Verdict: The Asus ROG Strix G15 G512LI remains a capable older 1080p gaming laptop, but it is a cautious used-buy rather than a strong 2026 recommendation. Its comfortable keyboard, six-core Core i7 processor and useful upgrade options are appealing; its aging GTX 1650 Ti, dim low-gamut display, missing webcam, small battery and likely wear are not. Buy it only when it is substantially cheaper than a newer entry-level gaming laptop and the individual unit passes a careful inspection.
What exactly is the G512LI?
“ROG Strix G15” is a family name, not one globally identical laptop. The G512LI suffix commonly identifies configurations with a mobile Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti, while related models such as the G512LU, G512LV and G512LW commonly use the GTX 1660 Ti, RTX 2060 and RTX 2070-class graphics respectively. Those are materially different gaming machines.
Confirm the complete model code, processor, graphics card, memory, storage and display before buying. ASUS’s family listings show that specifications and availability vary by market and configuration: ASUS ROG Strix G15 listings.
Quick verdict
- Best for: inexpensive used 1080p gaming, esports, older AAA games, schoolwork and general use.
- Not for: modern ultra-quality gaming, ray tracing, long battery life, color-sensitive work or buyers who need a built-in webcam.
- Main strength: comfortable keyboard, adequate CPU performance and good upgrade potential.
- Main weakness: the GTX 1650 Ti and disappointing 144Hz screen limit the experience.
- Recommended minimum: 16GB dual-channel RAM, a healthy battery and the correct charger.
Tested configurations are not identical
The Laptop Mag review unit used the familiar budget configuration: a Core i7-10750H, GTX 1650 Ti with 4GB VRAM, 8GB RAM, a 512GB SSD and a 15.6-inch 1080p 144Hz display. It weighed 5.3 pounds, or about 2.4kg, and launched at approximately $999.

Notebookcheck tested a closely related G512LI with the same CPU and GPU class, but with 16GB dual-channel RAM and a 512GB Intel SSD. Its listed weight was about 2.3kg. This memory difference matters: an 8GB single-module system can perform worse in some games and feels less comfortable with modern Windows multitasking than a 16GB dual-channel machine.

ASUS may source components such as memory, SSDs and display panels from different suppliers. Treat the figures below as evidence from tested units, not guaranteed specifications for every G512LI.
Design, keyboard and ports
The G15 has an unmistakably gaming-oriented design, with angular lines, pink or “Electro Punk” accents on applicable versions and RGB lighting that can include a light bar. At roughly 14.2 × 10.8 × 1 inches and 5.3 pounds, it is portable enough for school or travel between rooms, but it is not an ultraportable. The approximately 25.8mm thickness leaves room for useful cooling hardware, at the cost of bulk.

The keyboard is one of the laptop’s strongest features. Laptop Mag found the keys punchy and comfortable and recorded 82 words per minute in its typing test. It works well for both gaming and ordinary writing. Exact layouts vary by region, and some versions omit a conventional number pad, so inspect photographs carefully.
The touchpad is serviceable but can show fingerprints, and the aggressive styling will not suit everyone. More importantly, there is no built-in webcam. Remote classes, video calls, interviews and streaming require an external USB camera. The absence also means you should not expect an integrated Windows Hello camera.
Port selection is useful for a gaming system. Notebookcheck lists three USB-A ports, one USB-C port with DisplayPort capability in the tested configuration, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, a 3.5mm audio combo jack, a Kensington lock, Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 and Bluetooth 5.1. Laptop Mag places the power connector, HDMI and USB-C toward the rear, with USB-A ports and audio on the left. Exact capabilities can vary, so verify the particular machine against ASUS’s G512LI support material.
The 144Hz display is the biggest disappointment
The standard tested panel is a 15.6-inch 1920×1080 IPS display with a 144Hz refresh rate. That refresh rate sounds ideal for gaming, but refresh rate is only one part of display quality. Independent measurements found modest brightness, weak color coverage, mediocre contrast and slow pixel response.

