Yes, but only in limited ways. You cannot permanently enter a custom RAM amount in Aternos’s normal settings. Aternos assigns memory based on your server software and Minecraft version. As checked on August 18, 2026, Aternos also offers temporary 500 MB RAM boosts through Medal, with up to five active boosts for a maximum of 2.5 GB extra RAM for seven days.
If that is not enough, your practical choices are to reduce the server’s workload or move to a paid host such as exaroton, where you can select between 2 GB and 16 GB of RAM.
Can you manually increase Aternos RAM?
No—not as a permanent, user-controlled setting. Aternos assigns RAM according to the server software and Minecraft version. Its official documentation gives Vanilla 1.20.1 as an example receiving 2,400 MB, but that is not a universal allocation for every server.
You can view the assigned memory in the server section while your server is online. Aternos does not provide a normal slider or text field for permanently choosing a larger amount.

Changing Java launch arguments, editing server.properties, or allocating more memory in your Minecraft launcher will not increase the RAM available to the remote Aternos server. The launcher setting affects your own computer’s Minecraft client, not the hosted server.

How to get Aternos’s free RAM boost
Aternos currently documents a Medal promotion that provides a temporary increase. The official instructions specify a Windows PC.
- Install Medal on a Windows PC and create or sign in to a Medal account.
- Launch Minecraft or Hytale.
- Press F8 to record a clip.
- Open Medal and select Quests.
- Find the Aternos RAM Boost quest.
- Enter your Aternos server IP when prompted.
- Confirm the redemption.
- Restart the Aternos server.
Each qualifying clip provides 500 MB for seven days. You can stack up to five active boosts, giving a stated maximum of 2.5 GB of additional RAM. The boost must be redeemed successfully and the server restarted before the extra allocation is expected to appear.
This is a current partnership or promotion, not a permanent Aternos feature. Availability, requirements, supported operating systems, and interface labels may change. Check the official Aternos RAM Boost instructions if the Medal quest is missing or the steps look different.

Does high RAM usage always mean Aternos needs more RAM?
No. Java may retain data in memory instead of immediately returning it to the operating system, so a high usage figure alone does not prove that the server is running out of memory.
More RAM is a likely part of the solution when you see one or more of these signs:

- The server cannot start because its memory requirement exceeds the allocation.
- A modpack or plugin explicitly requires more memory.
- Server logs repeatedly show garbage-collection or memory-related errors.
- Memory-related failures become more frequent as players, chunks, entities, mods, or plugins are added.
If the server merely displays substantial RAM usage but does not crash, investigate other causes before assuming that more memory will fix it. Low TPS and lag can instead come from CPU limits, excessive entities, redstone machines, chunk generation, network latency, or a broken mod or plugin.
Ways to reduce memory pressure and lag
Use Paper or Purpur where compatible
Aternos recommends Paper or Purpur for performance. According to Aternos, they can perform better than modded server software even when the modded option has a larger memory allocation. That is a host recommendation, not a universal benchmark: Paper or Purpur is not suitable for every modpack.
Reduce the server’s workload
- Remove unused mods and plugins.
- Avoid running overlapping mods and plugins that provide the same function.
- Lower view distance and simulation distance.
- Limit large numbers of mobs, villagers, entities, redstone machines, and automated farms.
- Avoid unnecessary chunk loading.
- Remove unused worlds and dimensions.
- Keep every mod and plugin compatible with the selected Minecraft version.
Pregenerating a world can reduce lag from live chunk generation, but it also creates additional world data and should be used only when the server has enough resources and the tool is appropriate. These changes may improve tick performance without increasing RAM, because RAM and CPU/TPS bottlenecks are different problems.

RAM is not the same as storage
RAM is temporary working memory used while the server runs. Storage holds the world, plugins, mods, configuration files, and backups, including while the server is offline.
Aternos separately limits each server to 4 GB of storage. Reaching that limit can prevent the server from starting, but deleting files does not give the server more RAM.
If the error concerns server size, Aternos recommends enabling the world’s Optimize option, deleting unused worlds, removing unused mods and plugins, removing unused region files, or resetting unused Nether and End dimensions where appropriate. See the Aternos storage-limit guide.

If your server repeatedly runs out of memory and the Medal boost and optimization are not enough, paid hosting is the reliable route. Aternos specifically directs users who need more resources to exaroton.
Exaroton lets you select between 2 GB and 16 GB of RAM. Its documented pricing is usage-based: one credit per GB of RAM per hour, with one credit equal to €0.01. For example, a 4 GB server running for one hour costs four credits, or €0.04, before other applicable account or storage considerations. Exaroton is not a conventional fixed monthly server plan, and more RAM is not a guaranteed cure for every performance problem. Its resources documentation notes that CPU sharing also affects performance and gives 0.5 shared CPU cores per GB of selected RAM as an example. Shared CPU is not the same as a dedicated physical core.
Exaroton also has a separate 10 GB storage limit, so migration does not remove every hosting constraint. Review the resource details and current pricing before moving a server.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Medal boost is not visible
- Confirm that the Aternos quest redemption succeeded.
- Check that you entered the correct Aternos server IP.
- Restart the server after redemption.
- Check the RAM indicator while the server is online.
- Confirm that the seven-day boost has not expired.
- Check whether five boosts are already active.
The server still lags after getting more RAM
Check TPS and tick time, entities, redstone, chunk loading, view distance, network latency, and recently installed mods or plugins. Additional RAM helps a memory-starved server, but it cannot guarantee lower latency or higher TPS.
The server will not start
Identify the exact error before changing resources. It may concern out-of-memory usage, the 4 GB storage limit, a corrupt world, an incompatible mod or plugin, a version mismatch, or a queue or service-status issue. “Get more RAM” is not the correct fix for all of these failures.
