Valve’s Steamworks documentation names its Android-on-Linux compatibility layer Lepton. The documentation describes Lepton as a container-based way to run Android games on Linux, and its clearest confirmed target is Valve’s Steam Frame VR headset—not the Steam Deck or Linux PCs generally.
What Valve’s documentation confirms
On its Steam Frame compatibility page, Valve lists three routes for running software on the headset: Windows games through Proton, Android games through Lepton, and x86 software through FEX. Valve describes Lepton as a compatibility layer that lets Android games run on Linux. It says the layer uses a container to minimize overhead; that is an aim, not a guarantee of zero performance cost.
Valve’s Steam Frame debugging documentation confirms the name directly: “Lepton is the name of our Android compatibility layer.” It also documents developer access to Lepton instances, including an example instance named dev, plus ADB and logcat workflows.

Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset running SteamOS. Valve’s documentation describes it as supporting streamed Steam library content as well as standalone VR and non-VR software, including native Arm64 applications and Android APKs. The compatibility page identifies its platform as Arm64 with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, running SteamOS, which Valve describes as Arch Linux-based.

That hardware context explains the appeal of Android compatibility: a developer with an existing Android Arm64 build may be able to adapt or reuse it for Steam Frame rather than making a separate Linux build from scratch. Valve specifically notes that a mobile-optimized Android version of a VR game may make sense on the headset. This is a development opportunity, not a promise that every Android game will work or be offered through Steam.
Lepton, Proton and FEX are different tools

Calling Lepton “Proton for Android” is a handy analogy, but it should not be taken literally: the layers target different software environments and Valve describes different approaches. Nor does “compatibility layer” mean that Android apps run natively as SteamOS applications; Valve says Lepton is the route for Android games.

What this does—and does not—mean for Steam users
- Confirmed: Valve has named Lepton in official Steamworks documentation and documents Android APK support as part of Steam Frame’s software stack.
- Not established: A general Android-games feature for Steam Deck, Steam Machine, or desktop Steam for Linux. The documentation places Lepton in the Steam Frame development and compatibility context.
- Not established: A consumer-facing Steam client setting, general APK sideloading workflow, or Android games storefront for all Steam users.
- Not established: Universal APK compatibility, Google Play Services or licensing support, or a confirmed code relationship between Lepton and Waydroid.
Valve’s SteamOS information for Steam Deck discusses the vast majority of Steam games running through Proton. That does not rule out future use of related technology elsewhere, but it is not evidence that Lepton is available on Deck now. Likewise, Valve’s documentation calls Steam Frame standalone and describes its Android support; it does not show that any Linux user can install Lepton as a general-purpose desktop package.
Developer workflow: documented for Steam Frame
Valve’s debugging guide documents connecting to the headset over SSH or ADB, inspecting a Lepton instance, viewing its logs, and installing an APK. For example:

The guide also documents launching a “Lepton Development” instance. Developers should follow Valve’s current debugging instructions for the required setup and device access.

Running an APK through an Android compatibility layer does not by itself guarantee a Steam Frame-ready game. As with Android software on other environments, compatibility can depend on an app’s assumptions about Google Play Services, licensing, Android-specific APIs, graphics features, bundled ARM libraries, storage and account behavior, or sensors such as a gyroscope. Touch-first controls may also need redesign for VR controllers or a gamepad. These are potential porting and compatibility issues, not a list of limitations Valve has confirmed for Lepton.

Steam Frame developers can also choose among native Linux Arm64, Windows through Proton, Android through Lepton, and x86 through FEX, according to Valve’s platform documentation. Which route makes sense depends on the existing build, required services and input model, and the work needed to test and prepare the game for the headset.
