If Steam says a game is still running after its window has disappeared, close the game process first—not Steam. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, find the game or its launcher in Task Manager, choose End task, then fully exit and reopen Steam. If the process cannot be ended or Steam still shows Running, restart Windows.

This usually happens after a crash, failed launch, improper shutdown, or a launcher or anti-cheat process remaining active. It is not necessarily a Steam bug: the game, a publisher launcher, an anti-cheat component, or another Windows user session may still be involved.

The 30-second fix

  1. Try to return to the game with Alt + Tab and use its normal Quit or Exit to Desktop command. If it is frozen, try Alt + F4.
  2. Wait briefly if the game may be saving or synchronizing.
  3. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  4. Under Processes, select the game and choose End task. Also close an associated publisher launcher if it is clearly tied to the game.
  5. If the game is not listed, open Task Manager’s Details tab and look for its executable.
  6. After the process has ended, choose Steam > Exit, reopen Steam, and try again.
  7. If Steam still reports that the game is running, restart Windows.

Ending a process can discard unsaved progress and interrupt a save, cloud upload, shader-cache write, or configuration update. Use the normal quit command first whenever it is available.

What “still running” actually means

There are several different states behind the same Steam message:

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
  • The game window is still visible: the application is genuinely open or frozen.
  • The window disappeared, but the process remains: the game may have crashed during shutdown or left a child process running.
  • A launcher or anti-cheat component remains: some games start several processes rather than one executable.
  • Steam’s status is stale: the process has ended, but Steam has not refreshed its running state.
  • The game is running in another Windows session: Valve notes that the title may already be open under another operating-system user account.

Therefore, do not repeatedly click Play or immediately delete game files. First identify which process is actually active.

Method 1: End the game in Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. If Task Manager opens in its compact view, select More details.
  3. On Processes, look for the game’s displayed name, a publisher launcher, an updater, or a clearly associated helper process.
  4. Right-click the game and choose End task.
  5. If the game is not visible, open Details and inspect executable names. Process names vary by title, so do not guess from a generic list.

End the game process first. Close Steam only afterward if Steam’s status remains stuck. Do not kill random Windows processes such as svchost.exe, csrss.exe, or winlogon.exe, and do not close every Steam process indiscriminately.

If End task reports access denied, run Task Manager with administrator privileges if your account permits it. You may also need to close a launcher or child process that immediately starts the game again. If the process is protected, unresponsive, or belongs to another user session, restarting Windows is safer than experimenting with unrelated processes.

Method 2: Force-close it from Command Prompt

Use this method only after normal closing and Task Manager have failed. Open Command Prompt as administrator and first list running processes:

tasklist

To narrow the results, replace the search text with a distinctive part of the game or launcher name:

tasklist | findstr /i "game launcher"

Once you have confirmed the executable name, terminate it and its child processes:

taskkill /f /im "GameName.exe" /t

Or target a specific process ID shown by tasklist or Task Manager:

  • /pid targets a process ID.

If Steam still says the game is running

  1. Confirm that the game, launcher, updater, and associated anti-cheat processes have ended.
  2. In Steam, select Steam > Exit, rather than merely closing the window.
  3. Reopen Steam and check the game again.
  4. If Steam will not exit, use Task Manager to close the Steam client processes only after the game process has been dealt with.
  5. Restart Windows if the status remains stuck.

If the game is absent from Task Manager but Steam blocks launching, uninstalling, or verifying it, check the Details tab, other Windows user sessions, and any publisher launcher. Sign out other users, switch to the account where the game was started, ask an administrator to end the process, or reboot the computer.

Verify the game files after the process is closed

If the problem returns or the game will not launch, verify its installation:

  1. Open Steam’s Library.
  2. Right-click the game and choose Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files.
  4. Choose Verify integrity of game files.

Steam compares the installation with the game’s manifest and may replace or redownload damaged files. The exact labels can vary slightly between Steam client versions. This procedure is described in the current Steam troubleshooting path used by SEGA’s Steam support guide.

