Usually, you do not need to install Java yourself to use the CurseForge app. For Minecraft: Java Edition, CurseForge can install and manage the Java runtime automatically. Java is still needed behind the scenes to run the game and its modpacks; browsing CurseForge or downloading a file does not require it.
Do you need Java for what you want to do?

“Java” can mean two different things
Minecraft: Java Edition is one edition of Minecraft. The Java runtime (also called the JVM) is software that runs Java programs, including Minecraft Java Edition and many modding tools. A “Java mod” usually means a mod made for Java Edition; it does not mean you need to know how to program in Java.
CurseForge is a desktop app for supported games, separate from the CurseForge website. You can download the CurseForge app and browse or download files from the website without Java. Downloading a mod is not the same as launching it: playing a modded Minecraft profile requires Java Edition and a compatible runtime.

How CurseForge handles Java for Minecraft
In the app’s Minecraft workflow, CurseForge can install Java automatically and can let you choose a Java executable if you need to override the selected one. That usually means a beginner can create and play a modpack profile without separately downloading Java first. It does not mean Java is absent: the runtime is still needed to run the game. CurseForge’s launch-issues guidance discusses Java as a requirement for running modpacks.
Automatic setup applies to the supported CurseForge Minecraft workflow. A failed runtime download, a custom Java path, an external launcher, or a manually launched installer can still require you to configure Java. The app is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with standalone and Overwolf downloads listed on the official download page. The standalone version is described there as lightweight; the Overwolf version includes additional in-game features. Neither choice changes the distinction between Java being required by the game and being something you must install manually.
What you need to install and play a modpack
- Minecraft: Java Edition access. CurseForge’s Minecraft mod workflow is not for Bedrock Edition. See Minecraft’s Java Edition system information.
- The CurseForge desktop app for its managed install-and-play workflow.
- A compatible Minecraft version and mod loader. A pack is built for particular versions; CurseForge’s normal profile flow filters or detects compatible combinations. Its modpack installation guide explains this process.
- A working launcher/account setup and enough storage and memory for the game and pack.
- A compatible Java runtime. CurseForge or the Minecraft launcher may provide it; you do not necessarily need a system-wide Java installation.
Install a modpack through CurseForge
- Download the desktop app from the official CurseForge page and install the Windows, macOS, or Linux version for your computer.
- Open CurseForge and select Minecraft. Sign in or link the relevant Minecraft installation if prompted.
- Use Browse to find a modpack, then select Install. CurseForge creates a profile and installs the compatible files and loader for that pack.
- Open the profile under My Modpacks and select Play. Allow CurseForge or the Minecraft launcher to install or use the Java runtime if prompted.
Interface labels may change. The key is to install and launch the profile through the app so it can manage the pack’s version and loader, rather than opening individual mod files.

When you may need to install or configure Java yourself
Manual loader installation
If you install Forge or another loader outside CurseForge, its installer may be a .jar file that needs Java to run. CurseForge’s Forge installation guide distinguishes the manual process, which requires Java, from the app’s automated profile setup.

A third-party launcher may manage Java differently from CurseForge. A dedicated Minecraft server may also need a runtime configured for its server software and game version. In either case, follow the launcher’s or server’s requirements rather than assuming CurseForge’s automatic setup applies.
Runtime problems
If CurseForge cannot obtain its managed runtime, if the selected Java executable no longer exists, or if you intentionally use a custom setup, you may need to install a compatible runtime or select its executable in the app’s Minecraft settings. Avoid installing a random newer Java version as a first fix: compatibility with the Minecraft version and loader matters more than simply having the newest version.
Java versions depend on the Minecraft setup
There is no single Java version that suits every Minecraft release, loader, and launcher. CurseForge’s Forge guidance cites Java 17 for Minecraft versions in the 1.18-era and newer, but that is a version-qualified example, not a rule for every release. Older Minecraft setups can require older runtimes, and newer setups may use a newer one. Use the requirement for the specific pack or Minecraft version, and let CurseForge manage the runtime when using its normal workflow.

Fix common Java and launch errors
Check whether system Java is available
On Windows, open Command Prompt; on macOS or Linux, open Terminal, then run:

The command reports whether a system Java command is available and its version. If it fails, that does not by itself mean CurseForge cannot launch Minecraft: the app or Minecraft launcher may use a bundled runtime that the system command does not see. Likewise, a successful result does not prove the game is using that same Java executable.

Repair the profile and confirm its configuration
- Close Minecraft and CurseForge, then reopen the CurseForge app.
- For applicable modpack launch or installation issues, use Repair Installation in the app.
- Confirm the profile’s Minecraft version and mod loader match the modpack.
- Check the Java executable selected in Minecraft settings if you use a custom path or the error identifies Java.
- Try launching the unmodified profile. If the problem began after adding or updating mods, remove the recent changes and test again.
- Review
latest.logor the crash report for the first meaningful error. Log locations vary by operating system and installation.
Match the fix to the symptom
- “Java is not installed”: the managed runtime may not have downloaded correctly, a selected path may be invalid, or you may be launching a .jar installer outside the app.
- The app opens but the game does not: check the Minecraft version and loader, profile files, mod dependencies, available memory and disk space, and launcher/account configuration. Installing Java alone will not resolve every launch failure.
- Java is installed but the pack still fails: check whether that runtime is compatible with the pack’s Minecraft version and loader; “latest” is not automatically correct for every setup.

Bottom line
You do not usually need a separate Java download just to use CurseForge’s app for Minecraft modpacks. You do need Java to run Minecraft: Java Edition, and the app normally handles that runtime for you. Manual loaders, servers, custom launchers, and runtime errors can make Java installation or configuration your responsibility.
