To add a custom sound, use Discord on desktop or in a web browser, join a voice channel, open the Soundboard panel, and select Add Sound. You need the server’s Create Expressions permission and an open Soundboard slot. If the server is full, remove a sound or increase its capacity with Server Boosts.
Upload a custom sound
- Open Discord in the desktop app or a web browser. Discord’s current guide does not offer Soundboard uploads on mobile.
- Select the server and join a voice channel where Soundboard is available.
- Open the Soundboard panel using the Soundboard control in the voice-channel interface. Its icon or placement can vary between clients.
- Select Add Sound, choose an audio file, and follow the upload dialog to finish.
- Try the sound from the Soundboard panel to confirm it was added to the intended server.
Discord’s Soundboard guide describes the upload flow but does not provide a complete, text-listed set of file-format, duration, codec, or file-size requirements. Follow the limits shown in your current upload dialog rather than relying on specifications from older guides.
What permission do you need?
To upload a sound, you need the server’s Create Expressions permission. If Add Sound is missing, ask a server administrator to check your role and any permissions set for the target voice channel.

An administrator can grant the permission by opening Server Settings > Roles, selecting the relevant role, and enabling Create Expressions. Channel-specific permission overrides may also affect what you can do in a particular voice channel.

- Create Expressions: add sounds.
- Manage Expressions: edit or remove custom sounds.
- Use Soundboard: play sounds. This can be controlled by role or in a channel’s Edit Channel > Permissions settings.
How many sounds can a server hold?
Discord’s current server-cap documentation lists these Soundboard slot totals. Boost thresholds are from its Server Boosting FAQ.

These figures are reported in Discord’s account and server caps guide; server benefits can change, so check Discord’s current documentation if you are making a decision based on a particular slot total. Boosts are not required just to upload: they matter when the server needs capacity beyond its current limit.

If the server is at capacity, someone with Manage Expressions can remove an unused sound, or the server can reach a higher Soundboard limit through Server Boosting. Deleting a sound frees a slot; it does not raise the maximum. Nitro is not a substitute for the server’s slot limit.

Can you upload sounds from a phone?
No. Discord’s current Soundboard guide says uploading is available through the desktop app or browser, not the mobile app. Mobile users can play available Soundboard sounds, but to add one, switch to Discord on a computer. If you are on mobile and cannot find Add Sound, changing permissions will not make the mobile upload control appear.

Do you need Nitro?
No, not to add or use a sound within the server where it is available. Nitro’s Soundboard benefit is the ability to use sounds from other servers across servers. It does not increase the number of sounds stored in your server; that capacity is tied to the server’s Boost level. See Discord’s Nitro and Nitro Basic feature details for current plan information.
Manage or remove sounds
Open Server Settings > Soundboard to manage the server’s sounds. You need Manage Expressions to edit or remove custom sounds; Discord’s guide describes using the X beside a sound to remove it. If the server is full, removing an unwanted clip is the quickest way to make room for a replacement.

Troubleshoot missing uploads and playback

| The server has no free slots | Remove an unwanted sound if you have Manage Expressions, ask an administrator to remove one, or increase capacity through Server Boosting. |
| A sound is uploaded but you cannot hear it | Check that you are not deafened, that Use Soundboard is allowed, and that your Soundboard volume is not zero. Confirm the sound is in the server you expect. |
| The sound is too quiet | Check User Settings > Voice & Video > Soundboard > Soundboard Volume. A 0% setting means you will not hear Soundboard sounds. The sound’s source level may also be low. |
If permissions and capacity look correct but the control still does not appear, try Discord in a browser to rule out a client-specific display issue. Restart or update the desktop client after checking those more common causes.
Choose clips responsibly
Upload recordings you made or audio you have permission to use, and choose clips appropriate for the server. Discord makes uploaders responsible for following its Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and intellectual-property rules. A clip being short does not automatically make it permissible to use.

For playback troubleshooting, the Soundboard panel is also available through the Windows game overlay shortcut Ctrl + `, according to Discord’s guide.
