On a Windows PC, Fortnite’s settings folder is:
%LOCALAPPDATA%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClientThe main file inside it is GameUserSettings.ini. The fastest way to open the folder is to press Windows key + R, paste the path above, and press Enter. Epic documents this location in its Fortnite support instructions.
Open the Fortnite settings folder quickly
- Press Windows key + R.
- Paste
%LOCALAPPDATA%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. - Press Enter.
Alternatively, open File Explorer, enter %LOCALAPPDATA% in the address bar, and open FortniteGame, Saved, Config, then WindowsClient.
The conventional full path is:
C:Users<YourWindowsUsername>AppDataLocalFortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient%LOCALAPPDATA% is preferable because Windows automatically substitutes the currently signed-in account’s local AppData folder.

Find GameUserSettings.ini
The file most players need is GameUserSettings.ini. It contains important local client preferences, particularly settings related to graphics, display, resolution, and fullscreen behavior. It should not be treated as a complete record of every Fortnite preference: some settings can depend on your account, platform, input device, or other game systems.

If Windows hides file extensions, the file may appear simply as GameUserSettings. The settings folder and this file are different: the folder is WindowsClient, while the configuration file is GameUserSettings.ini.
Fix Fortnite settings that will not save
If Fortnite resets graphics or display settings every time it launches, check whether the file is read-only:
- Open
%LOCALAPPDATA%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. - Right-click
GameUserSettings.iniand select Properties. - Clear the Read-only checkbox.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch Fortnite and test the setting again.
This is the permission fix recommended by Epic’s support guidance. Making the file read-only is not a general performance tweak; it can prevent Fortnite from saving legitimate changes.

If the problem continues, make sure Fortnite is fully closed before editing the file, that you are using the correct Windows account, and that Windows security software or permissions are not blocking changes.
Reset Fortnite’s local settings safely
Deleting the configuration file can provide a clean local settings reset, but custom graphics and other preferences may be lost. Use this safer sequence:
- Exit Fortnite completely.
- Copy
GameUserSettings.inito the desktop as a backup, or rename it toGameUserSettings.backup.ini. - Move or delete the original file from the
WindowsClientfolder. - Launch Fortnite again.
- Reconfigure your settings in the game.
Epic includes deleting the GameUserSettings file in a crash-troubleshooting procedure. Relaunching should allow Fortnite to create a fresh local configuration, but this is not guaranteed to fix every problem and it does not reset account data or every platform-managed preference.

If the folder or file is missing
Try these checks:
- Launch Fortnite once and reach the main menu if possible, then close it completely.
- Run the direct
%LOCALAPPDATA%path again. - Confirm you launched Fortnite under the same Windows account whose AppData folder you are checking.
- Make sure you are looking in
AppDataLocal, notAppDataRoaming. - Do not search only the Epic Games installation directory.
If Fortnite never completed initialization, the folder may not yet exist. A removed configuration may also be recreated only after a successful launch and write operation. Restarting the Epic Games Launcher and Windows can help with an unusual initialization or permissions issue. Do not download a replacement .ini file from an unofficial website.

These are separate locations:
User settings:
%LOCALAPPDATA%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClientGame installation: the custom library directory selected in the Epic Games Launcher.
Fortnite may be installed on another drive or under a custom Epic Games Library folder while its per-user configuration remains under the current Windows profile. Searching C:Program FilesEpic Games is therefore not a dependable way to find GameUserSettings.ini.

Verify Fortnite files if the problem persists
If resetting the local configuration does not solve crashes or corruption errors, verify the installation:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Select the three-dot menu beside Fortnite.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify and wait for the check to finish.
According to Epic’s verification instructions, this checks local game files and repairs files that differ or are damaged. Epic also says verification does not affect saved data. It may not resolve a problem caused solely by file permissions, a driver, or a local settings value.

No. This is a Windows PC path. PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and other consoles do not expose a Windows AppData directory to players. Do not assume the same folder exists on another PC operating system or a streaming service; the instructions here apply to the Windows build.

Can you edit the file manually?
Yes, but manual editing is best reserved for advanced troubleshooting. Close Fortnite first, back up the original file, change only values you understand, and preserve the file’s syntax. Avoid copying arbitrary values from unofficial “FPS boost” guides. After editing, reopen Fortnite and confirm the result in the game’s menus.
If Fortnite overwrites your change, possible reasons include the game rewriting settings during launch or exit, inconsistent permissions, a read-only attribute, an update, or the fact that the setting is controlled somewhere other than this file. For ordinary players, changing settings inside Fortnite remains the safest approach.