In practical terms, the screen is adequate for ordinary gaming indoors, but it looks muted compared with a good modern IPS panel. Limited gamut makes colors less vivid, the brightness is underwhelming in bright rooms and the measured response times can produce noticeable ghosting. The panel may not feel as sharp in motion as its 144Hz label suggests.
It is a poor choice for photo editing, color-sensitive creative work or anyone expecting HDR-like viewing. An external monitor with strong sRGB coverage and genuinely fast response can substantially improve the experience. Do not assume that every G512LI uses exactly this panel: other G512 variants offered higher-refresh options, and panel suppliers can differ by market.
Performance: capable CPU, aging GPU
Core i7-10750H
The Core i7-10750H is a six-core, 12-thread Comet Lake-H processor with a listed boost clock of up to 5GHz. It remains perfectly adequate for office work, browsing, coding, multitasking, older CPU-limited games and light content creation. Laptop Mag reported that its unit handled 40 Chrome tabs and five 1080p YouTube videos.

Its historical results included a Geekbench 4.3 score of 21,182, a 4K-to-1080p HandBrake conversion time of 10:28 and a 5,466 PCMark 10 score in Notebookcheck’s 16GB configuration. The processor is not the principal reason to reject this laptop. The graphics card, battery and display are more consequential.

The mobile GTX 1650 Ti is an entry-level graphics processor with 4GB of VRAM. It is still useful for esports games, older AAA releases and 1080p gaming with sensible settings, but it lacks the performance headroom and newer features of RTX-class hardware.

These are historical independent-review measurements, not promises for a used laptop in 2026. Results change with drivers, BIOS settings, Armoury Crate performance profiles, game patches, RAM configuration, background processes, dust and thermal condition. The practical expectation is roughly 45–60fps in many older or appropriately tuned games, with lower results in demanding modern releases.
The 144Hz panel does not mean the GTX 1650 Ti can drive demanding games at 144fps. Competitive or lightweight esports titles may take better advantage of the refresh rate; modern AAA games generally will not. Notebookcheck’s comparisons estimated approximately 45% more graphics performance from a GTX 1660 Ti, about 60% more from an RTX 2060 and roughly 110% more from an RTX 2070 Super in the relevant configurations: Notebookcheck’s G512LI testing.
Storage and RAM
The 512GB SSD is usable but can fill quickly once several large games are installed. Laptop Mag recorded approximately 130MB/s in its 4.97GB file-copy test, below its budget-laptop comparison average.

Eight gigabytes of RAM is the weakest version to buy today. Upgrade it to at least 16GB dual-channel if the laptop is otherwise healthy. That upgrade can improve multitasking and remove memory-related performance limitations, but do not spend so much on upgrades that the total cost approaches a newer machine.
Thermals and fan noise
The G512LI’s external temperatures were reasonably controlled in testing, especially around the palm rest, but “cool” does not mean “quiet.” Notebookcheck recorded gaming hot spots of approximately 46.2°C and 53.6°C in different areas and still noted audible fans, including in Silent mode. Laptop Mag measured about 33°C at the keyboard center during video playback, 25°C at the touchpad, approximately 41°C on the underside and up to about 47°C at the hottest underside point.
This is a mixed result: normal hand-contact areas can remain comfortable while the underside and rear exhaust areas become hot. An older unit may run worse because of dust, degraded thermal compound or worn fans. During a used-machine test, listen for grinding or rattling, watch for crashes and abnormal throttling, and confirm that performance profiles in Armoury Crate work correctly.
Battery life is short
The 48Wh battery is small for a 15.6-inch gaming laptop. Notebookcheck measured 4 hours 31 minutes in its Wi-Fi test, 1 hour 21 minutes under maximum load and about 1.5 hours for a full recharge. Laptop Mag measured 5 hours 11 minutes under its Wi-Fi procedure at 150 nits.

