Yes. Every PS5 can connect to the internet over built-in Wi‑Fi or a wired Ethernet connection through the LAN port on the back of the console. Wi‑Fi needs no adapter; wired play needs a LAN cable and an available port on your router, gateway or network switch. Ethernet is often the steadier choice, but it does not guarantee faster downloads or eliminate lag.
Does the PS5 have Wi‑Fi?
Yes. Wi‑Fi is built into the PS5, so you do not need a USB wireless adapter. Sony lists support for IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax; 802.11ax is the standard associated with Wi‑Fi 6. The console can connect to a compatible wireless router or access point, including a hidden network set up manually. Sony’s PS5 specifications and its internet setup guide document these capabilities.
Wi‑Fi 6 is not required: the PS5 supports earlier listed Wi‑Fi standards too. To use Wi‑Fi 6 features, the router or access point must also support them, and the signal still depends on distance, obstructions and congestion. Sony identifies Multi-Link Operation (MLO) for the CFI-7000 model group when used with a compatible access point; that feature should not be assumed on every PS5 model. Sony’s current connection guidance specifies the model-group qualification.

Does the PS5 have an Ethernet port?
Yes. PS5 consoles, including the Digital Edition, have a LAN port on the rear. “Ethernet,” “wired internet” and “LAN cable” describe this connection method. The Digital Edition is not Wi‑Fi-only. Sony lists wired networking up to 1000BASE-T, or gigabit Ethernet; its safety documentation also lists 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX compatibility. For a direct wired connection, you need a compatible Ethernet/LAN cable and an available LAN port on a router or gateway. A standard network switch connected to the router can add ports if none are free; its job is to provide connections, not increase your internet speed.
How to connect a PS5 to Wi‑Fi
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Network, then Settings.
- Choose Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select your wireless network and enter its password.
Sony’s setup guide lists support for WPA, WPA2, WEP and WPA3 passwords, though the result can depend on the router’s configuration. If the network name (SSID) is hidden or does not appear, choose Set Up Manually and enter the network details. If your access point supports WPS, you can instead choose Set Up Using WPS Button. The exact setup options are in Sony’s internet connection instructions.

How to connect a PS5 with Ethernet
- Plug one end of an Ethernet/LAN cable into the LAN port on the back of the PS5.
- Plug the other end into a LAN port on your router, modem-router/gateway or network switch connected to the router.
- On the console, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Set Up Wired LAN, then Connect.
- To verify the connection, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.

Ethernet or Wi‑Fi: which is better for PS5 gaming?
Choose Ethernet when a cable can reach safely and you want to reduce the effect of wireless interference or fluctuating signal strength. It is often the more consistent option for online multiplayer and downloads, especially in a busy Wi‑Fi home. Choose Wi‑Fi when running a cable is impractical and the signal where the console sits is strong and reliable.

Ethernet does not raise the maximum speed of your internet plan, and neither connection guarantees low latency. Broadband performance, router and network conditions, the game’s servers and other parts of the connection all matter. Sony notes that the internet connection’s speed affects performance regardless of whether the console is wired or wireless. Sony’s connection guidance recommends a wired connection when possible for some troubleshooting, rather than promising that it will always be faster.
Router, modem and switch: where should the cable go?
Connect the PS5 to a LAN port on your home router or gateway. A modem-router (often called a gateway) combines modem and router functions and typically provides local Ethernet and Wi‑Fi connections. A standalone modem may not provide those local-network functions, so the right arrangement depends on your ISP equipment and service.

If you need more wired ports, connect a switch to the router, then connect the PS5 to the switch: router LAN port → switch → PS5. A switch adds connections; it does not increase the broadband speed. Mesh Wi‑Fi or an additional access point may help if the console is far from the main router, though results depend on placement and the mesh backhaul. Powerline adapters and MoCA over suitable coaxial wiring are other home-network options, but neither is a PS5-specific feature and results depend on the home’s wiring and equipment.

What to try if the PS5 will not connect
If the Wi‑Fi network is missing or the password fails
- Confirm the network is active and check the SSID and password.
- Move the PS5 closer to the router and reduce obstructions or sources of interference.
- Use Set Up Manually for a hidden network, or try the WPS option if the access point supports it.
- Check the router’s wireless-security configuration, then restart the router and PS5 if needed.
Sony lists manual setup and WPS options in its connection guide and recommends addressing signal interference in its PS5 connection-error guidance.
If Ethernet is plugged in but the PS5 is offline
- Reseat the cable at both ends and try another LAN port on the router or switch.
- Try another Ethernet cable, then restart the router and console.
- Check whether other devices can access the internet through the same router.
- Run the PS5 connection test and check PlayStation service status before changing advanced router settings.
If the test passes but a game or online feature still fails
A successful internet test confirms basic connectivity; it does not guarantee that a particular game, PlayStation service, NAT configuration, voice-chat feature or Remote Play session is working. Check the service or game status and the router/ISP setup. Avoid port forwarding as a first step: Sony lists particular ports only in a specific error-troubleshooting workflow and directs users who need help opening them to their ISP. Sony’s error guidance covers that case.
If the network is IPv6-only
PS5 supports IPv6 but not an IPv6-only network. The router must also provide IPv4. This limitation is listed in Sony’s connection support information.

Usually, no new router is needed just because you own a PS5. Built-in Wi‑Fi works without an accessory; wired play requires a LAN cable and an available port. Sony notes that LAN cables are sold separately in its data-transfer guidance. Consider a switch only if you have no free router LAN port. Consider a better-placed access point or mesh system only if coverage is the problem, and do not buy a Wi‑Fi 6 router solely because the PS5 supports 802.11ax: the router must help with an actual coverage, congestion or compatibility issue to make a difference.
For Remote Play, Sony lists at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps recommended for best performance. Those are Sony’s stated connection requirements, not a guarantee of quality; the remote device and network path matter too. Sony’s PS5 support page gives the Remote Play figures.
