If other apps have sound, start with Windows Volume mixer and the affected game’s audio settings. If nothing has sound, start with the selected output device, headset or speaker connection, Windows audio services, and drivers. Steam launches games, but it does not provide one universal sound setting: audio can be controlled by Windows, the game, your hardware, or Steam Link.
First, identify where the sound is missing
Play a YouTube video or Windows notification, then classify the problem:
- One Steam game: Check that game’s settings, Windows mixer entry, and installation files.
- Every Steam game: Check Windows routing, audio services, enhancements, and drivers.
- Steam’s interface or store trailers: Check Steam and Steam Client WebHelper in the Windows mixer.
- The entire computer: Start with the physical connection, output device, and driver.
- Steam Link or Remote Play: Check the host’s audio and Steam Link’s speaker configuration separately.
This distinction prevents you from verifying game files when Windows is sending audio to the wrong headset, monitor, or television.
Try these quick fixes first
1. Check the hardware
- Confirm the headset or speakers are powered on and that a physical mute switch, inline control, monitor, television, amplifier, or DAC is not muted.
- Reseat a 3.5-mm, USB, HDMI, or DisplayPort connection.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth and USB audio devices temporarily.
- If possible, test the headset or speakers on another device.
Connecting a second monitor or television can make HDMI or DisplayPort audio the new default. Bluetooth headsets can also expose different playback profiles, particularly when their microphone is active.

2. Select the correct Windows output
On Windows 11, select the speaker icon on the taskbar, select the arrow beside the volume control, and choose the intended headset, speakers, monitor, or television. You can also open Settings > System > Sound, select the device under Output, and confirm that it is not muted.
Windows 10 uses a different layout, but the task is the same: select the correct playback device and make it the default output. Microsoft’s current audio guidance covers output selection and common hardware and driver causes at Microsoft Support.
3. Check Volume mixer while the game is running
- Launch the affected game and reach its menu or gameplay.
- Press Alt+Tab.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the game and make sure its volume is raised and not muted.
- Set its Output device to the same headset or speakers you selected above.
- Check Steam and, if listed, Steam Client WebHelper.
- If routing looks wrong, use Windows’ option to reset app volumes and devices to the recommended defaults, then relaunch the game.
Windows allows an individual game to use a different output from the system default. The game should appear in the mixer after it generates audio. If it does not, trigger a sound, check for a separate launcher or anti-cheat process, and restart the game after changing the device. See Microsoft’s per-app audio troubleshooting guidance.
4. Check the game’s own Audio menu
Open the title’s Settings, Options, or Audio menu and inspect:
- Master, effects, music, dialogue, and voice-chat volume
- Mute-all or audio-disabled controls
- Output-device selection, if available
- Speaker configuration such as Headphones, Stereo, 5.1, or 7.1
- Surround, spatial-audio, dynamic-range, or night-mode settings
- A separate voice-chat output
Menu names differ by game. A title can be silent even when Steam and Windows are working normally.

Fix sound in one Steam game
Verify the game’s files
Use file verification when only one title is affected, the problem began after an interrupted update or mod installation, or the game also has missing content or crashes.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game, or select the gear icon on its library page.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish and relaunch the game.
Steam says verification can take several minutes, and files may fail validation because local configuration files are not necessarily replaced. Verification can repair missing or corrupted game files, but it cannot fix a muted Windows mixer entry, wrong HDMI or Bluetooth routing, faulty hardware, an incompatible driver, or a game-wide bug. The current Steam procedure is documented here.
If you use mods or a third-party launcher, test the unmodified game and inspect both the launcher and game process in Volume mixer. If only that title remains silent after verification, look for a game update, known issue, or developer support channel.

