If a game launch freezes only your external monitor on a KDE Plasma 6 laptop with hybrid graphics, KWin’s choice of DRM device may be involved. A reported workaround is to set KWIN_DRM_DEVICES so KWin prefers the GPU that best matches the display setup. It helped one AMD gaming laptop using a USB-C hub, but it is not a universal Plasma fix: identify your own GPUs and device paths before changing the setting.

First, identify what is actually freezing

A frozen external panel is not the same problem as a frozen game or a locked-up computer. Note what still responds when the fault occurs; that distinction determines what to test next.

  • Only the external monitor stops updating: If the laptop panel, audio, keyboard, or applications continue working, suspect the external display path, compositor, or GPU coordination before assuming the whole system has crashed.
  • The panel or desktop looks frozen but responds to input: A shortcut such as Super may cause the screen to refresh. In the reported case, pressing Super temporarily refreshed the external monitor. That suggests some desktop activity was still being processed, but does not by itself identify the cause.
  • The game freezes while the desktop remains usable: Compare windowed, borderless, and exclusive fullscreen modes. The game, graphics driver, compositor, refresh-rate features, or fullscreen interaction may be involved.
  • The display turns black or loses signal: Check the cable, dock, refresh rate, HDR, and display-link negotiation as well as the GPU path.
  • The whole graphical session or machine locks up: This is more serious than a panel that stops redrawing. After reboot, inspect the previous boot’s logs rather than treating the issue as a simple display refresh problem.

The original report described an external display freezing when a game started, with a temporary refresh after pressing Super. It involved an ASUS ROG Strix G513QY, a Ryzen 9 5980HX with integrated Radeon graphics, a Radeon RX 6800M, and a USB-C hub. The author also found a kernel message reading *ERROR* Failed to pin framebuffer with error -12. See the original solved report.

Why the GPU and display connection matter

A hybrid-graphics laptop has at least two graphics devices, but its screens and connectors are not necessarily wired the same way. The internal panel may use the integrated GPU, while an HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C output may be connected to the discrete GPU, the integrated GPU, or a dock’s USB graphics device. KWin must coordinate the rendering and display paths exposed by the hardware.

A USB-C hub adds another variable, but USB-C does not mean DisplayLink. A monitor can receive video through DisplayPort Alt Mode, possibly with MST through a dock, while DisplayLink uses a separate USB graphics path and driver. The original report establishes that a USB-C hub was present; it does not establish that the hub was defective or identify its video technology. KWin documents its DRM device selection environment variable in its environment-variable reference.

The framebuffer error is a useful clue, not a diagnosis. Error -12 conventionally indicates an allocation failure, but that message alone does not prove that physical VRAM or system RAM is exhausted. In the reported case, the hybrid-GPU arrangement, DRM error, and successful device-ordering change make a display-pipeline or framebuffer-allocation conflict plausible; the precise root cause was not established.

Record your session, versions, and GPU paths

Before editing configuration, collect a baseline. These commands report the current session and software versions:

echo "$XDG_SESSION_TYPE"
plasmashell --version
kwin_wayland --version 2>/dev/null || kwin_x11 --version 2>/dev/null
uname -a

Then enumerate graphics devices and their kernel drivers:

lspci -Dnnk | grep -A3 -Ei 'vga|3d|display'

Do not rely only on lspci | grep VGA: a second GPU may be listed as a 3D controller or Display controller, rather than VGA. To see the DRM card symlinks and the PCI addresses in their names, run:

ls -l /dev/dri/by-path/

Entries often resemble pci-0000:03:00.0-card. Those addresses are examples only; use the paths from your own machine. Match each PCI address to the GPU reported by lspci. You need this mapping before choosing an order for KWin.

Try KWin’s DRM-device preference carefully

KWIN_DRM_DEVICES is a real KWin variable for selecting DRM devices, not a generic game-launch option. In the reported setup, the discrete Radeon was listed first and the integrated Radeon second. The intended order was to prefer the first device and retain the second as another available device. Whether that order helps depends on which GPU drives the affected output; copying the original addresses blindly can make another system worse. KWin’s implementation history and documentation cover the variable.

  1. Back up the environment file:
    sudo cp -a /etc/environment /etc/environment.backup
  2. Edit it:
    sudoedit /etc/environment
  3. Add one line using your actual DRM paths. For example, if your own path listing really contains the two addresses below, the format is:
    KWIN_DRM_DEVICES="/dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000:03:00.0-card:/dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000:08:00.0-card"

In this example, the first entry is the preferred device. Substitute both paths and choose their order based on your hardware topology; the PCI addresses above are not universal. Keep the backslashes before the colons in this /etc/environment format, and do not add shell syntax such as export.

  4. Save the file and reboot:
    systemctl reboot

A fresh login may be sufficient on some systems, but a reboot ensures the display manager and Plasma session inherit the edited environment.

  5. Retest in stages: Start with the desktop idle, then try the same game in windowed, borderless, and fullscreen modes. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the GPU ordering or a display mode made a difference.

This is a global KWin preference, not a per-game setting. If the internal panel stops working, the external display behaves worse, or graphics performance or power use changes negatively, undo the setting or test the reverse device order only after confirming your paths.

Undo the change or recover from a login problem

To revert normally, remove the KWIN_DRM_DEVICES line from /etc/environment, or restore the backup and reboot:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo cp -a /etc/environment.backup /etc/environment
systemctl reboot

Restoring the backup also restores the file as it was before your edit, so preserve any other environment settings you have added since making that copy.

