For current tModLoader, the key questions are whether you are using the current 64-bit build, whether Windows is running out of available or virtual memory, and whether a mod or texture pack is consuming too many resources.
These six methods address different causes. Only using an appropriate 64-bit build and configuring Windows virtual memory directly relate to addressable or virtual memory; the other fixes reduce memory pressure or repair the underlying problem.

First: identify the problem
Do not treat every stutter or crash as a RAM shortage. More installed RAM generally does not increase FPS when Terraria is limited by the CPU, GPU, renderer, drivers, world simulation, or a faulty mod.

RAM capacity is most relevant when you use a large tModLoader mod list, high-resolution texture packs, several memory-heavy applications, or a system that is paging data to storage. Vanilla Terraria lists 4 GB of memory for Windows in its Steam support information, while the current tModLoader Steam listing specifies 6 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended for Windows. Those are not interchangeable requirements: tModLoader is a separate application with separate requirements. See Terraria’s Steam support requirements and the tModLoader Steam listing.
Vanilla Terraria or tModLoader?
- Vanilla: launch the Terraria entry and play without mods.
- tModLoader: launch the separate tModLoader entry and use mods, mod configurations, and Workshop content.
Use tModLoader-specific troubleshooting only when you are actually launching tModLoader. Its installation and platform context are documented at tmodloader.org.
Check memory usage in Windows
- Start Terraria or tModLoader and load the world or mod profile that causes the problem.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes or Details, find
Terraria.exe,tModLoader.exe, or the relevant game process. - Watch process memory, total memory in use, available memory, committed memory, and disk activity while reproducing the problem.
Task Manager is evidence, not a complete diagnosis. A process can fail because of address-space exhaustion, a mod bug, graphics-resource exhaustion, corrupted content, or runtime failure even when physical RAM appears available.
Six methods that can help
1. Use the current 64-bit tModLoader build
This matters primarily for heavily modded play or legacy installations. A 32-bit process has a much smaller usable address space than a 64-bit process, which makes large mod lists more likely to hit memory limits.

Current tModLoader development includes a 64-bit launcher check and does not support launching on a 32-bit operating system in the referenced current branch. Confirm that Windows is 64-bit in Settings → System → About → System type, then install and launch tModLoader through its current official Steam entry. The relevant launcher logic is visible in the tModLoader source tree.
Do not download random patched executables, DLL replacements, repacks, or pirated builds. Old guides recommending a separate “tModLoader 64-bit” package may refer to legacy releases; the commonly circulated third-party project is not a universal solution for current tModLoader.
2. Keep Windows virtual memory enabled
The Windows page file is storage used as virtual memory. It is much slower than physical RAM, so it does not turn an 8 GB computer into a 16 GB computer, but it can help prevent allocation failures when committed memory is too high.
The safest default is to let Windows manage the page file:

- Open Advanced system settings.
- Under Performance, select Settings.
- Open the Advanced tab and select Change under Virtual memory.
- Keep Automatically manage paging file size for all drives enabled unless you are troubleshooting a reproducible allocation failure.
If you must configure it manually, clear that option, select the system drive, choose Custom size, enter values with adequate free disk space, apply the change, and restart if prompted. Microsoft documents an example initial size of 1.5 times installed RAM for a specific memory-allocation problem; that is not a universal Terraria requirement. Follow Microsoft’s guidance at its page-file troubleshooting page.
Never disable the page file merely because the computer has substantial RAM. If disk usage becomes excessive after changing it, return to System managed size, reduce mod and background-app usage, and check whether the drive has sufficient free space.
3. Close applications consuming system memory
Close browsers with many tabs, video editors, virtual machines, other games, launchers, and unnecessary overlays before starting a large mod profile. This frees system memory for all applications; it does not assign a special RAM reserve to Terraria.
On an 8 GB system, this can be particularly important because current tModLoader lists 6 GB as its Windows minimum. If memory remains nearly full during normal use, restarting Windows can also clear unusually high usage from a long session.

4. Reduce mods and texture-pack size
For tModLoader, this is often more effective than trying to force a larger allocation. Back up your characters, worlds, and mod configuration first, then:
- Disable all mods and test a clean profile.
- Re-enable mods in groups until the failure returns.
- Remove outdated, duplicate, unusually large, or incompatible content.
- Reduce or remove high-resolution texture packs.
- Check the relevant mod’s issue tracker for memory leaks and compatibility problems.
Do not remove content from a valuable world casually: a world or character may depend on modded items or tiles. tModLoader’s troubleshooting guidance also points to excessive mod memory use, virtual-memory configuration, and hardware capacity as possible causes of out-of-memory errors. 5. Repair or update Terraria and tModLoader
Verification does not increase RAM, but it can repair corrupted executables, missing content, failed updates, or broken loader files.
- Exit Terraria and tModLoader.
- In Steam, right-click the relevant entry and choose Properties.
- Use Steam’s option to verify the installation files.
- If the problem involves modded play, verify both Terraria and tModLoader.

6. Test graphics and renderer settings
Changing graphics settings can improve stability or reduce resource pressure, but it is not RAM allocation. Test lower resolution, fullscreen versus borderless or windowed mode, reduced lighting and particle effects, and disabled overlays. Use only renderer options documented for your specific tModLoader version and operating system; historical DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan flags are not universal current commands. Steam’s -Xmx launch option
Steam’s Properties → General → Launch Options field can pass supported arguments to a game, but it is not a generic memory control. -Xmx and -Xms are associated with Java heap configuration and are not verified Terraria solutions. If a launch-option experiment prevents the game from starting, remove every custom option from this field, restart Steam, verify files, and test an unmodified installation.
Process priority
Changing Terraria to Realtime priority does not assign physical RAM or enlarge its memory limit. It changes CPU scheduling and can make Windows less responsive. Do not use it as a memory fix.
Registry tweaks and “RAM optimizers”
There is no credible Terraria-specific utility that safely creates physical RAM. Avoid arbitrary registry edits and software promising to unlock a hidden Terraria memory limit.

Consider an upgrade when Windows repeatedly reaches high committed or physical-memory usage, disk activity shows sustained paging, and the problem persists with a clean or sensibly sized mod profile. Physical RAM is preferable to relying on the page file.
Before buying, check whether the computer supports DDR4 or DDR5, whether it uses laptop SO-DIMMs or desktop DIMMs, the maximum supported capacity, available slots, and whether a matched kit is required. Do not buy memory solely because Terraria reports an out-of-memory error; first rule out a broken mod, corrupted installation, and an unsuitable legacy build.

Recovery checklist
- Back up worlds, characters, and configurations.
- Record Windows architecture, Terraria/tModLoader version, mod count, and when the crash occurs.
- Remove custom Steam launch options.
- Confirm Windows is 64-bit for current tModLoader.
- Keep the page file enabled and return manual settings to system-managed sizing if performance worsens.
- Reproduce the failure with a clean profile, then report a persistent mod-specific problem to the relevant tracker with logs.
