LT on PS5 means L2. LT stands for “Left Trigger,” the Xbox-style name for the lower-left trigger on a controller. On a standard PS5 DualSense, that same control is labeled L2.
Where is L2 on a PS5 controller?
Hold the DualSense normally and look at the top-left rear edge. The upper button is L1; the larger trigger directly beneath it is L2. That lower-left trigger is the PS5 equivalent of LT.
So if a guide says “press LT,” press L2. If it says “hold LT,” keep L2 pressed. “Release LT” means let go of L2.
Xbox-to-PS5 controller mapping
| Xbox or PC term | PS5 equivalent |
|---|---|
| LT — Left Trigger | L2 |
| LB — Left Bumper | L1 |
| RT — Right Trigger | R2 |
| RB — Right Bumper | R1 |
| LS — Left Stick press | L3 |
| RS — Right Stick press | R3 |
The important distinction is LT → L2, not L1. LT is the lower trigger, while LB is the upper left shoulder button. Sony’s controller diagram identifies these controls as L1 and L2 separately: DualSense controller part names.

What does L2 do in PS5 games?
L2 has no universal gameplay function. The game assigns the action, which may include:
- Aiming or entering an alternate targeting mode
- Braking or reversing in a driving game
- Blocking, guarding, or focusing
- Using a secondary weapon or ability
- Zooming or interacting with an object
These are examples rather than fixed rules. If you want to confirm the exact action, open the game’s Controls or Controller Layout menu. PlayStation describes L1 and L2 as gameplay controls whose functions depend on the software: PS5 button functions.

Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Does pressing LT mean tapping or holding L2?
It depends on the wording. “Press LT” usually means press L2 once, while “hold LT” means keep L2 depressed. If the instruction says to pull LT halfway or gradually, the game may be using the trigger’s analog range. Racing games commonly use different amounts of trigger pressure for actions such as acceleration or braking.
In compatible PS5 games, L2 can also produce adaptive trigger resistance. That resistance is a programmed effect, not a separate control or necessarily a fault. Sony explains that adaptive triggers are built into L2 and R2 and can be configured by supported games: PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ.

Why is a PS5 game showing an LT prompt?
A game or guide may use Xbox-oriented terminology because it is cross-platform, written for PC, using a generic control scheme, or displaying prompts based on a detected controller or device. An LT prompt does not automatically mean your DualSense is unsupported.
Use the functional translation: LT is L2. This can also apply when a DualSense is used with a PC, mobile device, or Remote Play, although labels and feature support can vary by device and software: PlayStation support for using DualSense controllers with other devices.

What if L2 does not work?
- Check that the instruction says LT, not LB. LT is L2; LB is L1.
- Check whether the action requires holding L2 rather than tapping it.
- Make sure the required gameplay condition is active—for example, aiming, driving, swimming, or standing near an object.
- Open the game’s controller settings and check for a custom layout or remapping.
- Test L2 in another game if you suspect a controller problem.
- Reconnect or reset the controller if L2 is not detected anywhere.
Does the DualSense Edge use LT or L2?
The mapping is still LT → L2 on the DualSense Edge. The Edge adds profiles, remapping, sensitivity options, and trigger-stop settings, but its native left trigger remains L2. A short or medium trigger stop changes the trigger’s travel and can disable trigger effects; it does not rename the control or inherently remap it. See Sony’s DualSense Edge customization guide.
PlayStation-layout third-party controllers generally follow the same L1/L2 and R1/R2 arrangement, but labels, programmable mappings, and features can differ. If the printed label is unclear, identify the left analog trigger beneath the left shoulder button.