If Plasma will not start after the change, switch to a text console with Ctrl+Alt+F3 (or another available TTY), log in, and remove the KWin line:

sudoedit /etc/environment
systemctl reboot

Do not replace the whole file with just the KWin setting; keep its other contents intact.

If the monitor still freezes, isolate the display path

Use the same game and reproduce the same failure while changing one condition at a time. This helps separate GPU selection from a dock, display mode, session, or software-version issue.

Compare the dock with a direct connection

If the monitor is connected through a hub or dock, connect it directly to the laptop’s HDMI or DisplayPort output if possible. If direct video works but the docked connection does not, investigate the dock path: Alt Mode or MST behavior, DisplayLink software if applicable, dock firmware, cable, or bandwidth. That comparison does not, on its own, prove which component is at fault.

Test refresh rate, VRR, HDR, and fullscreen separately

In Plasma’s display settings, temporarily disable Adaptive Sync, Variable Refresh Rate, or the equivalent option, then retest. Test HDR off as a separate change, and lower the refresh rate if needed. If the failure occurs only in exclusive fullscreen, compare windowed and borderless modes before changing global compositor settings.

These are diagnostic variables, not universal fixes. KDE reported a Plasma 6.7.2 fix for a common KWin crash involving variable refresh rates and multi-monitor setups; that makes VRR worth isolating, but does not mean VRR causes every external-display freeze. A separate KDE Discuss report describes an NVIDIA/Wayland freeze associated with DisplayPort 1.4 or HDR, with DisplayPort 1.2 as a workaround at a lower refresh rate. That is a different hardware case, not proof about the original laptop. See the KDE Plasma fixes post and the separate DisplayPort/HDR report.

Compare Wayland and X11 if both are available

Check the current session with echo "$XDG_SESSION_TYPE". To compare, log out, select Plasma (X11) or Plasma (Wayland) from the login screen, and reproduce the same game, monitor, connection, and refresh rate. If only one session fails, that narrows the investigation but does not identify the defective component. KWin’s Wayland session directly manages the DRM display backend, making it a relevant place to investigate; similar symptoms can still arise from drivers, the kernel, or display hardware under X11.

X11 is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed cure. KDE’s known X11 issues include limitations involving mixed refresh rates, multi-GPU performance, compositor latency, HDR, and multi-screen behavior.

Update through your distribution

Install supported updates for Plasma, the kernel, and the relevant graphics stack through your distribution rather than mixing in upstream binaries without a specific reason. KDE’s June 2026 Plasma post lists a Plasma 6.7.1 fix for screens freezing on laptops with both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, as well as the Plasma 6.7.2 VRR/multi-monitor KWin fix. These are related fixes; they do not establish that either release resolves the exact USB-C-hub case from 2025. Whether a fix is available depends on your distribution’s packaging and release cadence.

If you use NVIDIA on Wayland, check KDE’s NVIDIA guidance for the relevant prerequisites: a Plasma release with explicit-sync support, compatible NVIDIA driver support, the NVIDIA EGL Wayland libraries, and DRM kernel modesetting (including nvidia_drm.modeset=1 where applicable). Follow your distribution’s instructions for verifying or enabling them.

Use logs to choose the next step

After reproducing the freeze, inspect the current boot’s kernel and user-session messages:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
journalctl -b -k | grep -Ei 'drm|amdgpu|nvidia|i915|framebuffer|gpu|error|fail'
journalctl --user -b | grep -Ei 'kwin|drm|wayland|framebuffer|error|fail'

If the whole machine hangs and you have to reboot, check the previous boot instead:

journalctl -b -1 -k | grep -Ei 'drm|amdgpu|nvidia|i915|framebuffer|gpu|error|fail'
journalctl --user -b -1 | grep -Ei 'kwin|drm|wayland|framebuffer|error|fail'

A DRM or framebuffer error near the time of the freeze supports investigating the graphics display path, but a log line is not conclusive proof of root cause. If only one GPU appears in your inventory, the multi-GPU ordering workaround is less likely to apply; concentrate on the dock or cable, display modes, driver, or game-specific behavior instead. If the connector uses DisplayLink, investigate its driver path separately from ordinary USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode.

Avoid trying unrelated KWin variables such as KWIN_DRM_DISABLE_TRIPLE_BUFFERING=1 or KWIN_DRM_NO_DIRECT_SCANOUT=1 as if they were equivalent fixes. KWin documents these as behavior controls or debugging options, not general-purpose gaming remedies. Changing several compositor settings together also makes it harder to tell what helped and can affect performance.

What to include in a useful KDE bug report

If the problem persists across these comparisons, report enough detail for others to distinguish a game issue from a display-pipeline failure. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • GPU models and the relevant lspci -Dnnk output.
  • Plasma, KWin, kernel, and graphics-driver versions; identify Mesa or NVIDIA where relevant.
  • Wayland or X11, plus whether the laptop panel and other applications remain responsive.
  • How the monitor is connected: direct HDMI/DisplayPort, USB-C Alt Mode, dock/MST, or DisplayLink if known.
  • Monitor refresh rate, HDR and VRR state, and whether the fault requires exclusive fullscreen.
  • The relevant kernel and user-session journal messages, including the time of reproduction.
  • Whether direct connection, a different session, or a different GPU ordering changes the result.

These details matter because the original 2025 report did not establish its session type, software versions, exact dock video technology, or whether HDR, VRR, and fullscreen affected reproduction. The fix is therefore best treated as a targeted workaround to test on matching hybrid-GPU systems, not a blanket answer for every Plasma gaming freeze.
