Important: This is a historical 2022 buying guide, not current 2026 shopping advice. The models below were recommended or compared around 2022; prices, availability, and newer alternatives have changed substantially.
The strongest budget-performance choice in the original group was the Gigabyte G5 KC with an RTX 3060. The Acer Nitro 5 was the cheapest acceptable entry point, but its 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD required scrutiny. The MSI GL66 Pulse offered stronger 1080p performance, while the Lenovo Legion 7i was a premium 165Hz laptop rather than a sensible $700–$900 value pick.
A 144Hz display can refresh the image up to 144 times per second, but it does not guarantee 144 frames per second. The laptop must produce those frames, and panel response time, brightness, color coverage, adaptive sync, thermals, and GPU power limits matter just as much as the refresh-rate number.
What “144Hz” means for gaming
A 144Hz screen is most useful when a laptop can render well above 60 frames per second. Competitive games such as Counter-Strike-style shooters, Valorant, Overwatch, Fortnite, Rocket League, and many older games are the best fit. At 144Hz, motion and aiming can look noticeably smoother than at 60Hz, provided the panel has reasonable response behavior.

More demanding games are different. A budget laptop may reach high frame rates in esports titles but fall well below 144fps in modern AAA games at high or ultra settings. Think of “144Hz gaming laptop” as a description of the display’s capability, not a performance promise.
The original source also included a 165Hz laptop, so this guide covers 144Hz and faster high-refresh laptops, rather than only panels with exactly 144Hz.

These configurations come from the original 2022 ranking. Exact specifications varied by retailer and model number, so a product-family name is not enough when buying used, refurbished, or clearance stock.

Best premium high-refresh option: Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 6
The Lenovo Legion 7i was the original article’s top pick, with a Core i9-11980HK, RTX 3080, 32GB of RAM, and a 16-inch 2560×1600 display running at 165Hz.
Its 16:10 screen provides more vertical space than a conventional 16:9 1080p panel, and the higher resolution can make games and desktop work look sharper. The 165Hz refresh rate comfortably exceeds the guide’s 144Hz target.
However, 2560×1600 puts more work on the GPU than 1920×1080. In demanding games, the RTX 3080 may need reduced settings or upscaling to sustain very high frame rates at native resolution. The laptop is also a poor fit for a buyer whose real budget is $700–$900: high-end components bring a heavier chassis, a large charger, more heat, and less convenient portability.
A lower-cost Legion configuration with an RTX 3060 could make more sense for 1080p or moderate-resolution gaming, particularly if it has the better screen, adequate cooling, and 16GB of RAM. The RTX 3080 version is best understood as a premium machine, not the universal best value.

Best value: MSI GL66 Pulse
The MSI GL66 Pulse paired a Core i7-11800H and RTX 3070 with a 1080p 144Hz display and 16GB of RAM. That is a sensible performance match: the RTX 3070 provides considerably more 1080p headroom than RTX 3050-class hardware, while 1080p does not place the same load on the GPU as a high-resolution panel.
This is “value” rather than “cheapest.” It is worth considering when its price is reasonably close to RTX 3060 alternatives and when the exact configuration includes dual-channel memory, adequate storage, and a good-power GPU implementation.
Do not buy it solely because the product name says 144Hz. Check the panel’s brightness, color coverage, response time, and ghosting behavior. Also check whether the listed 16GB is installed as one module or two; dual-channel memory can matter in CPU-limited games. The source’s published numerical score was an editorial judgment, not a standardized independent measurement.
Best budget-performance option: Gigabyte G5 KC
The Gigabyte G5 KC was the most compelling option for a typical 2022 budget buyer when priced favorably. Its listed configuration included:
- Core i5-10500H processor
- RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
- 15.6-inch 1920×1080 144Hz display
- 16GB DDR4 memory
- 512GB SSD
The RTX 3060 was a meaningful step above the RTX 3050 for 1080p gaming. It was better suited to high-refresh esports play and offered more flexibility in heavier games, although CPU-heavy titles could still expose the limits of the older six-core processor.
The important qualification is GPU power. Laptop RTX 3060 performance varied substantially according to wattage, Dynamic Boost behavior, cooling, CPU limits, and whether the laptop routed graphics through a MUX switch or Optimus. Two laptops with the same RTX 3060 name could perform differently.
The G5 KC also represented the typical budget compromise: fan noise, heat, and display quality could be less impressive than the headline specifications. Verify the exact retailer configuration, especially RAM, SSD capacity, screen brightness, color coverage, and maximum graphics power.

