The RTX 4080 Super does not require a special motherboard. Any compatible board with a full-length PCIe x16 graphics slot can run it, including PCIe 4.0 models. For a new gaming PC, the best all-round pairing is generally a quality AMD B650 or B650E DDR5 motherboard with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Intel builders should look at B760 DDR5 for locked processors or Z790 DDR5 for unlocked CPUs and overclocking.
Choose the motherboard for the CPU, memory, storage layout, case, networking, and expansion needs—not because the RTX 4080 Super needs an expensive chipset.

What motherboard does the RTX 4080 Super need?
The graphics card uses a standard PCIe graphics interface. Install it in the motherboard’s primary full-length PCIe x16 slot, normally the upper slot connected to the CPU.

NVIDIA lists the reference RTX 4080 Super with 320 W total graphics power, a 750 W required system power recommendation for the reference configuration, and reference dimensions of 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, and three slots. Add-in-board cards can be substantially larger. Check NVIDIA’s specifications and installation guidance, then verify the exact dimensions of the ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, PNY, Zotac, or other card you are purchasing.
Power comes from the PSU, not the motherboard’s CPU VRM. NVIDIA specifies either three PCIe 8-pin cables used with the supplied adapter or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for at least 450 W. A quality ATX 3.x PSU with a suitable native high-power GPU cable is usually the cleanest solution. The correct capacity can be higher than 750 W when the system includes a power-hungry processor, overclocking, or unusually high transient loads.

PCIe 4.0 is enough; PCIe 5.0 is optional
You do not need a PCIe 5.0 motherboard to use an RTX 4080 Super. PCIe 5.0 is backward-compatible with PCIe 4.0 devices, and a properly wired PCIe 4.0 x16 slot is generally sufficient for this GPU.
PCIe 5.0 can still be valuable for next-generation NVMe SSDs or future expansion. That is a storage and upgrade decision, not a requirement for current graphics performance. A motherboard advertising PCIe 5.0 may also share lanes between a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and the graphics slot, so inspect the manual rather than relying on the chipset name.
Best AMD motherboard path: B650 or B650E
For a new AMD gaming build in the 2024 context, start with a B650 or B650E ATX motherboard and a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or another suitable AM5 processor. The 7800X3D uses the AM5 socket, DDR5 memory, and supports PCIe 5.0 at the processor level. AMD lists support across several AM5 chipsets, including B650, B650E, X670, and X670E.
See AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D specifications for the processor’s platform details.

Best overall AMD category: B650 ATX with Wi-Fi
A good B650 board normally provides everything a single-GPU gaming PC needs: DDR5 support, a primary graphics slot, multiple M.2 sockets, modern USB, 2.5Gb Ethernet on many models, and a useful AM5 upgrade path.
Strong candidate families include:
- MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi
- ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus WiFi
- Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX
Choose between them using the exact rear USB layout, BIOS recovery features, M.2 lane map, Wi-Fi version, audio outputs, warranty, and local price. The RTX 4080 Super will not render faster merely because the board carries a premium brand or more elaborate heatsinks.
When B650E is worth considering
B650E is useful when you specifically want PCIe 5.0 available for the graphics slot or want a particular board’s storage and expansion layout. It is not necessary for RTX 4080 Super performance. If the board’s extra features do not match your planned SSDs or add-in cards, standard B650 is usually the more rational purchase.
Premium AMD choice: X670E
X670E makes sense for a demanding workstation-style gaming system with several NVMe drives, many USB devices, additional expansion cards, advanced diagnostics, or more flexible lane allocation. Candidate families include the ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero, MSI MPG X670E Carbon WiFi, and Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master.
Do not buy X670E solely because the RTX 4080 Super is a high-end graphics card. For one GPU, one or two SSDs, and ordinary USB requirements, its additional cost may deliver little practical value.
Best Intel motherboard path: B760 or Z790
Intel’s LGA1700 platform supports 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation Core processors. The motherboard decision depends on the processor, memory standard, and expansion requirements.
Best Intel value category: B760 DDR5
Choose B760 DDR5 for a locked Intel processor or a gaming build that does not need CPU overclocking. The MSI MAG B760 Tomahawk WiFi DDR5 is a sensible candidate family to investigate, provided its current price, BIOS support, and I/O meet your requirements.

Best Intel enthusiast category: Z790 DDR5
Z790 is appropriate for an unlocked processor, CPU overclocking, more high-speed I/O, or a more elaborate storage and expansion layout. Candidate families include the ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-Plus WiFi and MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi.
Do not automatically choose Z790 because the GPU is expensive. The CPU and the rest of the system determine whether the chipset is justified.
DDR4 versus DDR5: check the exact model
LGA1700 boards are sold in both DDR4 and DDR5 versions. Memory cannot be changed from one standard to the other with a BIOS setting. The exact suffix matters: a board with “D4” in its name is a DDR4 model, while a similarly named board may use DDR5.
MSI’s motherboard-selection guide explains why socket and memory support must be checked at the individual-model level. Never buy “B760 Tomahawk” or “Z790-Plus” without confirming the complete product name.

