200W problem
The tablet has a 70Wh battery and ships with a 200W ASUS Slim power adapter. The battery capacity is substantial for a tablet, but high-power CPU and GPU hardware can consume energy quickly.
Expect the best gaming performance while plugged in. High refresh rates, high brightness, performance modes, and demanding games will all reduce runtime. USB-C charging may be convenient for travel, but a smaller charger may not sustain maximum performance unless it supports the required power profile.

The charger is the clearest reminder that this is not a simple grab-and-go tablet. The Flow Z13 weighs 2.65 pounds without its keyboard and 3.51 pounds with it; the 200W adapter adds more weight. Add a controller, and the complete gaming kit is considerably less tablet-like than the screen alone suggests.

A high-wattage processor and large integrated GPU need active cooling in a thin chassis. The tablet’s physical design therefore matters as much as its specifications.
Official specifications do not establish fan noise, surface temperatures, sustained clock speeds, battery-mode performance, or throttling. Those require testing of the final retail unit. In practical terms, buyers should expect a device that can become audible under sustained gaming and warm around the rear panel and vent area. Lap use may be less comfortable than it is with a low-power productivity tablet, and the kickstand works best on a stable, flat surface.
The detachable keyboard also changes the ergonomics. It is useful for travel and short work sessions, but anyone writing or coding for hours should compare it with a full-size laptop keyboard or plan to use an external keyboard at a desk.

Is it really a Surface Pro on steroids?
The comparison works at the level of form factor:
- Tablet-first silhouette.
- Detachable keyboard.
- Integrated kickstand.
- Touchscreen Windows interface.
- Desktop applications.
- Stylus and external-display potential.
The priorities are fundamentally different. The Flow Z13 adds gaming-oriented cooling, a much higher-power platform, a 180Hz screen, and unusually capable integrated graphics. It is also thicker, heavier in a complete travel kit, more expensive, and more dependent on a large charger.
So it is not accurate to say that it simply “beats the Surface Pro.” The more useful conclusion is that Surface Pro emphasizes productivity-tablet portability, while the Flow Z13 applies the same broad 2-in-1 idea to high-performance gaming and creative work.
Who should buy it?
The Flow Z13 makes sense for buyers who value its unusual combination of features:
- You want one Windows machine for gaming, work, and creative applications.
- You prefer a large touchscreen to a traditional gaming handheld.
- You want a high-refresh display and strong integrated graphics without carrying a separate gaming laptop and tablet.
- You can benefit from 64GB or 128GB of memory for demanding applications.
- You already own a desktop and want a powerful portable secondary PC.
It is a poor fit if you primarily need web browsing, office work, note-taking, media playback, or long battery life. It is also a questionable value if you do not care about the tablet design. A conventional gaming laptop can often provide a stronger discrete GPU, larger cooling system, more comfortable keyboard, and better performance per dollar.
How it compares with alternatives
Microsoft Surface Pro
The Surface Pro is the better match for productivity-first tablet use, pen workflows, and Microsoft ecosystem integration. The Flow Z13 is the more compelling choice for demanding native PC games and sustained graphics workloads. Compare specific generations and configurations rather than treating every Surface Pro as identical.
ROG Ally or ROG Ally X
The ROG Ally family has built-in controls and is easier to use as a handheld gaming system. It is lighter and more console-like, but offers a smaller screen and less useful tablet and keyboard functionality.
Steam Deck
The Steam Deck is better suited to lower-cost, controller-first gaming and SteamOS simplicity. The Flow Z13 is aimed at users who need Windows desktop applications, a large high-resolution display, and much more CPU and GPU headroom.
Conventional gaming laptop
A gaming laptop is usually the rational choice when maximum gaming performance matters more than tablet functionality. It can offer a discrete GPU, larger cooling solution, full-size keyboard, more upgrade potential, and stronger performance per dollar.

The 2025 ASUS ROG Flow Z13 is one of the most ambitious Windows gaming tablets available in its product class. Its Ryzen AI Max platform gives the detachable-tablet format far more CPU and integrated-GPU capability than readers normally expect, while the 1600p 180Hz touchscreen makes it attractive for both games and creative work.
But the performance comes with real costs: premium pricing, active cooling, uncertain battery endurance under load, a bulky 200W charger, tablet-style ergonomics, and the need to tune resolution and settings in demanding games. It is a compelling single-device solution for someone who genuinely wants a gaming tablet. It is not a sensible replacement for a conventional tablet—or a gaming laptop—unless that hybrid design is the reason you are buying it.
