The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 offered the most gaming performance in this shortlist, while the Legion 5 was the lower-cost 1080p option.

These models are now legacy products; any current price, stock, condition, or warranty needs to be checked against the specific listing. 1. Best gaming performance: ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15
The cited Scar 15 pairs a Ryzen 7 5800H with an RTX 3080 and a 15.6-inch Full HD display running at 300Hz. With 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, it was the performance-first choice in the historical list; its approximate period price was around $2,400.

Choose it if you mainly play competitive games at 1080p and value GPU performance and high refresh rates over display resolution. Skip it if you want a high-resolution screen for reading, coding, or detailed creative work, or if its used price approaches that of a newer gaming laptop. A 300Hz panel is useful only when a game and the system can deliver very high frame rates; the refresh-rate number alone does not guarantee a better image or a meaningful advantage in every game.
The RTX 3080 makes this the strongest gaming configuration here, but laptop GPU performance varies with power limits and cooling. It is not equivalent to a desktop RTX 3080, and it cannot be expected to run every newer game at maximum settings. Check the exact GPU configuration and condition before buying.
2. Best 1600p display: Lenovo Legion 5 Pro
The Legion 5 Pro is the most balanced pick for someone who games and also spends hours working on the laptop. Its 16-inch, 16:10 display has a resolution of 2560×1600 and a 165Hz refresh rate, giving more vertical room than a conventional 16:9 screen. The cited configuration combines that panel with a Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3060, and 16GB of RAM. Choose it for a sharper, roomier screen that works well for documents, coding, timelines, and split-screen tasks as well as gaming. Skip it if you expect an RTX 3060 to drive every demanding game at native 1600p, high settings, and a high frame rate. Depending on the game, you may need to lower settings, use DLSS or resolution scaling, or render below native resolution. The panel’s 165Hz ceiling is most valuable when the GPU can produce enough frames to use it.

As with the other models, confirm the exact generation and configuration: the Legion 5 Pro name covers multiple SKUs. In particular, verify the GPU, display, memory arrangement, storage, and condition of a used unit.
3. Best 17-inch screen: ASUS ROG Strix G17
The original G17 recommendation pairs a Ryzen 7 5800H and RTX 3060 with a 17.3-inch 1920×1080/144Hz panel and 16GB of RAM; the approximate historical price was around $1,500. Its larger image is well suited to desk-based gaming, but the cited screen is Full HD rather than the Legion 5 Pro’s 2560×1600.
Choose it if screen size matters more than portability or pixel density. Skip it if you carry a laptop frequently, want more vertical workspace, or prefer a sharper panel. Bigger does not automatically mean better: a 16-inch 1600p display can show more detail and more content vertically, while a 17.3-inch Full HD screen gives a physically larger image.

The 2022 family specification lists the G17 at about 2.8kg before its power adapter, so plan for a bulky system.

Choose it if you want a more compact RTX 3060 laptop and do not need a 1600p display. Skip it if the listing does not clearly specify its panel, memory, storage, and GPU configuration. Omen 15 models vary by year and market, so check display brightness and color coverage as well as GPU power and whether RAM is installed in a suitable dual-channel configuration. Do not assume every machine bearing the Omen 15 name matches this recommendation.
5. Best lower-cost choice: Lenovo Legion 5
The historical budget configuration has a Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3050 Ti, 15.6-inch 1920×1080/120Hz panel, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. It was priced slightly above $1,000 in the period guide. That makes “budget” relative: this was a lower-cost gaming laptop, not an inexpensive basic notebook.

