Short answer: Nvidia says Nintendo Switch 2 delivers “10x the graphics performance” of the original Switch, but it has not published the benchmark, workload, settings, or formula behind that number. Treat it as an official vendor claim describing a major generational graphics upgrade—not as a promise that every game runs at 10 times the frame rate, resolution, or visual quality.
What Nvidia actually claimed
In an April 3, 2025 article, Nvidia said Switch 2 provides “10x the graphics performance” of the original Nintendo Switch.

Nvidia made the statement while highlighting Switch 2’s custom processor, dedicated ray-tracing hardware, Tensor Cores, DLSS, sharper visuals, smoother gameplay, and up-to-4K TV output. However, it did not identify the benchmark or explain whether “10x” refers to shader throughput, theoretical compute, ray-tracing performance, AI processing, a particular game-engine workload, or an internal composite test.
That missing methodology is the central qualification. The most defensible interpretation is that Nvidia claims Switch 2’s graphics hardware is roughly an order of magnitude more capable than the original Switch under an unspecified comparison. The number is not a universal performance conversion.

What Nintendo confirms about Switch 2
Nintendo’s official specifications confirm a custom Nvidia processor with substantially improved CPU and GPU performance. The system launched in the United States on June 5, 2025, with a $449.99 MSRP. Nintendo also announced a $499.99 Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle.
- 7.9-inch, 1920×1080 LCD handheld display
- HDR10 support
- Variable refresh rate support up to 120Hz in handheld mode

See Nintendo’s technical announcement and its U.S. launch information for the official details. Nintendo does not present the Nvidia “10x” figure as a defined technical specification in those materials.
Why “10x graphics performance” does not mean 10x frame rates
“Graphics performance” can describe several different capabilities:
- Rasterization and shader throughput
- Texture and pixel fill rate
- Memory bandwidth
- Ray-tracing throughput
- Tensor-Core or AI-processing performance
- A specific game-engine workload
- A composite benchmark chosen by the manufacturer
These measurements are not interchangeable. A tenfold improvement in one workload does not mean ten times the frame rate in every game.
Frame rate also depends on CPU performance, game-engine design, memory behavior, thermal limits, dynamic resolution, developer optimization, visual settings, and frame-rate caps. A game may use the extra GPU capacity for better lighting, denser environments, higher-quality effects, or more stable performance rather than simply producing ten times as many frames.
Nor does a 120Hz-capable handheld display guarantee 120 frames per second. The game must support that frame rate and sustain it under its chosen settings.
DLSS, 4K output, and native resolution
Nvidia says Switch 2 supports DLSS, its AI-assisted image-reconstruction technology. DLSS can allow a game to render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a sharper image for display. This can reduce the amount of work required to produce a high-resolution output, particularly in TV mode.
That distinction matters: up to 4K output is not the same as native 4K rendering. A console can send a 4K signal containing an image reconstructed from a lower internal resolution. Whether a game uses DLSS, what internal resolution it chooses, and how good the reconstruction looks are decisions made by the game and its developer.

What ray tracing adds
Nvidia says Switch 2 includes dedicated RT Cores. Ray tracing can improve reflections, shadows, lighting, ambient occlusion, and certain global-illumination effects.

Ray tracing is computationally expensive, however. Its presence does not establish a particular performance level, guarantee that every game uses it, or prove that Switch 2 matches a desktop gaming PC. Developers may enable different effects—or disable them entirely—in handheld mode, TV mode, or performance-focused settings.
What players may notice in actual games
The practical benefit of the hardware depends heavily on the software category.
New Switch 2 games
Games designed for the new system can build around its stronger CPU and GPU from the start. Nintendo points to Mario Kart World, with up to 24 racers, a large interconnected environment, and up to four-player local split-screen, as an example of the experiences enabled by the platform. Donkey Kong Bananza uses large destructible environments and supports two-player cooperation.
These features demonstrate the type of scale and complexity Switch 2 can target, but they are not themselves a standardized proof of Nvidia’s 10x figure.
Switch 2 Editions and patches
Some existing games receive Switch 2 Editions or updates that can improve resolution, frame rate, visual effects, or other features. The gains are title-specific. A patch may use the extra hardware for sharper output, steadier performance, better textures, or effects that were not practical on the original system.
Backward-compatible original Switch games
Original Switch software does not automatically receive a tenfold upgrade. A game may run through backward compatibility with no enhancement, receive a free update, or have a paid Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo maintains a compatibility document identifying original Switch games that may have specific issues on Switch 2.

