Verdict: The ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4090 OC is an exceptionally capable 4K gaming card with a cool, quiet, premium air cooler. Its factory overclock adds only a small amount of performance over other RTX 4090s, however, while its 357.6mm length, 3.5-slot thickness and launch-era price premium make it a poor fit for compact builds or value-focused buyers. In 2026, consider one only at a substantial discount, after checking the card’s condition, case clearance and power cabling.

What this review covers

This is the standard black ROG-STRIX-RTX4090-O24G-GAMING, not the separate white edition. It pairs NVIDIA’s AD102-based GeForce RTX 4090 with ASUS’s large triple-fan cooler and a modest factory overclock. The underlying GPU—not the Strix branding—is what determines most of its performance.

The model launched at $1,999, compared with $1,599 for NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 Founders Edition. That $400 difference bought a more elaborate cooler, additional features and overclocking headroom, not a new class of gaming speed. Those launch prices are historical reference points, not current 2026 prices or a recommendation to pay them now.

Gaming performance: outstanding at 4K, but not meaningfully faster than another 4090

The RTX 4090 remains a high-end option for demanding 4K games, including titles with ray tracing, and its 24GB of memory is useful for large textures and other memory-heavy workloads. At 1440p, it can deliver very high frame rates, but the CPU may become the limiting factor, so average FPS at that resolution can obscure the GPU’s full capabilities. For comparisons, 4K performance and frame-time consistency are more informative than a single 1440p average.

The Strix’s clock figures sound more dramatic than its practical lead. ASUS lists 2,610MHz in default mode and 2,640MHz in OC mode; the Founders Edition’s listed boost is 2,520MHz. In Tom’s Hardware’s Metro Exodus test, the Strix averaged about 2,791MHz against 2,738MHz for the Founders Edition—roughly a 1.9% clock difference in that test. Clock speed is not a direct promise of the same percentage gain in every game, and the review’s broader finding was that RTX 4090 cards using the same GPU tend to perform similarly.

That means the Strix’s main gaming benefit is not a transformative FPS uplift. Its cooler can run the GPU at lower temperatures or fan speeds, and its thermal and power headroom may offer room for tuning. Manual overclocking results vary by sample and system; do not pay a large premium on the assumption that every card will reach a particular clock.

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX® 4080 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card (PCIe 4.0, 16GB GDDR6X, HDMI 2.1a, DisplayPort 1.4a), 3 Year Warranty
  • NVIDIA Ada Lovelace Streaming Multiprocessors: Up to 2x performance and power efficiency
  • 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 2X AI performance
  • 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2X ray tracing performance
  • Axial-tech fans scaled up for 23% more airflow
  • New patented vapor chamber with milled heatspreader for lower GPU temps

For ultrawide gaming, high-refresh play or 4K ray tracing with DLSS, the card has substantial performance and memory capacity. Actual results depend on the game, settings, CPU, drivers and use of upscaling or frame-generation features. Older review charts are useful for comparing the Strix with other RTX 4090 models tested at the time, but they are not current 2026 game benchmarks. ServeTheHome’s experience using the card with a 240Hz Samsung Neo G9 is a useful example of ultrawide use, not a controlled benchmark that predicts every system’s results.

Cooling, noise and build

The three-fan cooler, large heatsink, heatpipes and vapor chamber are the strongest reasons to choose this model over a smaller, cheaper RTX 4090. Tom’s Hardware praised its thermal and noise performance. PC Gamer recorded a load temperature just above 60°C in its test environment. Treat that figure as a result from that review setup—not a guaranteed temperature for every card, case or room.

Ambient temperature, case airflow, BIOS mode, fan curve, dust and sample condition all affect temperatures and noise. A core-temperature reading alone also does not describe hotspot temperature, memory temperature or fan speed. In a used card, aging thermal interface material, worn fan bearings or clogged fins can change results from those recorded when the product was new.

  • 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. Now with support for up to 8K resolution, these cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilitiesAvoid using unofficial software
  • OC edition: Boost Clock 1890 MHz (OC mode)/1860 MHz (Gaming mode)

The card also includes a dual-BIOS switch, Aura Sync lighting and FanConnect headers, which can tie compatible case fans to GPU temperature. ASUS’s GPU Tweak III software supports monitoring and tuning. These are useful extras, but they do not make the card substantially faster by themselves. The included support bracket is welcome: Tom’s Hardware measured the card at just over 2.5kg, so supporting it helps limit sag.