6. A worthwhile 2022 alternative: ASUS TUF Gaming A15
The TUF A15 deserves a place in a 2022-focused comparison even though it was absent from the original five. The reviewed configuration has a Ryzen 7 6800H, RTX 3060, 16GB dual-channel DDR5, 1TB SSD, and a 1440p/165Hz display. Tech Advisor reports a 100W RTX 3060 in its tested unit, along with strong mainstream gaming performance, reasonable fan noise, and sometimes impressive battery life away from games.
Consider it if a 2022-generation Ryzen platform, a high-resolution fast display, and 1TB storage matter more than premium fit and finish. Skip it if trackpad feel, speakers, build quality, or connectivity are priorities: those were among the review’s stated compromises. The review is for a particular configuration, not a guarantee that every TUF A15 SKU has the same GPU power limit, screen, memory, or storage.

Ryzen 7 is a tier, not a specific processor
Most of the original picks use the Ryzen 7 5800H, a 2021-era mobile processor; the TUF A15 and 2022 ROG family include Ryzen 7 6800H options. Both are performance-oriented H-series chips, but they belong to different generations and platforms. A Ryzen 7 U-series chip is typically designed around lower power and portability, while H/HS chips target higher-performance laptops and HX chips occupy a higher-power enthusiast tier. Do not compare laptops by the Ryzen 7 label alone: exact CPU, cooling, and sustained power behavior matter, and the graphics card usually has a greater effect on gaming performance.

For gaming, compare the GPU implementation—not just its name
In this shortlist, the rough graphics order is RTX 3080, then RTX 3060, then RTX 3050 Ti. The RTX 3060 is the middle-ground choice for 1080p and can be usable at 1440p or 1600p with suitable settings; the RTX 3050 Ti is better treated as a budget 1080p option. But a GPU model name does not fully describe performance. Laptop GPU wattage, cooling, fan mode, and system power limits affect results, and similarly named GPUs can behave differently across chassis. The TUF A15 review’s 100W RTX 3060 is one specific example, not a wattage figure for all RTX 3060 laptops. A MUX switch or Advanced Optimus can also affect how graphics are routed and performance in some circumstances.

These are laptop GPUs, not desktop cards with identical performance. VRAM also matters: the Legion 5’s RTX 3050 Ti has 4GB, which can be restrictive in newer games. Performance depends on the title, resolution, settings, drivers, and thermal condition; no model should be assumed to max out every game.
Choose resolution and screen size for the way you use the laptop
- 1080p: A sensible match for the RTX 3050 Ti and a less demanding target for high frame rates. It is also the resolution of the cited Scar 15, G17, and Omen configurations.
- 1440p or 1600p: Sharper, with more workspace. The Legion 5 Pro’s 2560×1600 panel is 16:10; the TUF A15 review’s 1440p panel is a different resolution and aspect-ratio configuration. Higher resolution costs GPU performance, so expect to tune settings in demanding games.
- Refresh rate: 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz, or 300Hz describes how often the display can refresh, not the frame rate the laptop will achieve. For general work, brightness, color coverage, and resolution may matter more than an extreme refresh rate.
- Physical size: A 17.3-inch display is bigger but makes the laptop less portable; it does not necessarily have more pixels than a 16-inch panel.
Check the exact SKU for brightness, color coverage, response behavior, resolution, and refresh rate. Listings for the same laptop family can contain different panels, and product photos do not reliably identify the specification.
Memory, storage, and upgradeability
For a gaming laptop from this generation, 16GB of RAM is a sensible baseline; confirm whether it is dual-channel and whether the memory can be upgraded. DDR5 is a newer platform feature in the Ryzen 7 6800H-era alternatives, not an automatic guarantee of a large real-world gaming advantage over DDR4. Storage is easier to judge: 512GB is workable but restrictive for a library of large games, while 1TB offers more breathing room. Check how many M.2 slots are available and whether the SSD is replaceable. Review coverage specifically notes replaceable RAM and SSD modules on the Legion 5 Pro.
Buying one in 2026: a used-laptop checklist
These are legacy 2021–2022 models. An attractive old list price does not establish what a machine is worth now, and no current inventory or 2026 price is asserted here. Before paying, compare the exact machine’s total cost with newer alternatives; if a newer laptop is similarly priced, its more recent GPU, warranty, and remaining support may make it the better purchase.
