Yes—you can play most PC games on an Android phone, but in the best setup the game still runs on your Windows PC. Your phone receives a compressed video stream and sends controller, keyboard, mouse, or touch input back to the computer.
For the easiest Steam-only setup, use Steam Link. For games from Steam, Epic Games, Xbox, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, emulators, and other Windows applications, use Moonlight on Android with Sunshine on the PC. You can make streaming feel smooth and responsive, but literal zero latency is impossible.
What you need
- A gaming PC or laptop capable of running the game.
- An Android phone with hardware H.264 or HEVC video decoding. Newer hardware is preferable for high resolutions and refresh rates.
- A reliable wireless router. Connect the gaming PC to it with Ethernet whenever possible.
- A USB-C or Bluetooth controller. A physical controller is usually much better than on-screen controls.
- Either Steam Link, or Moonlight paired with Sunshine.
The normal local-streaming path looks like this:
Gaming PC running the game → home network → Moonlight or Steam Link on AndroidStreaming is different from running a PC game directly on Android. With streaming, the phone supplies the screen and controls while the PC supplies the game’s CPU, GPU, storage, and Windows environment.
Choose the right method

The easiest setup: Steam Link
Steam Link is the best starting point for beginners with a Steam-focused library. Valve describes it as real-time video and audio streaming: the game runs on the computer while video, audio, and input travel between the PC and Android device.

Steam Link setup
- Install the official Steam Link app on your Android phone.
- Turn on the PC, open Steam, and sign in to the relevant Steam account.
- Connect the phone and PC to the same home network.
- Open Steam Link and select the computer it discovers.
- Enter the pairing code shown on the phone into Steam.
- Run Steam Link’s network test.
- Launch a game through Steam Link or Big Picture mode.
Use the current Steam support information and the app listing for the phone’s exact minimum Android requirement, because platform requirements and interface labels can change.
Steam Link strengths and limits
- Strengths: quick pairing, official Valve support, strong Steam integration, and convenient local multiplayer.
- Limits: non-Steam games can require extra work, and Steam Link offers fewer advanced host and video-tuning options than Moonlight.
The most flexible setup: Moonlight and Sunshine
Moonlight is the Android client; Sunshine is the streaming host installed on the PC. Sunshine supports hardware encoding on modern AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA graphics hardware, while Moonlight can stream games and desktop applications.
Consult the Moonlight setup guide and current Sunshine documentation for hardware and operating-system details. The documented baseline includes Windows 10 or 11 and modern AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel GPUs. macOS 12 or newer is listed as experimental, while supported Linux distributions include versions such as Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04, and Fedora 38 or newer. Hardware encoder quality and driver support still vary between systems.

- Download Sunshine from its official releases or documentation page.
- Install and launch Sunshine on the gaming PC.
- Open
https://localhost:47990/in a browser. The local interface may show a certificate warning because it uses a self-signed certificate. - Create the Sunshine username and password.
- Allow Sunshine through Windows Firewall when prompted.
- Reboot if Sunshine requests it, particularly if controller emulation does not work correctly.
2. Install Moonlight on Android
Install the official Moonlight Android client. It is free and open source. Moonlight’s documentation lists Android 4.1 or newer as a client minimum, but minimum compatibility does not guarantee smooth high-resolution streaming. A recent phone with hardware video decoding is a much safer choice; Android 8 or newer is preferable if you need keyboard and mouse support.
3. Pair the phone with the PC
- Put both devices on the same home network.
- Open Moonlight and select the discovered PC.
- Moonlight will display a PIN.
- Enter the PIN in Sunshine’s pairing interface.
- Start with a local-network test. Do not begin with internet access, which introduces additional NAT, firewall, and upload-bandwidth variables.
4. Launch a game
Sunshine normally provides shortcuts for Steam and remote desktop. Select Steam, Big Picture, or the relevant shortcut in Moonlight. If a game or launcher is missing, add its executable or launcher manually in Sunshine’s Applications section.

