Xbox Cloud Gaming is already available on select Amazon Fire TV devices. Xbox announced the partnership on June 27, 2024, and the Xbox app launched in July 2024—not an upcoming July. You do not need an Xbox console, but you do need supported Fire TV hardware, a compatible controller, a Microsoft account, reliable internet, and a supported Game Pass plan for most games.
What Xbox and Amazon announced
The 2024 announcement brought the Xbox app to Amazon Fire TV, allowing subscribers to stream Xbox games from Microsoft’s servers instead of installing them locally. The original launch targeted the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2023) and Fire TV Stick 4K (2023), with cloud gaming offered to Game Pass Ultimate members in more than 25 countries. The important distinction is that Fire TV acts as a streaming endpoint, not an Xbox console. No console is required, but streaming still depends on your connection, controller, subscription, and the games currently available in the cloud catalog.
Which Fire TV devices work now?
Xbox’s current compatibility list names these Fire TV devices:

Do not assume that every Fire TV Stick, every device with “4K” in its name, or every Fire TV television supports the Xbox app. The 2024 announcement used year-based names for the launch models, while Xbox’s current page uses generation labels. Check the exact model and generation in your Fire TV settings, packaging, or Amazon listing before buying.
Support can also vary by country and Amazon Appstore availability. Use Xbox’s current supported-device page as the final compatibility check.
What you need to play
- A supported Fire TV device: One of the models listed above.
- The Xbox app: Install it from the Amazon Appstore when available in your market.
- A Microsoft account: Sign in with the account connected to your subscription.
- Game Pass: Xbox currently lists Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as cloud-gaming options, although plan benefits and the available catalog differ.
- A compatible controller: The Fire TV remote is not a replacement for a full game controller.
- Reliable internet: Xbox cites 10 Mbps as a minimum in its cloud-gaming FAQ, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and gives 20 Mbps guidance for the best performance on larger-screen devices.
Some free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. For most other cloud games, an active supported Game Pass subscription is required. Xbox also says that select games purchased separately may be streamable, but that does not mean every owned Xbox game is available through the cloud.

How to set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on Fire TV
- Connect a compatible Fire TV device to your television and install any available system updates.
- Open the Amazon Appstore and search for the Xbox app.
- Install and launch the app.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has your supported Game Pass plan or eligible game entitlement.
- Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller with the Fire TV device.
- Choose a cloud-enabled game and start streaming.
The exact Fire TV menu wording can change with software updates, but the essential process is installing the official app, signing in, pairing a controller, and selecting a cloud-supported game.
Which controllers work?
An Xbox Wireless Controller is the simplest recommendation because it uses the familiar Xbox layout and is designed for Xbox games. Xbox’s launch announcement also identified the Xbox Adaptive Controller, PlayStation DualSense, and DualShock 4 as compatible examples. Check Xbox’s controller guidance before relying on a third-party Bluetooth controller.
- Xbox Wireless Controller: The safest general-purpose choice, but it adds to the cost if you do not already own one.
- DualSense or DualShock 4: Useful if you already own one, although games may still display Xbox button prompts.
- Xbox Adaptive Controller: Suitable for supported accessibility setups, but check the complete accessory configuration you need.
- Third-party Bluetooth controllers: May work, but compatibility is not universal.
What games can you play?
The original announcement highlighted games such as Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Starfield, Forza Horizon 5, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76. Those were launch-era examples, not a permanent promise about the current catalog.

Game availability changes by region, plan, platform, and time. A game being included in Game Pass does not automatically mean it is cloud-playable on Fire TV. Check the live Xbox cloud library and device information before subscribing or buying hardware for a particular game.
Performance expectations
Cloud gaming is convenient, but it is not the same as running a game locally on an Xbox Series X|S. The video is streamed from Microsoft’s servers, so image quality and input response depend on your connection, Wi-Fi congestion, router placement, ISP routing, location, and the distance to the service.
Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and publishes a 10 Mbps minimum figure in its broader cloud-gaming FAQ. Its TV guidance also cites 20 Mbps for best performance on larger-screen devices. These are guidance figures, not guarantees of lag-free play.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
For better results, connect the Fire TV through a strong 5 GHz signal, reduce the distance between the router and television, pause large downloads and high-bandwidth streaming elsewhere, and test the connection at the television rather than beside the router. Ethernet can help when the hardware and network setup support it, but it cannot eliminate latency caused elsewhere.
Turn-based games, slower single-player titles, and casual games are generally more forgiving of delay than competitive shooters, fighting games, or rhythm games. Xbox also warns that streamed games may have limitations involving resolution, audio output, cloud-save storage, companion apps, and accessories.

If you cannot find the app, work through these checks:

- Confirm that your Fire TV model and generation appear on Xbox’s supported list.
- Check the country and region associated with your Amazon account.
- Install Fire TV software updates and restart the device.
- Restart your router and check whether the Amazon Appstore is connected normally.
- Verify that the device is using the intended Amazon account.
- Check whether Xbox app availability is limited in your market.
Do not treat sideloading an unofficial APK as the default solution. If the device is unsupported or the app is unavailable in your region, use Xbox Cloud Gaming through another officially supported device instead.
If the controller will not pair
Make sure the controller is not still connected to another device, then restart both the controller and Fire TV. Remove unused Bluetooth devices, move the controller closer to the Fire TV, and check its firmware if the manufacturer provides an update. If a third-party controller fails, test with a controller listed in Xbox’s compatibility guidance before concluding that the Fire TV app is broken.
Is Fire TV cloud gaming worth it?
It makes the most sense if you already own a compatible Fire TV device, already pay for Game Pass, have a reliable 5 GHz network, and mainly want occasional gaming without buying a console. It can also be a convenient way to play on a television where portability and low hardware commitment matter more than maximum performance.

A Fire TV device is not a substitute for local installation, and “no console required” does not mean “no additional cost.”
Think about the total setup cost
- Lowest-cost path: An existing supported Fire TV device, an existing compatible controller, and a suitable subscription.
- New-user path: Fire TV hardware, a controller, a Game Pass plan, and an existing television and internet connection.
- Console path: More hardware expense, but local installation, more consistent latency, and access to games that are not cloud-playable.
The original 2024 announcement listed launch prices of $49.99 for the Fire TV Stick 4K and $59.99 for the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Those were announcement prices, not current 2026 retail prices, so do not use them as a present-day buying guide. Check Amazon’s current Fire TV listings, Xbox’s current Game Pass page, and the official Xbox controller page for live prices.
The Bottom Line
Xbox Cloud Gaming did launch on select Fire TV devices in July 2024, and it remains a practical console-free option—but only on specific supported models. Verify the Fire TV generation first, then account for the controller, Game Pass plan, changing cloud catalog, and the quality of your internet connection.