Size and compatibility: measure more than GPU length

At 357.6mm long and 70.1mm thick, this is a four-slot-class card in practical terms, despite its 3.5-slot specification. Its cooler can block adjacent expansion slots, obstruct headers or complicate access to other devices—particularly on micro-ATX boards and workstation systems. The card’s size is a system-level cost, not a cosmetic detail.

  • Measure from the rear expansion brackets to the nearest obstruction, accounting for front fans or a radiator.
  • Check vertical clearance from the motherboard to the side panel, including the space needed for the 16-pin cable.
  • Confirm which PCIe slots and motherboard headers the cooler will cover.
  • Plan for the support bracket and enough room to install or remove it.
  • If connector access will be cramped, connect the GPU power cable before seating the card.

A case’s advertised maximum GPU length does not guarantee that a front-mounted radiator will leave enough room. Nor does a card that physically fits necessarily leave enough side-panel clearance for a safe, unstrained power cable.

Power and the 16-pin cable

The card uses a 16-pin high-power connector and ASUS recommends a 1,000W PSU, with its recommendation based on a system with a fully overclocked CPU and GPU. A suitable quality supply and compatible cable matter as much as the wattage printed on the PSU. If the PSU maker offers a native high-power cable confirmed for that exact PSU, prefer it. If using the included adapter, connect its required individual PSU leads directly; do not improvise with incompatible cables or questionable daisy-chain arrangements.

  1. Check that the cable or adapter is explicitly compatible with the PSU and GPU.
  2. Insert the connector fully so there is no visible gap.
  3. Keep the cable straight as it exits the plug, and avoid a tight bend immediately at the connector.
  4. Verify the side panel does not press the cable sharply against the plug.
  5. Inspect the connector periodically for discoloration, deformation or other heat damage.

These precautions address fit, compatibility and connection quality; they do not mean every RTX 4090 will develop a connector problem. Reports about individual failures should not be treated as evidence that failure is universal. ServeTheHome also recommends planning the cable route and connecting it before installation when access is difficult.

Is it a good buy in 2026?

It can be, but the case for buying one is now primarily about price, condition and a specific need for its 24GB of VRAM or quiet air-cooled design. ASUS’s current US ROG graphics-card catalog is centered on RTX 50-series products, so treat a 4090 Strix as legacy stock or a resale purchase rather than a normal current-generation model. A new-in-box listing is not automatically a good deal: check the seller, return policy and warranty status rather than assuming ordinary current-product support.

Compare the total price with current alternatives available in your region on the day you shop. ASUS US listings observed on August 18, 2026 showed ROG Astral RTX 5080 models around $1,849.99–$1,899.99 and ROG Astral RTX 5090 models around $4,229.99–$4,429.99. Those are dated, volatile store price signals—not market averages or guaranteed current offers. The RTX 5080 is a newer generation but has 16GB of memory; the RTX 5090 is a newer flagship with 32GB GDDR7 and newer-generation capabilities, but the cited ROG prices are far higher. Compare current game and application benchmarks for your workload instead of assuming that generational labels alone settle the choice.

There is no responsible universal used-price target without a live local market comparison. As a decision rule, the Strix should be meaningfully cheaper than a comparable current-generation alternative after accounting for warranty, condition and resale risk. Do not pay near its $1,999 launch price merely for the Strix name or its cooler. If it costs as much as—or more than—a suitable newer card, the newer model may offer a better combination of features, support and purchase protection.

Creators and workstation users

The 24GB framebuffer can help with large 3D scenes, GPU rendering, AI inference or image generation, high-resolution video projects, large textures and simulations. The card’s output selection—three DisplayPort 1.4a and two HDMI 2.1a ports, with up to four displays—can also suit multi-monitor and ultrawide setups.

Gaming suitability is not the same as professional application suitability. Before buying for work, check that your software supports CUDA or OptiX as needed, whether it benefits from newer encoding or AI features, whether a certified driver or ECC is required, and whether 24GB is sufficient for your projects. The Strix is a consumer card; its 24GB capacity does not by itself make it a workstation-certified product. Application-specific benchmarks and support requirements should decide the purchase.

Used-card inspection checklist

For a used unit, request clear photos of the card, power connector, bracket and accessories, plus proof of purchase if warranty eligibility matters. Ask whether the BIOS was modified or the card disassembled. Where possible, test it under a sustained workload and check for stable clocks, plausible temperatures, fan noise, artifacts and unexpected shutdowns. Inspect for dust, damaged fins, connector discoloration, missing screws, worn fans and signs of repair. Coil whine can vary by sample, frame rate, game and power supply; treat it as a possible preference issue to evaluate in person, not proof of a universal defect.