Fix sound in every Steam game
Restart Windows audio services
When browsers and system sounds work but games remain silent, restart the audio services:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
- Restart Windows Audio Endpoint Builder as well.
- Relaunch the game.
This is a temporary diagnostic step. If the problem returns after every reboot or device change, investigate drivers, Bluetooth behavior, vendor audio utilities, or recent Windows updates.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Disable enhancements and spatial effects temporarily
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the active output device.
- Temporarily turn off Audio enhancements.
- Temporarily turn off Spatial sound.
- Close or disable virtual-surround processing in your headset, motherboard, or sound-card utility.
- Relaunch the game.
Use ordinary stereo as a diagnostic baseline. Do not assume stereo is the best permanent setting for every speaker system. Steam notes that proprietary audio utilities can interfere with surround recognition in some Source games; its guidance is available here.
Update, roll back, or reinstall the audio driver
Investigate the driver when no applications have sound, the output device is missing, several games fail, or the problem began immediately after an update.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the problem started after an update, consider rolling back the driver or installing the version supplied by your PC, motherboard, headset, DAC, or sound-card manufacturer. Prefer Windows Update or the official manufacturer; avoid generic driver-updater software. A driver can be current yet incompatible with a particular device or Windows build.
Fix distorted, crackling, or intermittent audio
For crackling, dropouts, or audio that works only intermittently, test these changes one at a time:
- Disable Windows audio enhancements and spatial sound.
- Disable the vendor utility’s virtual surround or effects.
- Test with a different USB port or a wired headset.
- Disconnect Bluetooth and test the computer’s speakers or another headset.
- Close applications that control audio devices.
- Test exclusive mode and another sample format.
To disable exclusive mode, open Control Panel > Sound, open the Playback tab, double-click the active device, select Advanced, clear Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device, and apply the change.

(Turn up the mic volume and push the mute switch to “mic on” via the USB control box when testing the mic.)
On the same screen, test another available default format, such as 16-bit, 48,000 Hz or 24-bit, 48,000 Hz. These are reversible diagnostic tests, not universal requirements. Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting recommends testing exclusive mode and another sample format for some Steam-game failures; the exact choices depend on the device and driver.
Steam Link and Remote Play audio
These steps apply when the game is streaming to a television, phone, tablet, or Steam Link device—not when you are playing locally on the PC.
- Confirm that the game has sound on the host PC.
- Check the host’s Windows playback device and Volume mixer.
- In Steam Link, open Settings > Audio.
- Set Speaker Configuration to Stereo as a diagnostic test.
- Check the game’s own audio settings.
- Test without surround or virtual-audio processing.
- Restart both the host and client if the stream remains silent.
Steam specifically recommends testing Stereo for some speaker-configuration problems and advises checking host playback-device preferences and audio drivers. See the relevant Steam Link audio guidance.
Advanced checks for surround and audio conflicts
Some games expect stereo while others expose their own 5.1 or 7.1 controls. First set the Windows device and game to a simple stereo configuration, then add surround processing back after audio works.

What not to do first
- Do not reinstall Steam immediately. It is unlikely to repair Windows routing, a driver, or a defective headset.
- Do not verify files for every case. It helps with one damaged installation, not system-wide audio failure.
- Do not install generic driver-updater software.
- Do not change registry values without a title-specific reason and reliable documentation.
- Do not assume “Steam is causing it.” Steam may launch the process while Windows, the game, hardware, or a streaming configuration controls the audio.
- Do not routinely run Steam as administrator. It can introduce permission and device-routing differences; use it only when a game developer specifically requires it.
When the issue is probably game-specific
Contact the developer when only one game remains silent after checking its settings and verifying files, especially if the problem began after a game update, occurs only during gameplay, involves a separate launcher, or appears only with a particular mod, language pack, or DLC.
Include the game title and version, Windows version, audio device, whether other apps work, when the problem began, whether mods or a third-party launcher are installed, and the result of file verification. Steam’s support material notes that title-specific configurations and third-party games may require developer assistance; see Steam Support.
Platform note
This guide is Windows-first. Windows 11 paths and driver procedures do not transfer directly to macOS, Linux, or SteamOS. Proton and Wine audio problems may involve PipeWire, PulseAudio, compatibility settings, or a particular Proton version. Steam Deck Game Mode and Desktop Mode also expose different controls, and Steam Link streaming remains separate from local Deck audio.
