Short answer: You usually cannot pair a regular Bluetooth speaker directly with an Xbox Series S like you would with a phone or laptop. The reliable workaround is to pair the speaker with your TV, or connect a Bluetooth transmitter to the TV or an HDMI audio extractor.

The simplest setup is Xbox Series S → HDMI → TV → Bluetooth speaker. If your TV does not support Bluetooth audio, use its 3.5mm or optical output with a Bluetooth transmitter. For a monitor without an audio output, an HDMI audio extractor can separate the Xbox’s sound from its video.

Can you connect a Bluetooth speaker directly to an Xbox Series S?

Not normally. The Xbox Series S is not designed to accept an ordinary Bluetooth speaker as a console audio output. Its wireless accessory system is Xbox Wireless, not the same general-purpose Bluetooth audio pairing used by phones, tablets and computers.

That means your speaker will generally not appear in the Xbox’s normal accessory or audio-output menus. Bluetooth support associated with some Xbox controllers or Xbox mobile and PC features does not mean that the console can pair with any Bluetooth speaker.

The Series S sends audio primarily through HDMI or compatible Xbox accessories. Microsoft’s published specifications list one HDMI 2.1 port, three USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and a dedicated Xbox Wireless radio, along with support for formats such as LPCM, Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Atmos. See the official Xbox Series S specifications.

A generic USB Bluetooth dongle is not a dependable fix either. A USB port does not automatically give the Xbox drivers, audio routing or accessory support required by a Bluetooth transmitter. Xbox discusses USB accessory behavior separately in its USB port guidance.

Method 1: Pair the speaker with your TV

This is the best first option because the Xbox already sends both video and audio to the TV over HDMI.

  1. Connect the Xbox Series S to the TV with HDMI.
  2. Turn on the Xbox, TV and Bluetooth speaker.
  3. Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode. Being powered on is not always enough; use the speaker’s dedicated pairing button if it has one.
  4. Open the TV’s Settings.
  5. Look for a menu named Sound, Audio Output, Speakers, Bluetooth Audio or Bluetooth Speaker List.
  6. Select the Bluetooth speaker from the TV’s device list.
  7. Change the TV’s active audio output to the paired speaker.
  8. Launch a game and test both game audio and Xbox system sounds.

The exact menu depends on the TV’s brand, model, firmware and region. Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense, Roku TV and Fire TV devices use different labels and menus. Some televisions support Bluetooth only for headphones, while others support Bluetooth speakers. Some also allow only one Bluetooth audio device at a time or disable the built-in speakers while Bluetooth audio is active. Consult the TV manufacturer’s manual if you cannot find an audio-output option.

Method 2: Use a Bluetooth transmitter

If the TV cannot act as a Bluetooth audio host, connect a Bluetooth transmitter to an available audio output. A transmitter receives audio through a cable and sends it wirelessly to the speaker.

Using the TV’s 3.5mm output

  1. Connect the transmitter to the TV’s 3.5mm headphone or audio output.
  2. Power the transmitter through USB or its supplied adapter.
  3. Set the TV’s audio output to headphones, external speakers or the corresponding analog output.
  4. Put the transmitter into transmit mode and pairing mode.
  5. Put the Bluetooth speaker into pairing mode.
  6. Wait for the transmitter and speaker to connect, then test the volume and game audio.

Using the TV’s optical output

  1. Connect the TV’s optical or TOSLINK output to the transmitter’s optical input.
  2. Set the TV’s digital audio format to PCM or Stereo PCM.
  3. Pair the transmitter with the Bluetooth speaker.
  4. Select optical output on the TV if the television requires that setting.

PCM is important. Many Bluetooth transmitters do not decode Dolby Digital, DTS or multichannel signals. If the TV sends a surround bitstream, the speaker may remain silent or receive an incompatible signal. Stereo PCM is usually the safest format for a single Bluetooth speaker.

Before buying a transmitter, confirm that it has the correct input, supports transmit mode and accepts stereo PCM. Optical, 3.5mm and HDMI ARC/eARC transmitters are not interchangeable.

Method 3: Use an HDMI audio extractor

An HDMI audio extractor is useful when a monitor has HDMI video but no speakers, headphone jack or Bluetooth audio output. It splits the Xbox’s HDMI signal into video for the display and audio for a transmitter or wired speaker.

  1. Connect the Xbox to the extractor’s HDMI input.
  2. Connect the extractor’s HDMI output to the TV or monitor.
  3. Connect the extractor’s 3.5mm or optical audio output to a Bluetooth transmitter.
  4. Set the Xbox and extractor to a stereo or PCM-compatible audio path.
  5. Pair the transmitter with the Bluetooth speaker.

Check the extractor’s specifications carefully. If you play at 120Hz or use HDR, VRR or ALLM, verify that the extractor supports the exact video mode you need. Some inexpensive models limit resolution or refresh rate, interfere with HDR or VRR, fail HDCP passthrough or do not pass 4K at 120Hz. An extractor is a fallback for displays without a usable audio output, not automatically an upgrade over TV Bluetooth.

