Steam’s “An error occurred while launching this game: Game already running” message does not necessarily mean a visible game window is open. Usually, a crashed game process, publisher launcher, anti-cheat component, or stale Steam state is still blocking the launch.
The fastest safe fix is to exit Steam completely, end the affected game and clearly related processes in Task Manager, reopen Steam, and try again. If the error returns, restart Windows and verify the game’s files.

Try this 60-second fix first
- In Steam, select Steam > Exit. Closing the window may only minimize Steam to the notification area.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Windows Task Manager.
- If Task Manager opens in its compact view, select More details.
- In Processes, look for the game, its publisher launcher, and any clearly related crash reporter or anti-cheat process.
- Also check the Details tab, where the game’s actual executable name may be easier to identify.
- Select only the relevant process and choose End task.
- Reopen Steam and launch the game once.
Steam identifies an incorrectly closed, silently crashed, or unresponsive game as a common reason for this error. It also notes that the game may be running under another operating-system user account. Steam’s official troubleshooting article explains these causes.
Do not terminate unfamiliar Windows processes just because they appear in Task Manager. In particular, do not randomly end svchost.exe, System, csrss.exe, explorer.exe, or unknown services. If you cannot confidently identify the stuck process, restart the computer instead.

Restart Windows when Steam still says the game is running
A full restart is the safest next step when no game process is visible, Task Manager cannot close it, Steam is unresponsive, or a launcher or anti-cheat process keeps returning. Restarting clears many orphaned processes and resets Steam’s client state.
It will not repair damaged game files, a broken launcher installation, incompatible drivers, or a failed anti-cheat setup. If the error returns after the restart, continue with the steps below rather than repeatedly clicking Play.
Verify the affected game’s files
- Open Steam’s Library.
- Right-click the affected game, or open its library page and select the gear icon.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then try launching the game again.
The scan can take several minutes. Steam may report that one or more files failed verification; according to Steam’s file-verification guidance, this can be normal when local configuration files are not intended to be replaced.

Verification can reacquire damaged or missing installation files, but it does not automatically repair a publisher launcher, graphics driver, save data, mods, account authentication, or every anti-cheat problem. Avoid verifying several games at once or running the scan alongside unusually intensive disk activity.
Check publisher launchers
Some Steam games also require a separate client, such as EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, Epic Games Launcher, or Battle.net. This is conditional: many Steam games do not use an external launcher.

- Close the publisher launcher completely.
- If it is stuck, end only its clearly identifiable processes.
- Open it directly, sign in, and allow pending updates to finish.
- Launch the game through Steam unless the publisher specifically says otherwise.
- Do not press Play in Steam and the external launcher repeatedly at the same time.
If only one game is affected and its launcher produces a separate error, follow that launcher’s or publisher’s support instructions. The Steam message may be a symptom of a failed handoff rather than a Steam client fault.
Repair anti-cheat and prerequisite installers
Games may depend on Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, another publisher anti-cheat service, DirectX, Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, PhysX, or other bundled runtimes. A blocked or canceled prerequisite installer can prevent a clean launch and leave Steam reporting a misleading running state. Steam documents these secondary installers and launch checks here.

Do not download replacement anti-cheat files from random websites, and do not permanently disable anti-cheat as a generic fix. Multiplayer games may refuse to run or restrict online play without it.
Only approve an administrator prompt when the repair utility is located in the legitimate game installation and clearly belongs to the game’s publisher or anti-cheat vendor.

Check for another Windows user account
On a shared PC, another Windows account may still be running the game. Steam specifically lists this as a possible cause of the “app already running” error.

- Sign out of other Windows users if possible.
- In Task Manager, check whether processes belong to another session or user.
- Restart Windows if the other account cannot be reached.
- Do not launch a second copy under your current account before clearing the first session.
Remove launch options, mods, and injected files
A failed launch caused by a mod or custom configuration can sometimes be followed by the same “already running” message. Temporarily isolate those changes:
- Open Properties > General > Launch Options and remove temporary commands.
- Disable mod managers, ReShade, DLL injectors, custom executables, and other modifications.
- Restore the game’s original executable.
- Back up configuration and save files before renaming or removing them.
- Verify the files again.
- Reintroduce modifications one at a time after the unmodified game launches successfully.
Do not delete saves without a backup. Save locations and cloud-synchronization behavior vary by game.
Close overlays and non-essential utilities
Overlays, recording tools, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, input remappers, overclocking software, mod tools, and aggressive security software can interfere with launchers or anti-cheat.
- Close non-essential overlays and utilities.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game.
- If it works, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict.
Do not permanently uninstall or disable antivirus protection as a general solution. If a security product is blocking the game, follow its vendor’s instructions for a narrowly scoped exception. Steam’s general launch guide includes conflicting software as a diagnostic category.

Update Windows, drivers, and the game
Install pending Windows and game updates, and update graphics drivers from your GPU or computer manufacturer. Driver updates are most relevant when the game starts and immediately crashes; they are less likely to be the cause when Steam only has a stale running flag.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back may be more appropriate than installing the newest release. Also check whether the external launcher has its own update or whether the game’s store page lists requirements such as Secure Boot or TPM 2.0. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying the game’s executable directly for some third-party games:
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Locate the main
.exefile. - Double-click it once.
- Record any more specific Windows, launcher, anti-cheat, or missing-runtime error.
Direct launch may bypass Steam features, launch arguments, cloud behavior, or required authentication, and some games will refuse to start outside Steam. If it works directly but not through Steam, investigate Steam’s launch configuration, overlay, or client state. Do not permanently enable Run this program as administrator as a routine fix; mismatched privilege levels can create additional launcher and overlay problems.

taskkill /F /IM actual-game-executable.exeReplace the filename with the game’s real executable name. This is not a universal Steam command, and using the wrong name may do nothing or close an unrelated program. Task Manager or a full restart is safer for most readers.
Linux, macOS, and Steam Deck
The Windows Task Manager procedure does not apply universally. On Linux or Steam Deck, use the desktop system monitor or a terminal to find and close the remaining game process, then restart Steam or the device if necessary. Check the title’s developer support page and Proton compatibility reports before changing Proton versions.
On macOS, use the system’s process-management tools and restart Steam or the Mac when a process cannot be closed. Steam’s general launch troubleshooting guide separates operating-system-specific checks, including updates, graphics support, file integrity, conflicting software, and compatibility.

When to contact the developer
Contact the game’s developer or publisher when the problem affects only that title and persists after clearing processes, restarting Windows, verifying files, and removing temporary mods or launch options. Escalate sooner if the game uses a publisher launcher or anti-cheat, crashes immediately with a title-specific error, or the issue began after a game update.
Include the exact error, when it began, whether other Steam games launch, the launcher or anti-cheat involved, and any logs or error codes the game provides. Reinstalling should be a last resort: it consumes time and bandwidth and may not remove user configuration, launcher data, driver problems, or account issues.
Steam’s broader reset procedures and offline mode are not universal cures. Offline mode requires prior setup and may not work for games requiring an active connection or external launcher; see Steam’s offline-mode limitations.