Third-party ports
Third-party results depend on the developer’s port, engine, settings, and patch support. A more capable console gives developers more headroom, but it cannot guarantee that every port is well optimized.
What the “10x” claim does not prove
- Every game runs at 10 times the frame rate.
- Every game renders natively at 4K.
- Switch 2 is equivalent to a current desktop gaming PC or a specific GeForce GPU.
- All original Switch games automatically receive a major enhancement.
- The number represents a confirmed GPU-compute or teraflop multiplier.
- Every game supports 120fps.
- Switch 2 matches the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or any other console without a common benchmark.
Nvidia has not publicly specified the benchmark, game or workload, operating mode, comparison settings, DLSS status, or whether the figure includes Tensor-Core and ray-tracing workloads. Exact chip specifications should not be inferred from the statement alone.
Is Switch 2 worth upgrading for its graphics?
For a new buyer
Switch 2 is Nintendo’s current platform and offers substantially stronger graphics hardware, new exclusives, improved versions of selected games, HDR10, and higher-resolution TV output. The $449.99 U.S. launch MSRP is a significant purchase, so the value depends on how much you want its exclusive software and enhanced versions.
For an original Switch owner
The upgrade is most compelling if you want Switch 2-exclusive games, improved performance in demanding titles, better handheld image quality, or a more capable TV experience. It is less compelling if your existing library already satisfies you and you do not need the new software.

For handheld players
The handheld screen is 1080p, so the most visible improvements may be steadier frame rates, fewer dynamic-resolution drops, better effects, improved image reconstruction, and higher-quality textures or filtering. The 4K benefit primarily concerns docked TV play.
For TV-focused players
DLSS and up-to-4K output make Switch 2 more relevant for large-screen gaming, but the result varies by title. Do not assume that a 4K output setting means the game is rendered natively at 3840×2160.
For performance enthusiasts
The new hardware is clearly a major step beyond the 2017 Switch, but the official evidence is not detailed enough to convert “10x” into a precise GPU comparison. Wait for game-specific performance information rather than treating the headline as a benchmark.

The system’s U.S. launch MSRP was $449.99. Nintendo also announced the $499.99 Choose Your Game Bundle in 2026, including a download code for one of selected games such as Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, or Pokémon Pokopia, subject to availability and retailer terms.
Mario Kart World carries a $79.99 U.S. MSRP on Nintendo’s store. Other game and accessory prices can change, so check the specific product page before buying.
Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expanded storage. Nintendo’s support guidance should be checked before purchasing a card; ordinary legacy microSD cards should not be treated as a universal replacement for Switch 2 storage.
Accessories are use-case purchases, not performance upgrades. A Pro Controller can make long TV sessions more comfortable, a camera is relevant to compatible GameChat or CameraPlay features, and extra Joy-Con 2 controllers help with local multiplayer. Online features such as GameChat may require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online where applicable.
The bottom line on Nvidia’s 10x claim
Nvidia really did say Switch 2 has “10x the graphics performance” of the original Switch. The claim is plausible as a broad description of a large generational leap: Switch 2 uses a newer custom Nvidia design with dedicated RT Cores, Tensor Cores, and DLSS-related capabilities that the original system lacks.

But Nvidia has not defined what the tenfold figure measures. Until it supplies a benchmark and testing conditions, the number should not be used to predict tenfold frame rates, native 4K rendering, 120fps gameplay, or identical improvements in every Switch game. The useful conclusion is simpler: Switch 2 has substantially more graphics capability, while the benefit players see depends on the game, mode, resolution target, and developer implementation.
