Connect the controller to your Xbox or Windows PC with a data-capable USB cable, press the Xbox button, then test it in the dashboard or a controller-supported game. Many Xbox One controllers use micro-USB; Xbox Series X|S controllers use USB-C. A cable that only charges devices can light up the controller without sending any button input.
The same setup is not guaranteed to work on every phone, tablet, TV, or game. Those devices also need to support wired controllers, and may require an adapter or a compatible game.
Identify your controller and cable
“Wired Xbox controller” can mean an official Xbox Wireless Controller connected by USB, or a separate controller designed to stay plugged in. An official controller retains the “Xbox Wireless Controller” name even when you use it by cable.
- Xbox 360 wired controller: Usually has a permanently attached USB cable.
- Many Xbox One controllers: Use a micro-USB port.
- Xbox Series X|S controllers: Use a USB-C port.
Check the port on your controller before choosing a cable. The connector shape alone is not enough: USB-C describes the plug, not whether the cable carries data. Choose a cable specified to support data transfer. A charge-only cable may power the controller but cannot transmit its inputs to the console or PC.

Microsoft describes its current Xbox Wireless Controller as supporting wired USB connectivity and lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android, and iOS compatibility, with mobile support qualified by device and operating-system version. Connect it to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S
- Turn on the console.
- Plug the matching end of a data-capable cable into the controller.
- Plug the other end into a USB port on the console.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- When the button lights, test the D-pad, sticks, triggers, and menu buttons in the dashboard or a game.
The console should recognize a supported controller over USB; you do not need to pair it wirelessly for this connection. If another controller is already signed in, select the right player profile if the console prompts you.
Wired play means the controller does not need to rely on AA batteries for that session. Charging behavior is a separate matter: a rechargeable battery pack may charge over USB, but this depends on the battery accessory and controller model. Do not assume that connecting a cable means every battery arrangement is charging.

If the controller does not respond, follow Microsoft’s USB-port guidance or controller troubleshooting. Support-page wording can vary by region.
Connect it to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
- Connect the controller directly to a USB port on the PC, using a data-capable micro-USB or USB-C cable as appropriate.
- Press the Xbox button and wait for Windows to recognize the controller.
- Open a game that supports controllers and test the inputs.
- If the game does not respond, check its controller settings or test another game that supports Xbox/XInput controllers.
There are three separate checks here: Windows detection means the operating system sees the controller; game detection means that particular game accepts controller input; and Xbox Accessories app detection means Microsoft’s configuration app supports the connection and controller. One working does not guarantee the others.
For supported controllers, use the Xbox Accessories app to configure button mapping. Microsoft lists app support for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11; Windows use requires a compatible USB-C cable. Check Microsoft’s controller page for supported configurations.

Use it with Steam
- Plug the controller into the PC and open Steam.
- Go to Steam > Settings > Controller and check whether the controller appears.
- Launch a game that supports controllers and test the controls.
- If needed, configure the layout through Steam Input or the game’s own controller settings.
Steam may show generic labels or PlayStation-style button prompts even when the controller works. That can be a game or layout issue, rather than evidence that the controller has failed. For Steam’s current guidance, see Steam Controller FAQ.

Wired mobile support depends on the exact device, operating-system version, adapter, and game. Microsoft lists Android and iOS compatibility for the current Xbox Wireless Controller, but qualifies it for select devices and versions; that listing is not a promise that every phone will accept it by cable.
- Check whether the phone or tablet supports wired USB controllers. Some Android devices need USB host/OTG support and an adapter.
- Identify the device’s port. Use a compatible data adapter for USB-C or Lightning devices, or connect directly when the ports allow it.
- Connect the controller with a data-capable cable, unlock the device, and give it a moment to respond.
- Open a game that supports external controllers and test the inputs.
If it is not detected, try another known-good data cable or compatible adapter, then test a different controller-supported game. Some games support controllers only over Bluetooth or only on selected devices. Even when a controller works in a game, it may not navigate every screen of the phone or tablet. If wired support is unavailable or unreliable on your device, Bluetooth may be the simpler option.

For smart TVs and streaming devices, check the manufacturer’s controller guidance. A USB port on a TV does not automatically support game input; support varies by model, app, and streaming platform. Microsoft also cautions that full controller functionality is not available across every device and operating system; start with its support hub for device-specific guidance.

For a systematic check, disconnect the controller and restart the console or PC; reconnect it after startup. If it lights but is not recognized, try the cable and direct port before changing game settings. On Windows, check whether it appears in Xbox Accessories or Windows game-controller settings; in Steam, check Controller settings. If it works wirelessly but not over USB, the cable, USB port, or controller port is a more likely place to investigate than the game.
Headsets and other accessories
Working controller input over USB does not guarantee that every headset, microphone, or accessory will work on every host. Support depends on the controller model, headset, device, game or chat app, and—on third-party controllers—firmware and licensing. The official Xbox Wireless Controller has a 3.5-mm stereo headset jack, but Microsoft still qualifies compatibility across devices and operating-system versions.
Should you buy a dedicated wired controller?
If you already own a compatible Xbox controller, first try the correct data cable. A separate controller is not necessary just to test wired play.
- Official Xbox Wireless Controller plus cable: A flexible choice if you want both wired and wireless play. Some packages may not include a cable; check the listing and port type. Wireless use of the current controller uses AA batteries unless you install a rechargeable battery accessory. See Microsoft’s product details.
- Official controller-and-USB-C cable bundle: Useful if you want an included cable for a USB-C controller and prefer to avoid checking cable compatibility separately. The bundle listing advertises a 9-foot cable for wired gaming; availability and price vary, and it is not for older micro-USB controllers. See the official bundle page.
- Dedicated third-party wired controller: Consider one if you prefer a permanently wired design or specific features. Verify the exact model’s Xbox and Windows compatibility, as well as its audio, vibration, remapping, and cable details. For example, 8BitDo lists the Ultimate C Wired Controller for Xbox as compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows. That does not imply mobile, Switch, TV, or wireless Xbox support.
A wired Xbox controller is not automatically compatible with PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, macOS, phones, or smart TVs. Check the specific model’s support list before buying. For accessibility setups, the Xbox Adaptive Controller is a separate USB-connected accessibility hub for external inputs, not an ordinary wired-gamepad replacement.