Together they suggest that the G512LI is mainly a plug-in gaming system that can handle short periods away from an outlet. Gaming runtime will be substantially shorter, and a used battery may deliver considerably less than either review result. Confirm that the proper charger is included; gaming performance depends on the appropriate power adapter.

Upgradeability is a genuine advantage
Notebookcheck’s tested unit had two SODIMM memory slots and three M.2 2280 storage positions, making the laptop unusually flexible for its class. However, do not assume every regional motherboard has exactly the same storage layout. Some bays may already be occupied, a mounting screw or standoff may be missing, and a used seller may have altered the original configuration.
Recommended upgrade order:
- Memory: move an 8GB system to at least 16GB dual-channel, ideally using a matched kit.
- Storage: add or replace an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD after confirming the available bay and mounting hardware.
- Battery: check health before investing in other upgrades.
- Cooling: clean vents and fans first; do not immediately assume a repaste is necessary.
- Display: use an external monitor if the internal panel is the main problem.
Opening an older chassis can damage clips, cables or screws and may affect any remaining warranty. Use model-specific documentation and ASUS’s support portal for manuals, BIOS and drivers: ASUS ROG Strix manuals. Windows 11 support material exists for G512LI, but software support does not turn the GTX 1650 Ti into modern gaming hardware.
G512LI versus higher-spec G512 models
If the price difference is modest, a G512LU, G512LV or G512LW can be a much better gaming purchase because the GPU is the main performance limiter. A GTX 1660 Ti-class G512LU offers a substantial step up, while RTX 2060-class and RTX 2070-class variants provide more headroom and access to RTX features.

Still, compare the complete specification rather than buying by suffix alone. CPU, RAM, panel, storage, keyboard layout and regional features can vary. A higher-GPU model with a damaged battery or poor screen may not be a better deal than a healthy G512LI.
What to check before buying a used G512LI
- Confirm the complete model code from the underside label or BIOS.
- Verify the GPU in Windows Device Manager or a trusted hardware utility.
- Check whether memory is 8GB, 16GB or more and whether it runs in dual-channel mode.
- Inspect the display for dead pixels, backlight bleed, uneven brightness and ghosting.
- Test all USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, audio and Ethernet ports.
- Generate a Windows battery report or use ASUS diagnostics to check battery health.
- Run a short CPU/GPU load test and watch for crashes, severe throttling or fan grinding.
- Confirm that the charger is genuine and correctly rated.
- Check SSD health and remaining capacity.
- Look for missing screws, warped panels, damaged hinges and blocked vents.
- Test Silent, Performance and Turbo-type profiles where supported.
- Prefer a seller offering a return window, since panel defects and battery wear may not appear in listing photographs.
Should you buy the Asus ROG Strix G15 G512LI in 2026?
Buy it when the price is clearly below comparable newer gaming laptops, the machine is in good condition and you mainly want inexpensive 1080p gaming. A 16GB unit with a healthy battery, clean cooling system, original charger and return option is the safest version.
Be cautious when the laptop is sold with 8GB RAM, a worn battery or an unclear specification. Add the cost of RAM, storage, a webcam, a monitor or a replacement battery before deciding. If that total approaches the cost of a newer laptop, replacing the machine is usually the better value.
Avoid it when the asking price is close to a newer RTX 3050, RTX 4050 or comparable current gaming laptop; when you want modern ray tracing or high-refresh AAA gaming; when accurate color matters; or when you need long unplugged battery life and an integrated webcam. The original approximately $999 launch price is historical context, not a 2026 fair-market target. Current value depends on the buyer’s market, condition and competing machines.
Final verdict
The Asus ROG Strix G15 G512LI was a reasonable budget gaming laptop at launch and remains serviceable as a cheap used 1080p machine. Its i7-10750H, keyboard, ports and upgradeability still hold up. Its GTX 1650 Ti, weak 144Hz panel, 48Wh battery, audible fans, hollow speakers and absent webcam do not.
Buy only at a clear discount and after inspecting the exact unit. If a higher-GPU G512 variant or newer gaming laptop costs only a little more, choose that instead.
