If New World: Aeternum shows “VOIP connection failed,” go to Settings → Social → Voice Chat Mode, select Disabled, then fully restart the game. This player-reported workaround removes the error for some players, but it also disables proximity, world, and other in-game voice communication.
It is not a confirmed permanent repair. If you need voice chat, re-enable it after checking your microphone, speaker, channel, and network settings.
Why New World VOIP fails
The message means the game is not connecting correctly to its in-game voice service. It does not necessarily mean your headset is defective, Steam voice chat is broken, Windows cannot detect your microphone, you have been voice-banned, or your installation is corrupted.
Players have reported headsets working normally in Windows and Steam while New World displays the VOIP error and leaves the in-game microphone selector unavailable. Official support documentation covers general sound, connectivity, Easy Anti-Cheat, and game-file problems, but does not identify a confirmed root cause or provide a dedicated VOIP repair procedure.

Possible causes include the game’s VOIP service, device selection, channel routing, platform party chat, firewall or security software, and broader connectivity problems.
The fastest workaround: disable Voice Chat Mode
- Open Settings.
- Open Social.
- Set Voice Chat Mode to Disabled.
- Fully close and restart New World.
Players reported this removing “VOIP connection failed” in October 2024 (Steam discussion; related report). The setting may be worded slightly differently in another build or platform version, so look for the voice-chat enable/disable control under Social.
This works around the symptom by turning off the feature. It does not establish that the underlying connection problem has been fixed.
How to restore proximity or world voice chat
- Return to Settings → Social.
- Choose the desired voice mode instead of Disabled.
- Check whether the menu separates Proximity/World and Party/Group voice.
- Confirm the intended microphone and speaker/output device.
- Check voice-chat receive volume and microphone volume.
- Apply the setting and restart the game if it does not take effect immediately.
- Test with a nearby player or in the channel you intend to use.
Re-enabling voice chat may not permanently resolve the problem. The available evidence supports disabling the feature as a workaround, not a reliable repair sequence.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“VOIP connection failed” appears
Use the disable-and-restart workaround first. If you need voice chat, re-enable it after checking devices and channels. If the error returns immediately, continue with the platform and network checks below rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
The microphone is missing or greyed out
- Connect or power on the headset before launching the game.
- In Windows, set the intended microphone as the default input device.
- Allow microphone access for desktop applications in Windows privacy settings.
- Temporarily disconnect unused microphones, webcams, virtual audio devices, and controller headsets.
- Close applications that might be capturing the microphone.
- Restart New World, then check Settings → Social again.
A greyed-out selector has been reported by players, but its cause is not confirmed by official support. One Reddit report says restoring Social settings to their defaults restored input selection; treat that as an unverified player workaround, not an official fix (Reddit report).
You can hear the game but not other players
- Make sure voice chat is enabled and the selected mode matches the channel you expect to hear.
- Raise voice-chat receive volume separately from master volume.
- Confirm the game is sending audio to the intended headset rather than a monitor or another output.
- Check Windows’ per-app volume mixer.
- Leave an Xbox or PlayStation party temporarily.
- Test while another player is actually transmitting and, for proximity chat, is close enough to be heard.
New World’s official sound guidance recommends checking in-game volume and the outbound audio source. A player report also specifically recommends checking the voice-chat speaker and receive volume (official sound troubleshooting; community report).

You can speak but cannot hear anyone
- Confirm the correct output device is selected in Windows and in the game.
- Raise voice-chat receive volume.
- Check your headset’s physical game/chat balance control.
- Test wired headphones if you are using Bluetooth. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that Bluetooth is incompatible.
- Leave any console or platform party channel that may be taking priority.
- Disable voice chat, restart, and test again.
World or proximity chat stops working after joining a party
In-game party voice, world voice, proximity voice, and Xbox or PlayStation party chat may be separate channels. A 2025 Steam report described world VOIP failing after entering an in-game party, so treat party routing as an edge case rather than a universal bug (Steam discussion).