Can you use an RTX 4080 Super on B550 or X570?
Yes. An existing AM4 system with a suitable Ryzen 3000- or 5000-series processor, a working primary PCIe x16 slot, adequate power, and enough case clearance can be a perfectly reasonable home for the RTX 4080 Super.
A B550 or X570 board does not make the GPU unusable. The more important questions are whether the CPU can deliver the desired frame rates, whether the slot is correctly wired, whether the case fits the card, and whether the PSU has the required cables.
Rank #4
- AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000 / Ryzen 8000 / Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs
- Power Design: 14+2+2
- Thermals: VRM and M.2 Thermal Guard
- Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 3x M.2 Slots, USB-C, Sensor Panel Link
For a new build, AM5 is generally the more forward-looking route. For an upgrade, retaining B550 or X570 can save the cost of a new motherboard, DDR5 memory, and sometimes a new CPU.
The motherboard features that actually matter
1. Primary slot wiring
A slot can be physically x16-sized while being electrically x4 or x8. Use the upper CPU-connected slot unless the motherboard manual says otherwise. Check whether installing a second expansion card or certain M.2 drives changes the graphics slot from x16 to x8.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA slot operating at PCIe 4.0 x8 is not automatically a disaster, but it is a configuration to understand rather than discover after the build. The exact motherboard manual is the final authority.
2. M.2 lane sharing
Read the lane diagram before choosing a board with multiple PCIe 5.0 M.2 sockets. Check:
- Whether the primary M.2 socket shares CPU lanes with the graphics slot.
- Whether installing an M.2 drive disables SATA ports.
- Whether secondary full-length slots operate at x4 or x8.
- Which M.2 sockets connect to the CPU and which connect through the chipset.
- Whether populating a specific socket reduces GPU bandwidth.
The number printed on the box is less useful than the actual populated-slot behavior.
3. CPU power delivery
The motherboard’s VRM powers the CPU, not the RTX 4080 Super. A high-end Intel processor under sustained all-core load may justify a board with stronger heatsinks and better thermal behavior. Phase-count marketing alone is not a reliable quality ranking; consider independent thermal testing, BIOS behavior, CPU support, and total connectivity.

Confirm all of the following:
- Card length and thickness for the exact graphics-card model.
- Number of occupied expansion slots.
- Front radiator or fan clearance.
- Side-panel clearance for the power connector.
- Whether the card blocks neighboring PCIe slots.
- Whether bottom headers and front-panel connections remain accessible.
A three- or four-slot card may leave a second PCIe slot technically present but practically unusable for a capture card, sound card, or storage controller.

5. Power-cable routing
Do not sharply bend the high-power connector immediately at the plug, and do not allow the case side panel to press against it. Follow the graphics-card and PSU manufacturer’s installation guidance. A PSU that meets the wattage figure but lacks appropriate independent PCIe cables is not a good match.
6. I/O and networking
Useful mainstream features include 2.5Gb Ethernet, BIOS Flashback, debug LEDs, several fan headers, a front-panel USB-C header, and enough rear USB ports for your peripherals. Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is sufficient for many homes; Wi-Fi 7 is a convenience and future-facing networking feature, not an RTX 4080 Super requirement.
Choose Thunderbolt or USB4 only if you have a real peripheral requirement. Likewise, 10Gb Ethernet is difficult to justify when the rest of the network is limited to 1Gb.

Does the motherboard affect RTX 4080 Super FPS?
Usually, not in the way buyers expect. At 4K, the GPU is often the dominant performance factor. At high-refresh 1080p or 1440p, the CPU and game engine can matter more. A more expensive motherboard does not fix a weak processor or create extra graphics performance.
Resizable BAR is a normal modern-platform feature worth enabling when supported, but it is not a reason by itself to buy an expensive board. Confirm that it is enabled in UEFI and supported by the platform and graphics driver.
Buying checklist
- Choose the CPU first. AM5, LGA1700, or an existing AM4 processor determines the socket and chipset options.
- Match the memory. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. Confirm the exact motherboard variant.
- Verify the primary slot. Look for CPU-connected PCIe x16 operation in the manual.
- Read the lane map. Check what happens when each M.2 and expansion slot is populated.
- Measure the card and case. Use the exact partner-card dimensions and leave room for power-cable routing.
- Match the PSU. Check wattage, quality, separate PCIe cables, and native high-power cable support.
- Choose connectivity deliberately. Count USB ports, examine networking, and confirm front USB-C or USB4 needs.
- Check firmware support. BIOS Flashback is valuable when an older board may need an update for the chosen CPU.
- Compare the complete price. Include memory, a compatible PSU, cooling, and the case—not just the motherboard.
2024 scope and current buying caution
This guide’s recommendations are framed around the 2024 RTX 4080 Super build question. Motherboard availability, prices, BIOS support, and platform value can change substantially afterward. A board released or discounted later should not be described as the “best 2024” choice without separating historical guidance from current buying advice.
When checking a listing, confirm the retailer, country, currency, new or refurbished condition, warranty, board revision, memory type, Wi-Fi inclusion, and return policy. Avoid marketplace listings that merge several revisions or DDR4 and DDR5 versions under one title.

For most new AMD systems, buy a well-reviewed B650 or B650E DDR5 motherboard with Wi-Fi, 2.5Gb Ethernet, BIOS Flashback, a reinforced primary x16 slot, and a clear M.2 lane layout. Pair it with a suitable AM5 gaming CPU such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
For Intel, choose B760 DDR5 with a locked processor or Z790 DDR5 for an unlocked CPU and overclocking. If you already own a capable AM4 system, B550 or X570 may be all you need. In every case, check the exact GPU dimensions, primary-slot wiring, M.2 sharing, PSU cabling, and case clearance before ordering.
