Yes—the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 is available as a universal App Store app for compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. It launched on December 10, 2024. The download is free, but only a limited section is playable without buying the full game, which is listed at $39.99 in the U.S. App Store as of August 18, 2026.
The Apple version supports purchase sharing and save-data transfer between compatible iOS and Mac devices, but it requires modern Apple silicon and has several limitations compared with console and PC editions.
What is available?
This is Capcom’s modern remake released in 2019—not the original 1998 PlayStation game. It uses over-the-shoulder third-person gameplay, redesigned environments, updated visuals, and modern controls.
The Apple port was released on December 10, 2024. The introductory $9.99 price ended on January 8, 2025, so launch coverage quoting that price is outdated. Apple’s current U.S. listing shows the full game at $39.99.

Price: free download, paid full game
The app costs nothing to download, but the free version is a trial rather than the complete game. The full story requires the in-app Resident Evil 2 Base Game purchase.

- All In-game Rewards Unlocked: $4.99, an optional purchase that unlocks rewards obtainable through the game’s records system.
The $4.99 purchase is not the game itself. Prices can vary by country, currency, taxes, and future App Store changes.
Compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices
Apple’s live listing is the final authority for a specific model, but the current minimum requirements are:

That means older iPhones and iPads without the required chip are excluded, and Intel Macs are not supported. Newer Apple hardware may be added to the live compatibility list over time, so check the App Store page before downloading.

One purchase across Apple devices
Capcom says a full-game purchase on the supported iOS version also covers the Mac version, and a Mac purchase covers the iOS version. You should not need to buy the game twice on compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.
The purchase is tied to the Apple account that bought it. Capcom also says the in-app content cannot be shared with other members through Family Sharing.
If the paid game does not appear after reinstalling or moving to another device, confirm that the same Apple account is being used. From the title screen, open Online Store and choose Restore. Do not purchase the game again before checking the account and restore option.
Cross-save and iCloud setup
Capcom documents play-data transfer between the Apple versions through iCloud Drive. This is separate from restoring the purchase license.

- Enable iCloud Drive on the relevant iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- From the game’s title screen, open iCloud.
- Enable iCloud Automatic Sync.
If saves do not appear on another device, check that both devices use the intended Apple account, iCloud Drive is enabled, and iCloud Automatic Sync is turned on in the game. Capcom describes this as iCloud-based play-data transfer; it should not be treated as a universal cross-platform save system for PlayStation, Xbox, or PC.
Controls: use a controller if possible
The iPhone and iPad versions can be played with touch controls, but Capcom recommends an Apple-compatible controller for a better experience. Not every controller is guaranteed to work as intended.
Most importantly for handheld players, the iOS version does not support keyboard and mouse controls. Touch input is a useful fallback, but a controller is the better choice for aiming, movement, and inventory management in a demanding survival-horror game. Capcom confirms controller support for Mac as well, but its Mac FAQ does not establish keyboard-and-mouse support for this game specifically.
Storage and internet requirements
Storage figures are confusing because App Store package metadata and the final installed game data do not appear to match. The Mac listing reports approximately 22.1 GB, while the iPad listing reports approximately 733.8 MB—likely an initial package figure rather than the complete installed footprint. Launch coverage reported roughly 31 GB and advised having at least twice the app size available during installation.

In practical terms, check the current listing for your exact platform and keep substantially more free space than the initial download figure. Expect the complete installation to require tens of gigabytes, and do not begin with only the minimum listed space available.
Apple’s listing currently says that a network connection is required when starting the application. Later reports suggest this requirement may have changed in some updates, but the current listing does not clearly establish reliable offline startup. Launch the game once while online and do not assume offline play until the current version confirms it.

Capcom says the basic game content is the same as on other hardware versions, with some differences caused by hardware and controller specifications. That does not guarantee feature-for-feature parity with every console or PC release.
Possible differences include platform-specific achievements or trophies, console controller features such as advanced haptics, graphics options, and other platform services. The Apple app is also not compatible with RESIDENT EVIL.NET.

The Apple release is best for Apple-silicon owners who value portability, already own a compatible controller, or want to move between Mac, iPad, and iPhone. A console or PC version is a better fit for owners of unsupported Apple hardware, players who prioritize maximum graphics and platform features, or anyone who specifically wants keyboard-and-mouse controls on a handheld device.
Bottom line
Resident Evil 2 is genuinely available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but “free” means a free download with a limited playable portion—not a free full game. Check your chip and operating-system requirements, reserve substantial storage, and use a controller if possible. For compatible Apple users who want portability, the $39.99 purchase is also usable across iOS and Mac under the same Apple account, with saves transferable through iCloud Drive.