Games may still fail because of anti-cheat, DRM, launchers, controller handling, or graphics configuration. Streaming support does not mean that every Windows game will work automatically.
5. Start with conservative stream settings
Use these as a stable starting point:
- 720p or 1080p resolution.
- 60 frames per second.
- H.264 if codec compatibility is uncertain.
- A moderate bitrate.
- Hardware decoding enabled on the phone.
- V-sync enabled initially.
After the stream is stable, test HEVC for improved image quality at a similar bitrate. Try AV1 only if both Sunshine’s host hardware and the Android phone can encode and decode it efficiently. HDR requires compatible host hardware, game, phone, display, and configuration, so troubleshoot standard SDR streaming first. Moonlight’s app listing documents support for H.264, HEVC, AV1, and HDR under suitable conditions.

How to reduce lag, stutter, and dropped frames
Use the best network layout
Gaming PC — Ethernet — Router — 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi — Android phoneMoonlight recommends a strong wireless router, 5 GHz Wi-Fi or better for the client, and Ethernet from the host PC to the router. Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 can help capacity, but neither guarantees low latency. Weak signal, congested channels, mesh-node handoffs, interference, bufferbloat, walls, and other traffic can still cause problems.
Optimization checklist
- Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet.
- Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi instead of 2.4 GHz where signal quality permits.
- Stay near the access point and avoid a congested mesh repeater.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, and video streaming on the network.
- Close unnecessary recording, browser, and overlay software on the PC.
- Match the stream’s resolution and frame rate to the phone display when practical.
- Cap the game at a stable 60 FPS before testing 90 or 120 FPS.
- Disable HDR while diagnosing problems.
- Keep the phone cool; remove a thick case if it becomes hot and throttles.
- Use a USB controller if Bluetooth input feels inconsistent.
Choose bitrate gradually
There is no universal ideal bitrate. A lower bitrate is more tolerant of network spikes but produces more compression. A higher bitrate improves image quality but needs more stable bandwidth and can increase buffering when the network is overloaded.
Begin at a moderate value for 720p or 1080p at 60 FPS. Increase it until compression artifacts are acceptable, then reduce it slightly if stutters appear. A stable 1080p/60 stream is usually preferable to a stuttering 1440p or 4K stream on a small phone display. Moonlight can support much higher resolutions and refresh rates on suitable hardware, but 4K/120 HDR is not a realistic target for most phones and ordinary home networks.

Why zero lag is impossible
Every streamed game has a latency chain:
- Controller or touch-input delay.
- Network transmission to the PC.
- Game simulation and rendering.
- Video encoding on the PC.
- Network transmission back to the phone.
- Video decoding on the phone.
- Display response time.
A good setup can feel smooth and responsive, especially in single-player adventures, role-playing games, strategy games, and turn-based titles. Competitive shooters, rhythm games, fighting games, and racing games expose even small delays more easily. Moonlight offers more tuning options than Steam Link, but it should not be described as universally faster without controlled testing.

Controllers, keyboard, mouse, and touch controls
Controller choices
- USB-C controller: usually the most direct and consistent input path. Telescopic USB-C gamepads also make the phone feel more like a handheld.
- Bluetooth controller: convenient, but latency and disconnections can vary.
- On-screen controls: useful when necessary, but rarely comfortable for games requiring simultaneous camera movement and multiple analog inputs.
Moonlight supports standard Android gamepads and several common Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Its documentation warns that some controllers—particularly certain PlayStation controllers over Bluetooth—may experience latency or disconnection problems. If a controller is unreliable, test it over USB.
When choosing a controller, check Android compatibility, phone-case clearance, button layout, pass-through charging, stick quality, grip comfort, and whether the device appears as standard Android or XInput input. Official product information is available from Backbone, Razer Kishi, GameSir, 8BitDo, Xbox, and PlayStation.
Keyboard and mouse
Keyboard and mouse are useful for strategy, simulation, MMO, and desktop-style games. Moonlight states that they work best on Android 8.0 or later, and mouse capture has additional limitations on older Android versions and some non-SHIELD devices. Android’s behavior can also vary by phone manufacturer and operating-system version.
Touch controls
Touch input is most suitable for turn-based games, card games, simple platformers, and titles with modest button requirements. It is a poor replacement for a physical controller in games that require precise analog movement, camera control, and several simultaneous inputs.

