Yes. You can move a compatible physical game card between Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, OLED Model, and compatible Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. Insert the card into the console where you want to play and launch the game from the HOME Menu. The card must be in the console playing it, and moving it does not move your save data.
How to share a physical Switch game card
- Close or suspend the game on the first console.
- Remove the game card and insert it into the second compatible console.
- On the HOME Menu, select the game icon.
- Install any required update or additional data, then play using a user profile on that console.
The consoles do not need to use the same Nintendo Account just to play a standard physical game card. Nintendo’s instructions for playing games across Switch-family consoles confirm that you insert the card into the console where you want to play.
Can two Switches play one cartridge at the same time?
No. A physical card can be in only one console at a time, so one cartridge does not provide two copies for simultaneous play. If two people want to play the same game on separate consoles at once, they need separate copies or licenses, unless the game supports a sharing feature such as Switch 2 GameShare for a suitable local session.

Does the cartridge carry your save data?
No. Save data is stored on the console, not on the game card. Lending or moving the cartridge lets another console run the game, but it does not give that console your progress, settings, or unlocks. The other player can use their own profile and save on that console.

To continue your own progress elsewhere, you can transfer save data between consoles; Nintendo says a transfer removes the save from the source console, so it is a move rather than a copy or merge. Alternatively, Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud lets members back up and download saves for supported games. Cloud support is title-dependent, and it is not a live shared-save system for every game.
Using Switch and Switch 2 game cards
Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical Nintendo Switch games, though compatibility and behavior can vary by title. Check Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information for a specific game.

A Switch 2 Edition is not the same as a Switch 2-exclusive game. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ explains the distinction. If a household still uses an original Switch, check the exact edition before buying or lending a card.
Physical cards, digital games, and virtual game cards
A physical card is straightforward to lend: hand it over, and the recipient inserts it. The trade-off is that the card cannot be in two consoles at once. Digital purchases use Nintendo’s virtual game card system instead, with account and console rules rather than a card to pass around.

Nintendo’s current North American guidance allows a Nintendo Account to pair up to two Switch-family consoles for virtual game cards. The owner can eject a card from one paired system and load it onto the other, but the same virtual game card cannot be loaded on both at once. Initial pairing and loading require the consoles and an internet connection. Nintendo also offers lending to eligible Nintendo Account family-group members for up to 14 days, subject to title and account restrictions. Some software is not eligible. Digital purchases do not move save data either. Saves remain tied to the console and user unless separately transferred or backed up. For more than two consoles, Nintendo’s online-license option may allow play on additional systems with internet checks, but it is not the same as having the virtual game card loaded. Policies and availability can vary by region.

How GameShare differs from lending a cartridge
GameShare is a separate Switch 2 feature for certain supported games. A Switch 2 can initiate a local share with another Switch 2 or an original Switch; an original Switch can receive a compatible share but cannot initiate one. It is not a universal way to duplicate a game license or a replacement for lending a cartridge. Check the game’s support and Nintendo’s compatibility guidance before relying on it.

- Taking turns: One card is generally enough; move it to the console being used.
- Playing at the same time: Get another copy or use an eligible, supported sharing option.
- Playing in different places: The card has to travel to the console using it, so separate access may be more practical.
- Continuing the same progress: Arrange a save transfer or supported cloud backup separately.
Common problems
- The game does not appear: Check that the card is fully inserted and compatible. If possible, test another card to help identify whether the issue is the game card or console.
- The game asks for a download: Some physical releases require additional software, an update, or a separate download. Packaging described as physical may be a game-key card or include a download code rather than the complete game on the card.
- DLC is missing: Add-on content may be licensed separately and may not be included on the base game card.
- The other console has no access to your save: That is expected. The card does not carry save data.
- A Switch 2 card will not work on an original Switch: It may be a Switch 2-exclusive game. A Switch 2 Edition, when supported, runs on original Switch as the Switch version without Switch 2 additions.
- A title has no cloud-save option: Not every game supports Save Data Cloud. Check the individual title rather than assuming a membership can back up every save.
