The Mac App Store listing specifies Apple M1 or later and macOS 14.0 or later. Steam lists 81 GB of required available storage, while the App Store shows an application size of 76.6 GB when checked. Those figures describe different things: reserve more than either amount for installation overhead, patches, save data and normal macOS operation.
A base M1 technically satisfies the listed platform requirement, but the stores do not provide a detailed M1-versus-M2, M3 or M4 performance table. Results can vary with memory, GPU core count, resolution, graphics settings, cooling and sustained thermal load. There are no reliable Mac-specific frame-rate targets in the cited listings, so claims that every M1 Mac will deliver a particular resolution or frame rate should be treated skeptically.

What makes this different from running the Windows version
This is a dedicated Mac application, not simply the Windows release running through a compatibility layer. The App Store identifies it as “Only for Mac,” and Steam provides separate macOS requirements for an Apple processor.
That means a supported Apple Silicon Mac can install the game directly. Windows, Boot Camp, Parallels, CrossOver, Wine and a cloud-gaming service are not prerequisites. CrossOver can still be relevant to someone who owns only a Windows edition or needs a workaround, but it is no longer the normal route for playing Dead Island 2 on a compatible Mac.
Where to buy Dead Island 2 for Mac
The two local-installation storefronts are separate ecosystems. Choose the one where you want the purchase, achievements, cloud features and library membership to live; do not assume that buying one version automatically grants the other.

Solo play, co-op and account requirements
Dead Island 2 supports single-player play and online co-op. PLAION’s Steam FAQ documents PC cross-play between Steam and Epic versions.
Steam lists Epic Online Services as a third-party account requirement. That does not mean the Epic Games Launcher must be installed for ordinary Steam play: PLAION says the launcher is not required. An Epic account may be needed for cross-play-related friends-list functionality involving Epic users.

How to install it from the Mac App Store
- Open About This Mac and confirm that the Mac has an Apple M1 chip or later.
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and confirm that macOS 14.0 or later is installed. Make a current backup before a major system update.
- Make sure the Mac has at least the listed 81 GB available, preferably with additional free space.
- Open the Dead Island 2 Ultimate Edition listing in the Mac App Store.
- Purchase or download the game, then launch it from Applications or Launchpad.
- Complete any requested permissions and account-linking steps, particularly if you plan to use online features.
How to install it through Steam
- Install the current Steam client for macOS.
- Purchase or redeem a compatible edition of Dead Island 2.
- Before downloading, confirm that Steam displays the macOS and Apple-processor requirements for your system.
- Install the game to a drive with more than the listed storage requirement available.
- Launch it from your Steam library and complete any Epic Online Services prompts.
- Use the in-game online or co-op menus to invite friends.
Which version should you choose?
Choose the Mac App Store version if you want convenience
The Mac App Store is the simplest choice for users who want a Mac-only installation, Apple storefront distribution, Game Center support, Family Sharing for up to six family members and the listed Ultimate Edition bundle. It is less attractive if you already own Dead Island 2 on Steam or only want the standard game at the lowest observed upfront price.
Choose Steam if your library is already there
Steam is the natural option for existing Steam owners or anyone who wants Steam achievements, Steam Cloud and Steam library integration. It also makes more sense if you expect to move between Mac and Windows within the Steam ecosystem. However, the available sources do not guarantee that saves transfer between the Steam, Epic and Mac App Store versions.
Choose cloud gaming for an unsupported or storage-limited Mac
Xbox Cloud Gaming lists Dead Island 2 as playable with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate in the United States. Cloud play avoids a large local installation and can help if your Mac does not meet the native requirements, but it depends on internet quality and may introduce latency, image compression, subscription requirements and regional catalog changes.

Use CrossOver only for a specific workaround
CrossOver or another compatibility layer may suit someone who owns only the Windows edition or needs to run a different Windows-specific setup. For a compatible M1-or-newer Mac, however, the supported native Mac build is the cleaner starting point.
Common problems and what to check
Apple Silicon is present, but installation is blocked
Check the exact chip, macOS version and free space first. The documented requirements are Apple M1 or later, macOS 14.0 or later, 16 GB of memory and 81 GB of available storage. Also check the storefront region, the edition you purchased and whether an organization-managed Mac restricts App Store or Steam installations.
The game runs poorly
The store listings do not provide Mac-specific performance targets. As general troubleshooting, lower resolution or graphics quality, close background applications, keep a laptop connected to power, install game and macOS updates, and avoid filling the internal drive almost completely. Actively cooled Macs may be better suited to sustained sessions than passively cooled models, but the cited sources do not provide comparative benchmarks.
Steam is asking about Epic Online Services
This is expected: Steam lists Epic Online Services as a third-party account requirement. PLAION says the Epic Games Launcher is not required for normal Steam play, although account linking may be required for cross-play and friends-list functions involving Epic users.
You want to use a Windows save
Do not assume cross-save. The reviewed official material does not explicitly guarantee save compatibility across Windows and Mac, or between Steam, Epic and the Mac App Store. Confirm the publisher’s current platform-specific documentation before buying a second copy based on an expected save transfer.
The practical answer
Owners of an Apple M1-or-newer Mac running macOS 14 or later can install the official Mac version of Dead Island 2 without Windows or a compatibility layer. The main decision is the storefront: the Mac App Store offers the listed Ultimate Edition and Apple ecosystem features, while Steam is better for players who prioritize their Steam library and related features. Cloud gaming remains an alternative for unsupported Macs or users who cannot spare the local storage.