Cheapest acceptable option: Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55-53E5
The original ultra-cheap pick used a Core i5-10300H, RTX 3050, 8GB of RAM, 256GB NVMe storage, and a 1080p 144Hz screen. Among 2022 144Hz gaming laptops, “ultra-cheap” was relative; it did not mean inexpensive in every context.
The RTX 3050 made this a viable entry point for esports and lighter games, but it was a significant compromise compared with RTX 3060 systems. A 144Hz panel is of limited value if the GPU cannot sustain high frame rates in the games you play.
Two upgrades should be part of the calculation
- RAM: 8GB is a weak final specification for gaming and multitasking. If the laptop is upgradeable, budget for 16GB. Check whether it has two accessible slots and whether adding a matching module is preferable to replacing the existing one.
- Storage: 256GB fills quickly after Windows, launchers, updates, and a few large games. Prefer 512GB when the price difference is modest. The source described additional expansion options, but compatibility must be confirmed for the exact SKU.
PCWorld’s review of a different 2022 Nitro 5 configuration—Core i5-12500H, RTX 3060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and a 144Hz display—reported reasonable gaming performance, useful ports, a 5.51-pound weight, bulky plastic construction, short battery life, and approximately 66% sRGB coverage. Those findings apply to that tested configuration, not automatically to every Nitro 5.
For that reason, a discounted Nitro 5 with an RTX 3060, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD may be a better purchase than the cheaper RTX 3050 model once upgrade costs are included. See the PCWorld review for the tested configuration.

ASUS TUF F15
The 2022 ASUS TUF F15 offered Core i5-12500H or Core i7-12700H processors, RTX 3050, RTX 3050 Ti, or RTX 3060 graphics, 144Hz 1080p display options, Adaptive-Sync, and a MUX switch in listed configurations. Some versions supported up to 32GB of DDR5 memory.

It could be a strong alternative when discounted below the GL66 or G5 KC, but the official specifications show why screen quality must be checked: relevant 144Hz panels were listed at only 62.5% sRGB and 45% NTSC coverage. A high refresh rate does not guarantee a vibrant or bright display. Check the official specifications for the exact configuration.
Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i
Contemporary budget coverage listed the IdeaPad Gaming 3i 15 with a 12th-generation Core i5 H-series processor and RTX 3050 Ti at a historical price of about $790. It was a practical candidate for buyers prioritizing a newer CPU at the lower end of the market, but the historical price should not be treated as current.

Dell G15 and HP Victus 15
The Dell G15 and HP Victus 15 were also positioned as entry-level gaming alternatives in 2022 coverage. Compare their exact screen, GPU wattage, memory, storage, and cooling configuration rather than assuming the family name identifies one fixed product. Windows Central’s 2022 under-$1,000 roundup provides the historical context.
Acer Swift X
The Acer Swift X was a display-quality alternative, with a 100% sRGB panel in the cited coverage, but its lower-power U-series processor made it a different proposition from a conventional H-series gaming laptop. It suited buyers who valued portability and image quality more than maximum sustained competitive-game performance.

144Hz versus 120Hz, 165Hz, and 240Hz
- 120Hz: Already a substantial improvement over 60Hz and often a sensible choice if the rest of the laptop is better.
- 144Hz versus 165Hz: Close in practical feel. Do not pay a large premium for 165Hz alone unless the panel, GPU, or overall laptop is also better.
- 240Hz: Most relevant to competitive players who can sustain very high frame rates and are sensitive to latency. It is less useful when the GPU regularly produces 80–120fps.
Response time, input latency, adaptive sync, and actual frame rate matter at least as much as the refresh-rate label.
How to choose by historical 2022 budget
Below about $800
Expect RTX 3050-class graphics or other compromises. Prioritize an upgradeable 16GB memory path and preferably 512GB storage. An 8GB/256GB configuration is only attractive if the laptop is substantially cheaper and upgrades are practical.
About $800–$1,000
Prioritize RTX 3060 models, such as the G5 KC or a comparable Nitro 5, TUF, Dell, Lenovo, or Victus configuration. Compare GPU wattage and screen quality, not just the GPU name.
Above $1,000
RTX 3070 or better can provide additional 1080p headroom, but the extra money should also buy a better display, cooling system, memory configuration, storage, or build quality. A premium 165Hz laptop with a high-resolution screen is not automatically better value for a budget buyer.

Checklist before ordering
- Record the exact model and SKU, not just the product family.
- Check the laptop GPU’s maximum graphics power and cooling design.
- Confirm brightness, color coverage, response time, panel type, and adaptive-sync support.
- Prefer 16GB RAM; determine whether it is one module or two and whether it is upgradeable.
- Prefer a 512GB SSD; confirm additional M.2 or 2.5-inch drive support for smaller drives.
- Check for a MUX switch or Advanced Optimus if competitive performance is important.
- Include the cost of RAM and SSD upgrades in the real price.
- Expect gaming to require wall power, fan noise, heat, and a large adapter.
- Verify warranty, return policy, operating-system inclusion, and whether the listing is new, refurbished, or open-box.
What to buy in 2026 instead
Do not use this 2022 ranking as a current-price buying guide. Older models may now be discontinued, refurbished, clearance stock, or marketplace-only. Current manufacturer catalogs have moved to newer generations: HP currently positions Victus as its entry-level gaming line and lists RTX 50-series configurations, while Acer’s current Nitro V 16 range includes RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 systems with 180Hz displays.
For current availability, start with the HP Victus range and Acer Nitro V 16 range, then compare current Lenovo LOQ, ASUS TUF, and other models by exact configuration. Current prices and promotions can change quickly.