Set the Xbox audio format

On the current Xbox interface, open:

Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Volume & audio output

Under the speaker or HDMI audio options, choose Stereo uncompressed when routing sound to one Bluetooth speaker, a basic TV output or a transmitter that supports stereo PCM. Menu names can vary slightly after system updates, by language and according to the connected hardware.

Dolby Digital, DTS or Atmos can work only when every part of the chain supports the selected format: the Xbox, HDMI device, TV or extractor, transmitter and speaker. A single Bluetooth speaker normally needs a two-channel signal and cannot reproduce a full multichannel Atmos setup. Xbox provides additional context through its audio features documentation.

Troubleshooting

The speaker does not appear

  1. Confirm that the speaker is in pairing mode rather than merely switched on.
  2. Disconnect it from the phone or tablet it normally uses.
  3. Move it close to the TV or transmitter.
  4. Delete old pairings from the TV or transmitter.
  5. Restart the speaker, TV, transmitter and Xbox.
  6. Pair through the TV or transmitter, not the Xbox, unless the device is explicitly Xbox-compatible.

The speaker pairs but there is no sound

  1. Select the Bluetooth speaker as the TV’s active output.
  2. Set the Xbox to Stereo uncompressed.
  3. Set the TV’s digital output to PCM.
  4. Check the speaker’s volume and mute state.
  5. Try another TV audio output.
  6. Temporarily disconnect HDMI ARC/eARC equipment if the TV is prioritizing another audio system.
  7. Test audio from a TV app. If the app is also silent, the problem is likely the TV pairing or transmitter rather than the Xbox.

The audio cuts out

Reduce the distance between the speaker and transmitter, remove nearby competing Bluetooth devices, charge the speaker fully and test it with another source. If you are using a transmitter, check that it is in transmit mode rather than receive mode and that it is not trying to maintain too many connections.

The audio is delayed

Bluetooth can introduce noticeable latency between an on-screen action and its sound. The delay is especially distracting in competitive shooters, rhythm games, fighting games, racing games and games that require precise parries or timing.

Look for Audio Sync, AV Sync or Bluetooth Delay controls on the TV. You can also disable virtual surround and other processing. A low-latency codec may help, but both the transmitter and speaker must support the same codec, and “low latency” does not mean zero delay.

For timing-sensitive gaming, wired speakers, a soundbar connected through HDMI ARC/eARC or an Xbox-compatible wireless headset will generally be more dependable.

Surround sound or Atmos stopped working

That is expected when changing from a multichannel setup to one Bluetooth speaker. Select stereo or PCM. Advanced formats require compatible equipment throughout the complete signal path.

Party chat does not work

Treat a Bluetooth speaker as an output-only device. A speaker’s built-in microphone should not be assumed to work with Xbox party chat, and TV-routed audio can complicate chat mixing. For two-way chat, use a compatible Xbox headset. See Microsoft’s guidance for connecting a compatible headset and troubleshooting headset chat.

Can the Xbox controller connect to the speaker?

Do not treat the controller as a Bluetooth-speaker bridge. Its 3.5mm jack is intended for compatible headphones and headsets. A powered speaker with a suitable analog input might work in some physical configurations, but the controller does not convert that analog signal into Bluetooth, and a passive Bluetooth speaker cannot be powered through the controller.

TV Bluetooth, a TV audio output with a transmitter, an HDMI extractor or wired speakers are cleaner solutions.

Which setup is best?

Setup Best for Main advantages Trade-offs
TV Bluetooth A TV with Bluetooth audio output Fewest cables and extra devices Possible latency; TV may disable its own speakers
TV output plus transmitter A TV with 3.5mm or optical output Works without built-in TV Bluetooth Requires compatible input, codec and power
HDMI extractor plus transmitter A monitor or TV with no usable audio output Separates Xbox audio from HDMI video More cables and possible 4K/120Hz, HDR or VRR limitations
Wired speakers or soundbar Low latency and reliability Usually fewer pairing problems Requires cable routing
Xbox-compatible headset Party chat and competitive play Designed for Xbox audio and microphone use Not room-filling speaker audio

What about a monitor?

A monitor may accept HDMI video but provide no Bluetooth audio output, speakers or headphone jack. First check the monitor’s audio menu and ports. If it has a headphone or line output, connect a transmitter there. If it has no audio output, use an HDMI audio extractor and check its support for your resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR and ALLM settings.

Bottom line

A normal Bluetooth speaker usually cannot pair directly with an Xbox Series S. Pair it with the TV if the TV supports Bluetooth audio. Otherwise, use a Bluetooth transmitter connected to the TV’s 3.5mm or optical output, or use an HDMI audio extractor when the display has no usable audio connection. Set the Xbox and TV to stereo PCM when troubleshooting, and choose wired speakers or an Xbox-compatible headset if latency or party chat matters.
