In the current desktop Steam client, open Steam → Settings → In Game, change Web browser home page, and enter the full URL you want to use. This changes the homepage for Steam’s in-game overlay browser—not your computer’s default browser or the Steam Store homepage.
Change the Steam overlay browser homepage
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Click Steam in the upper-left corner, then select Settings.
- Choose In Game in the Settings sidebar.
- Find Web browser home page (the wording may vary slightly by client version).
- Select the existing address and enter the complete URL, including
https://. For example, usehttps://duckduckgo.com,https://steamcommunity.com, or the address of a game wiki, guide, map, build planner, or database. - Close Settings or use the confirmation control shown in your client.
To test it, launch a game through Steam and press Shift+Tab to open the overlay. Choose the browser from the overlay toolbar, then press its Home button. The configured page should load. Shift+Tab is the default overlay shortcut, but it can be changed in Steam settings. The overlay includes a browser, though not every game supports the overlay reliably (Valve’s Steam Overlay documentation).
Steam may restore browser tabs from an earlier session, so opening the browser does not always show the homepage immediately. If you see an old page, use Home to test the setting rather than assuming it failed. Valve has documented browser-tab restoration controls and fixes in client updates (tab-restoration option; browser-tab restoration fixes).
Why older instructions show a different menu
Older guides often direct users to Steam → Settings → Web Browser. That reflects an earlier Steam interface; in the current desktop client, look under In Game instead. Steam can change labels and layouts, and stable, beta, and operating-system versions may differ slightly. Current guidance and user reports place the homepage field in the In Game settings (Steam Community discussion).

If you cannot find or edit the field
- Field is missing: Make sure you are using the regular desktop client, open Settings → In Game, and enlarge the Settings window or scroll the page. Update and restart Steam, then check again. Steam Deck Gaming Mode and Big Picture do not necessarily show the same layout; Desktop Mode may make the desktop settings easier to locate.
- Field will not accept typing: One community user reported that right-clicking the field and choosing Paste worked when ordinary Ctrl+V did not. This is an intermittent, user-reported workaround, not an official Valve fix. After pasting, correct the address if needed, save or close Settings, and restart Steam if the change does not take.
- Steam alters or rejects the address: Use a normal absolute HTTPS URL such as
https://example.com. Do not rely onabout:blankor malformed entries such asexample; reports indicate Steam may reject or rewrite blank-page protocol entries (Steam Client Beta discussion). If you want an almost empty start page, use a regular HTTPS page designed for that purpose, or navigate to a suitable page and leave its tab open if tab restoration fits your use.
If the old page keeps appearing
- Open the overlay browser and press Home to check the configured homepage.
- If Home still shows the old destination, close that browser tab and open the browser again.
- Restart Steam, then review Steam → Settings → In Game to confirm the address was retained.
- If the setting is correct but the browser behaves as though it is stuck, consider clearing Steam’s web-browser data as a last resort. Clearing it can remove cookies, cached data, and website sessions, so you may need to sign in again.
Restored tabs or an existing browser tab can make a successful homepage change look ineffective. Valve’s client updates have addressed tab restoration and browser behavior, so test with Home before resetting browser data.
If Shift+Tab does nothing
Confirm that the game was launched through Steam and that Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game is enabled in Steam settings. Check the game’s own Properties settings for an overlay override, verify the shortcut has not been changed, and consider whether another program is intercepting it. Overlay compatibility can also depend on a game’s launch method or rendering setup; the feature is not guaranteed to work in every game (Valve Steamworks documentation).

Steam has several different browser-like destinations. The Store, Library, and Community are Steam client pages; the overlay browser is a web browser opened over a running game; and your operating system’s default browser is a separate application such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. The homepage field controls only the overlay browser’s Home destination. It does not change the Steam Store homepage, your operating system’s default browser, or necessarily where every link clicked in Steam will open.

It is not a full substitute for a standalone browser: extensions, some logins or CAPTCHA checks, payment flows, media features, and pages designed for narrow windows may not work well. Use your regular browser for sensitive account or payment activity. Keeping a browser page pinned over a game can also affect the available screen space and performance. Valve’s redesigned overlay supports browser windows and pinning them over a game (Steam overlay announcement); later client updates also added per-game overlay browser bookmarks (Steam client announcement).