For a clean test:
- Leave the in-game party.
- Leave Xbox Party Chat or PlayStation Party Chat.
- Set the game to World, Proximity, or the equivalent available mode.
- Test with a nearby player.
- Rejoin the party and test party voice separately.
Voice works in Steam or Discord but not in New World
That usually narrows the problem to the game’s device selection, channel routing, permissions, VOIP connection, or platform interaction. It does not prove the headset is faulty. Connect the intended device before launching the game, make it the operating system default, close competing audio software, and restart New World.
PC and Steam checks
Verify Windows permissions and devices
Confirm that Windows detects the microphone and that desktop applications are allowed to use it. Set one clear default input and output device, then temporarily remove unused audio devices. If you switch from speakers to a headset after launching the game, restart the game before retesting.
Verify the game files
- Close New World.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties.
- Use Verify integrity of game files.
- Relaunch and test voice chat.
File verification is an official general troubleshooting step for connection, EAC, launch, and performance problems. There is no evidence that it specifically repairs the VOIP service, so use it as an integrity check rather than the primary voice-chat fix (connectivity guidance; EAC guidance; launch guidance).
Check firewall and security software
Make sure Windows Firewall or security software is not blocking the game. A Steam user reported resolving a related problem by allowing the game through Windows 11 Firewall, but that is community advice—not evidence that a firewall causes every VOIP failure.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection or weaken firewall security as a first step. Also avoid blindly forwarding ports. New World’s official EAC article lists ports 18887–18903 for EAC and network connection failures; it does not identify them as a confirmed VOIP repair.
Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting
First leave Xbox Party Chat and test New World’s own voice channel. This distinguishes platform chat routing from game VOIP.
For broader connection problems, restart the game and console, test the network connection, try another profile, and follow the official account and local-save resynchronization steps if necessary. These checks target general connectivity, not a confirmed VOIP-only fault. Check Xbox service status as well (official connectivity checklist).

PlayStation 5 troubleshooting
Leave PlayStation Party Chat, confirm the headset is the active input and output device, and test New World voice chat separately. Check PSN status, restart the console, and verify network credentials and security settings if broader connectivity is also affected. These are general network checks rather than a confirmed VOIP-specific fix; see the official PlayStation connectivity guidance.

Check the connection only after local voice settings
If other online features are unstable, follow New World’s general network checklist:
- Stop downloads and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Install pending Windows or platform updates.
- Restart the modem and router: unplug them, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect, and wait for them to boot.
- Use a wired connection where possible.
- Check Xbox, PlayStation, or Steam service status as relevant.
A network problem can produce symptoms that look like a voice problem. Conversely, a stable game connection does not rule out a separate VOIP-service or channel issue.
New players: the claimed three-hour restriction
An older third-party guide claims VOIP is disabled during the first three hours after character creation (Game8). Because that information may be version- or platform-dependent, do not treat it as a current universal rule. Check the current game UI for an explicit restriction or warning before assuming the timer is the cause.

- Do not assume the headset is defective because Steam or Windows voice works.
- Do not reinstall the entire game before testing Settings → Social → Voice Chat Mode → Disabled.
- Do not blindly forward ports specifically for VOIP.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
- Do not treat Reddit or Steam reports as official confirmation of a root cause.
- Do not mistake Discord, Xbox Party Chat, or PlayStation Party Chat for a repair to New World proximity chat.
Fallback communication options
Discord, Xbox Party Chat, PlayStation Party Chat, text chat, company chat, faction chat, group chat, or raid chat can keep a group coordinated while New World VOIP is unavailable. These alternatives do not restore proximity chat with nearby strangers.
When to contact support
If disabling voice chat does not remove the error, or voice returns only temporarily, document the case before contacting support. Include:
- Platform and region.
- Date and time of the failure.
- Exact error text.
- Whether proximity, world, party, or all VOIP is affected.
- Headset and controller model.
- Whether Windows, Steam, Xbox, or PlayStation chat works.
- Whether disabling Voice Chat Mode changes the behavior.
- Screenshots or a short recording if relevant.
This information helps separate a microphone-selection problem from output routing, party-channel behavior, a broader connection failure, or a possible service-side issue.
