To let a child play online, an adult family organizer must allow multiplayer in the child’s Xbox privacy settings. Go to account.xbox.com/settings, select the child, then set You can join multiplayer games to Allow under the communication and multiplayer controls. Chat, friend invitations, clubs, and other features have separate permissions.
Change the multiplayer permission online
- Open Xbox privacy settings and sign in with the adult Microsoft account that manages the family group.
- Select the child’s gamertag or account. Make sure it is the child’s account used to sign in to the game.
- Open Privacy & online safety or Xbox privacy. If shown, choose View details & customize.
- Open Communication & multiplayer.
- Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow, then save or apply the change.
- Fully close the game and reopen it. If multiplayer remains blocked, sign the child out and back in, or restart the console or PC.
Menu names and layout can vary between the website, console, and app. Microsoft’s Family Hub also points parents to family-management tools for children’s online experiences.
Use the Xbox Family Settings app
You can also manage a child’s settings with the Xbox Family Settings app. Sign in as the adult organizer, select the child, open the child’s privacy or online-safety settings, allow joining multiplayer games, and apply the change. Restart the child’s game afterward.

Minecraft’s Parents’ Guide says multiplayer is off by default on child accounts in both Java and Bedrock Edition. Allowing the Xbox multiplayer permission is the account-level step, but it does not automatically enable every online feature. Depending on what the child wants to do, review these separate controls:

- You can add friends: May be needed to connect with friends.
- You can create and join clubs: Review if the child needs club features.
- Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites: Choose the level of communication you are comfortable allowing.
- User-generated content: Review if access to public servers or content created by other players is involved.
- You can broadcast gameplay: Allow only if the child intends to stream.
These controls are separate: a child may be allowed to play online but still be unable to chat, add friends, or join a club. A Realm, public server, or particular game may also have its own account, platform, age, or service requirements. The family setting does not guarantee access to every server or mode.
Choose permissions to match the kind of play
- Play with known friends: Allow multiplayer and consider limiting communication to friends.
- Play on a private family world or Realm: Allow multiplayer and set communication for the people the child needs to contact.
- Join public servers: Allow multiplayer, but consider the potential for contact from strangers and exposure to user-generated content before enabling broader communication.
- Allow multiplayer without voice or text chat: Allow multiplayer while keeping communication blocked or limited, where the game and platform support that combination.
These are options to consider, not universal defaults. Multiplayer can bring messages, invites, griefing, and user-generated content into a child’s experience. Minecraft’s guide discusses these risks and parental controls.

If the setting is missing, locked, or multiplayer is still blocked
- Check who is signed in. The adult must use the Microsoft account that manages the family group, not the child’s account or an unrelated adult, school, or work account. The adult generally needs organizer or parent authority to manage the child.
- Confirm the family relationship. At Microsoft family management, check that the child appears in the group, the adult has the right role, and there is no pending invitation or consent request.
- Verify the selected child and game account. Make sure the permission was changed for the correct gamertag and that the child is using that same Microsoft account in Minecraft or the affected game.
- Recheck related controls. If multiplayer works but friends, chat, clubs, or a Realm do not, review the separate permissions for those features.
- Refresh the game session. Quit the game completely, sign out and back in, and restart the console, PC, or launcher. Confirm the game and platform software are up to date.
- Determine whether it is one game or all games. If only one title is affected after the account permission is correct, check that title’s parental controls, account-linking requirements, and online-service rules.
Account age and consent classification can also affect which controls are available. Microsoft’s rules vary by region and account circumstances; the Minecraft guide describes different child-account age thresholds in some regions. Do not change a birth date to bypass a restriction. If the account is incorrectly classified or the control remains unavailable to the organizer, use Microsoft family management or Microsoft support.

Online multiplayer is different from local play
The Xbox permission is for online multiplayer. Local split-screen or same-device play generally does not require that online permission, though behavior depends on the game and platform. Online play with friends, Realms, and servers does require online access, and cross-platform play may also depend on compatible editions and accounts. Subscription requirements vary by game, device, and mode, so enabling this setting alone does not settle whether a separate service is needed.
