RedMagic’s compact OLED gaming tablet is no longer just upcoming: it has announced the REDMAGIC Astra 2, with global open sales scheduled for August 26, 2026. It has a 9.06-inch OLED display and an 8,300mAh battery, but the built-in fan detail appears to belong to the original Astra. RedMagic’s Astra 2 specifications instead describe a liquid-cooling system and do not list an internal fan.
Two generations, two cooling designs
The apparent confusion is easy to trace. The original REDMAGIC Astra, launched internationally in 2025, has a 9.06-inch OLED screen, an 8,200mAh battery and a 20,000-rpm Turbo Fan. The newer Astra 2 keeps the compact OLED format and slightly increases battery capacity, but RedMagic describes its cooling as AquaCore Cooling System 2.0: visible liquid cooling, Liquid Metal 3.0, a vapor chamber and a 12-layer thermal design. The company’s Astra 2 product page does not list a built-in fan. RedMagic’s original Astra specifications and Astra 2 specifications distinguish the models.

So the upgrade is not simply a bigger battery plus a fan. The Astra 2 brings a newer processor, a faster display specification and a different advertised approach to cooling; its battery increase over the original is 100mAh.

What the Astra 2’s display and hardware offer
RedMagic specifies a 9.06-inch OLED panel with 2,400 × 1,504 resolution and a refresh rate of up to 185Hz. It also lists 300Hz global touch sampling, up to 2,000Hz instantaneous touch response, peak brightness up to 1,600 nits, 100% DCI-P3 coverage and claimed color accuracy of about ΔE 0.7. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

The 185Hz figure is the panel’s maximum refresh rate, not a promise that games will run at 185 frames per second. Actual frame rates depend on each game’s performance cap, graphics settings, software support, heat and power limits. High refresh is most useful when a game can produce enough frames to take advantage of it; it can also increase power use.
Inside, RedMagic lists Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a RedCore R4 gaming chip, LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.1 storage. Configurations go up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. RedMagic cites a 3nm process and claims up to 4.6GHz CPU clock, 20% higher overall performance, 23% better graphics performance and 35% lower power consumption. Treat those performance and efficiency figures as company or platform claims, not independently verified Astra 2 test results.
What liquid cooling does—and what remains unproven
Liquid cooling does not make heat disappear. It moves heat away from concentrated hot spots and spreads it through cooling hardware so the device can dissipate it through its chassis. The Astra 2’s advertised combination of liquid cooling, liquid metal and a vapor chamber is intended to manage heat during demanding use. Whether it sustains higher performance than the fan-cooled original, or stays cooler in a particular game, requires comparable testing.

A sealed design without an advertised mechanical fan could avoid fan noise, but the available specification alone does not establish how quiet the tablet is under load—or independently confirm every internal detail. A fan actively moves air; a liquid-and-vapor-chamber system still ultimately depends on the tablet shedding heat into its surroundings. Long sessions, warm rooms and demanding games can all affect performance.
RedMagic publishes a one-hour Call of Duty: Mobile comparison under its REDMAGIC Labs label. It reports 145.3fps average versus 143.8fps, 136.5fps versus 127.9fps for 1% lows, 8.33 hours versus 5 hours of gaming battery life, and 43.8°C versus 45.1°C for temperature. These are vendor test results, not an independent head-to-head assessment; the comparison conditions and test setup matter when interpreting them.
Battery capacity is not the same as battery life
The Astra 2 has an 8,300mAh battery and supports charging up to 75W, according to RedMagic. The company claims up to 9.09 hours of Genshin Impact at 60fps, up to 9.6 hours of video editing, photo editing and daily use, and up to 27.3 days of standby. Those are manufacturer figures rather than independently verified endurance results.

Milliamp-hours alone cannot tell you how long a tablet will last. Runtime also depends on screen brightness and refresh rate, the game or app, wireless use, chipset load and other test conditions. RedMagic also advertises bypass charging, which can power the tablet while gaming without relying on the battery in the usual way. That may be useful for plugged-in sessions, but it does not replace a need to check independent battery and thermal testing.
Ports and practical gaming features
RedMagic lists two USB-C ports, dual speakers, Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, a customizable Magic Key, RGB lighting, a 9MP front camera, a 13MP rear camera, and fingerprint and face unlocking. It advertises wired display output up to 4K at 144fps or 8K at 60fps, along with dual USB-C charging up to 75W.
Before buying, check which port supports charging and display output, whether the included cable or a particular adapter is required, and whether a case or controller attachment blocks either port. The product materials also do not settle every buyer question, such as microSD expansion or cellular connectivity, so confirm those details for the exact regional configuration rather than assuming they are included.

The US specifications page says a charger is not included in the standard package, while early-bird offers may include one. RedMagic’s global launch page lists the Astra 2 at $699 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, or $799 for 16GB and 512GB, in Eclipse and Starfrost colors. The US storefront has separately displayed a starting price of $749. Because those pages do not show the same starting figure, do not treat one price as universal: verify the live price, configuration, taxes, shipping and warranty terms on the store serving your country.

Who should consider it?
The Astra 2’s appeal is specific: flagship-class gaming hardware in a compact tablet, with OLED, a very high refresh-rate ceiling, a large battery for its size and cooling designed for sustained play. It could suit someone who wants a small screen for handheld or controller-based gaming and values those features over a larger workspace.
It is less obviously suited to buyers who mainly want a productivity tablet, a large split-screen canvas, cellular service or expandable storage. Its price is premium, and high refresh rates only help when apps and games support them. Buyers seeking a fan in particular should not assume Astra 2 has one: RedMagic explicitly advertised the original Astra’s 20,000-rpm fan, but does not list one for Astra 2.
Before committing, compare the exact local price and configuration, charger and accessory bundle, warranty and return terms, and compatibility with the games and controller setup you plan to use. The older Astra may be relevant if you specifically want its advertised fan-based cooling, while a larger gaming tablet may make more sense if screen size is the priority. Neither alternative should be chosen on cooling claims alone; sustained performance and noise need comparable testing.

REDMAGIC Astra 2 is an announced compact OLED gaming tablet with an 8,300mAh battery, up to 185Hz refresh rate and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The fan in the original Astra is the likely source of the claim that carried over into reports about the new model; Astra 2’s official materials instead describe liquid cooling and do not list a mechanical fan. Its specifications make it an intriguing small gaming slate, but independent testing of sustained performance, battery life, temperatures and noise will matter more than headline numbers when deciding whether its premium price is justified.