Verification does not necessarily repair broken mods, user configuration files, a third-party launcher, antivirus quarantine, missing runtimes, cloud-save conflicts, drivers, or a process that is still running. A modded installation may also have modified files replaced, so check the mod manager’s repair instructions first.

Be careful with Steam Cloud after a crash

After a forced shutdown, Steam may still be synchronizing or may show a cloud conflict when you relaunch the game. Stop and compare the local and cloud timestamps before choosing which version to keep. Do not delete local saves or disable Steam Cloud as a first-line fix.

Steam Cloud can store saves, settings, profile statistics, and other game data, but support and behavior depend on how each game implements it. Valve explains the limitations in its Steam Cloud support page and Steamworks Cloud documentation.

Why the game keeps getting stuck

A one-time crash usually needs only process cleanup. If the same game fails repeatedly, investigate the cause instead of repeatedly force-closing it:

  1. Update Steam, Windows, and your graphics driver.
  2. Disable overlays temporarily, including Discord, recording tools, GPU overlays, and hardware-monitoring utilities.
  3. Close mod managers and remove or update incompatible mods.
  4. Check the publisher launcher’s repair or update options.
  5. Test whether antivirus, endpoint security, a firewall, VPN, or network-filtering software is interfering. Follow the security vendor’s instructions for temporary exclusions, then restore protection immediately.
  6. Check the game’s system requirements and official support page.
  7. For anti-cheat games, follow the publisher’s instructions. Do not delete or manually modify anti-cheat files unless the publisher specifically tells you to.

Valve’s general launch troubleshooting guidance recommends updates, driver checks, file verification, disabling non-essential software, and checking system requirements. Publishers also identify overlays and security software as possible sources of interference, but none is a universal cause.

When a launcher or anti-cheat is responsible

Some games involve the Steam client, a publisher launcher, an updater, an anti-cheat bootstrapper, a crash reporter, and a game helper. If the game immediately reappears after you end it, one of those components may be restarting it.

Process names vary and can change after updates. Search the game developer’s official support documentation for the exact launcher or anti-cheat process rather than relying on a universal list. Close only processes you can confidently associate with the affected game.

Platform-specific fixes

Windows 10 and 11

The Task Manager and tasklist/taskkill procedures above apply to Windows. Use normal closing first, then Task Manager, then Command Prompt, and finally a Windows restart if necessary.

Steam Deck and Linux

Do not run the Windows commands above as though they were universal. Use the Steam Deck’s system monitor or a Linux process tool to identify and stop the game, launcher, or Proton process. Proton and compatibility layers can add another process layer, so check Valve’s platform-specific troubleshooting guidance and the game’s support page.

macOS

Use Force Quit for a frozen application or open Activity Monitor to locate and stop the game or launcher. Windows’ taskkill command does not apply to macOS.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

When to contact support

Contact the game developer or publisher when the issue affects one title, especially after a patch or when a separate launcher, anti-cheat system, or mod is involved. Include the game version, operating system, launcher, recent crash details, and the process name if you identified one.

Contact Steam Support when several games or the Steam client show the same behavior. Reinstalling the game should come only after process cleanup, file verification, updates, and conflict testing. Reinstalling Steam is a last resort: confirm save backups first and understand that Steam library files and saved data require separate precautions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Steam say a game is running when it is closed?

The game may have crashed without ending its process, or a launcher, anti-cheat component, or child process may still be active. Steam can also display a stale status or detect the game in another Windows user session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will ending the task delete my save?

It should not normally delete an existing save, but it can lose unsaved progress or interrupt a save and cloud synchronization. Use the game’s normal quit command first and review any Steam Cloud conflict carefully.

Why does the game restart after I end it?

A publisher launcher, updater, watchdog, or anti-cheat component may be restarting it. Identify and close the associated process, then consult the game publisher’s official support instructions.

Is the fix different on Steam Deck?

Yes. Use the Deck’s system monitor or Linux process tools rather than Windows Task Manager and taskkill commands. Proton can also add another process layer.
