Intel reportedly reached the final stage of Sony’s 2022 competition to design the processor for its unannounced next-generation PlayStation, but AMD won the work, according to a September 16, 2024 Reuters report. The account describes a serious bid—not a finished Intel chip or an officially announced PlayStation 6.
What Reuters reported about Intel’s PlayStation bid
Reuters reported that Sony’s bidding process took place in 2022 and that Intel and AMD were the final two contenders. Broadcom was among the companies eliminated earlier. The report, based on people familiar with the process, said discussions between Intel and Sony lasted for months and included senior executives, engineers and both companies’ CEOs. Reuters’ account, published September 16, 2024, is the source for the reported contest and its outcome.
Intel was reportedly pursuing both the custom processor design and a manufacturing opportunity tied to its foundry ambitions. That does not mean Intel had completed a PlayStation 6 system-on-chip (SoC), or that Sony had committed to producing one. Reuters also reported that Intel’s plan involved bringing in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) as a manufacturing partner. The final production arrangement was not publicly established, so it would be misleading to say that Intel had secured a plan to manufacture every chip itself or that the console would have used Intel’s 18A process.

What a console SoC includes
A console SoC is much more than a stand-alone CPU. It integrates major parts of the system, typically including CPU cores, graphics engines, memory controllers, display and media functions, security and platform-management components, and other custom logic. AMD describes its semi-custom business as building customer-specific solutions from CPU, GPU and multimedia technologies. Its public filings say AMD semi-custom SoCs power the PlayStation 5. AMD’s filing confirms that existing relationship, but does not publicly disclose PlayStation 6 specifications.

Why AMD reportedly won
The main reported obstacle was commercial: two Reuters sources said Intel and Sony could not agree on how much profit Intel would receive per chip sold to Sony. That is an account attributed to people familiar with the negotiations, not a public explanation issued by Sony or Intel.
AMD also brought an established relationship and experience designing semi-custom PlayStation processors. AMD’s public disclosures confirm its role in the PS5 family; the company also disclosed that the PlayStation 5 Pro uses an updated AMD semi-custom SoC with improved visual fidelity and ray-tracing capabilities. AMD’s PS5 Pro disclosure documents that product, not a PS6 chip. In a custom console project, continuity with a supplier already familiar with the platform can reduce transition risk, though the public filings do not establish that this alone determined Sony’s choice.

Why backward compatibility entered the discussion
Reuters reported that engineers discussed the cost and work involved in maintaining backward compatibility if Sony changed chip partners. That does not mean Intel could not have supported older PlayStation games, or that Sony had settled on a particular compatibility feature set.

Compatibility could require hardware support, emulation, software translation or a combination. The Reuters report does not specify the architecture Intel proposed or Sony’s exact requirements; it describes compatibility as a potential engineering and cost concern, not an insurmountable barrier.

What the reported $30 billion figure means
Reuters said Intel’s internal projections put potential revenue from the opportunity at roughly $30 billion over the contract’s life. The report does not provide enough detail to independently reconstruct that estimate from console volumes, chip prices, refresh models or contract duration. It should not be read as money Sony had committed, revenue Intel earned or profit Intel would have kept.

Why the opportunity mattered to Intel Foundry
Reuters said the opportunity could have supported Intel Foundry utilization for more than five years and given Intel a high-profile customer as it sought to grow its contract-manufacturing business. A multiyear console program can offer sustained demand across a product cycle, even when its per-chip margins are less attractive than those of premium AI accelerators, as Reuters noted.

That combination—volume, duration and a recognizable customer—could have had strategic value beyond the chip revenue itself. It might have strengthened Intel’s credibility with other potential foundry customers. But the report does not establish that the contract would have filled Intel’s factories, guaranteed additional business or turned around the foundry operation; those outcomes cannot be inferred from the projected revenue figure.
What is and is not confirmed about PlayStation 6
Sony has discussed “next-generation platforms” in investor communications, but that is not a formal announcement of a finished PS6 product or a specification sheet. Its 2026 investor Q&A does not publicly specify the console’s hardware. The Reuters report remains the basis for the claim that AMD won the reported chip contract.

So the defensible takeaway is that Intel was reportedly one of two finalists for a major Sony chip program and lost to AMD, with pricing terms and compatibility concerns among the reported factors. The public evidence does not show that Intel built a PS6 SoC, while AMD’s PS5 track record is confirmed and its PS6 role remains reported rather than formally detailed by Sony or AMD.