Playing PC games away from home
Moonlight and Sunshine can be used over the internet, but local streaming should work first. The PC must remain powered on or remotely wakeable, and the host location needs sufficient upload capacity. Mobile carrier routing, CGNAT, restrictive public Wi-Fi, and firewall rules can prevent a direct connection.
Safer approaches include:
- A VPN into your home network.
- A trusted mesh-VPN solution.
- Carefully configured port forwarding with strong Sunshine credentials and restrictive firewall rules.
- A suitable hosted or self-managed relay arrangement.
Do not expose a gaming PC casually by forwarding ports without understanding the security implications. A VPN is often easier to reason about, although it may add overhead or latency. The Moonlight setup guide lists the relevant network ports and connection requirements. Its older guidance mentions 5 Mbps or higher upload for certain setups, but that is not a universal modern target: higher resolution and frame rate require more headroom.

Moonlight cannot find the PC
- Confirm both devices are on the same LAN, not separate guest networks.
- Check that Sunshine is running.
- Allow Sunshine through Windows Firewall.
- Disable or reconfigure VPN software that isolates local discovery.
- Disable router client isolation.
- Add the PC manually by its local IP address.
- Restart Sunshine and, if necessary, the router.
Pairing fails
- Open Sunshine at
https://localhost:47990/. - Enter the correct PIN before it expires.
- Check the Sunshine username and password.
- Restart Sunshine and remove then re-add the PC in Moonlight.
- Verify firewall rules.
- Do not attempt remote pairing until local pairing succeeds.
Video stutters while input feels responsive
Suspect Wi-Fi interference, unstable bitrate, phone decoding limits, thermal throttling, mesh handoffs, host encoder overload, or background downloads. Lower resolution or bitrate, try H.264 instead of HEVC or AV1, connect the PC by Ethernet, move closer to the router, and enable Moonlight’s performance overlay. If the PC itself is missing frames, lower the game’s graphics settings.
Input feels delayed but video is smooth
Test a USB controller and a wired PC connection. Reduce bitrate if buffering is occurring, cap the game at a stable 60 FPS, and temporarily disable unnecessary frame generation or post-processing. V-sync, unstable host frame rates, Bluetooth latency, stream buffering, and the phone display’s response time can all contribute.
The screen is black or the game closes
- Launch the desktop first to determine whether the stream itself works.
- Add the game executable manually.
- Try launching through the game’s normal launcher or Steam.
- Confirm the game is using the intended GPU.
- Try windowed or borderless mode.
- Disable HDR temporarily.
- Check game-specific anti-cheat or DRM restrictions.
The game does not detect the controller
- Confirm Android recognizes the controller.
- Test it in Moonlight or another Android game.
- Try USB instead of Bluetooth.
- Set the game to XInput or Xbox controller mode.
- Close other controller-remapping tools.
- Check whether the game is using a controller connected directly to the PC instead of Moonlight’s virtual controller.
- For Steam games, test Steam Input.
Audio crackles or drops
Lower the bitrate, test H.264, disable audio enhancements, check for Bluetooth interference, try wired headphones, and restart the stream after changing codec or audio settings.

Alternatives to local PC streaming
Cloud gaming
Cloud gaming runs the game in a provider’s data center rather than on your PC. It can be the right choice if you do not own a capable computer, but it depends on internet quality, supported games, subscriptions, game ownership rules, regional availability, data limits, queues, and usage restrictions.
Check the current official terms directly for GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Amazon Luna. Plans, prices, catalogs, and eligibility can change.
Running PC games locally with Winlator
Windows compatibility layers such as Winlator can run some PC games directly on compatible Android hardware. This avoids network-streaming latency, but compatibility varies dramatically. A game can fail because of anti-cheat, DirectX or Vulkan support, missing Windows components, launcher requirements, insufficient performance, heat, or battery drain. “Runs” does not necessarily mean “plays well.”

If a game has a good native Android port, it is generally preferable for latency because it does not require video streaming. It may still have different graphics, controls, multiplayer support, or save compatibility from the PC version.
Final recommendation
Use Steam Link if you want the fastest, simplest route to Steam games. Use Moonlight with Sunshine if you want broad launcher support and more control over resolution, bitrate, codecs, and desktop streaming. Connect the PC by Ethernet, use strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi on the phone, begin at 1080p/60, and use a USB controller when input latency matters most.
If you do not own a gaming PC, investigate cloud gaming instead. If you need truly minimal latency for competitive play, use a local gaming device or native Android version. No streaming setup can honestly guarantee zero lag.
