To connect your PS5 by Ethernet, plug a LAN cable into the console’s rear LAN port and an available LAN port on your router or network switch. Then open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, choose Set Up Wired LAN > Connect, and run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
A wired connection can make online play more consistent by avoiding weak Wi-Fi signals and wireless interference. It cannot guarantee faster downloads or lower ping if the limitation is your internet service, router, ISP, game server, or network congestion.
What you need
- A PS5 with a functioning LAN port.
- An Ethernet/LAN cable long enough to reach the network equipment.
- An available LAN port on your router, gateway, or network switch.
- An active internet connection.
Sony does not require a particular cable category. A reputable Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable is normally sufficient for a home PS5 connection. Choose a suitable length, avoid damaged connectors, and route the cable where it will not be pinched, sharply bent, or become a trip hazard. Premium “gaming” cables do not bypass your internet plan’s speed limits.

The PS5 already includes a built-in LAN port, so a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is normally unnecessary.

Where to plug in the cable
The PS5’s LAN port is on the rear of the console. Its exact position and surrounding layout vary between PS5 models and revisions, so identify the port by its Ethernet jack rather than assuming it is in the same place on every console.
Connect the other end to a numbered LAN or Ethernet port on the router. Do not normally use the router’s WAN or Internet port for the PS5; that port is intended for the connection between the router and the modem, ONT, or upstream network.
If your ISP supplies a combined modem/router gateway, use one of its LAN ports. If you have a separate modem and router, connect the PS5 to the router. A direct modem connection is not the normal setup and can fail when the modem does not provide routing and DHCP services.

- Turn on the PS5 and connect the Ethernet cable between the console and the router or switch.
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Go to Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Set Up Wired LAN, then choose Connect.
The PS5 normally obtains its IP address and other network information automatically from the router. You do not need to disable Wi-Fi manually first. The console can retain saved wireless networks for later use, while the wired connection is configured for this network.

Menu capitalization or wording can vary slightly by region and system-software version. If the labels differ, look for the Internet Connection setup screen and its wired LAN option.
How to check whether it worked
On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. The test checks whether the console obtained an IP address and can reach the internet and PlayStation Network.
Also check the physical connection:
- Both plugs should click firmly into place.
- The router or switch may show a link or activity light.
- The PS5 should identify the connection as wired.
- Try launching an online game or starting a small download after the test succeeds.
A successful test confirms basic connectivity, but it does not guarantee that every game server or PlayStation service is available. Game-server outages, PSN outages, strict NAT, ISP congestion, and router filtering can still affect online play.
Using a network switch
An unmanaged Ethernet switch is useful when the router is too far away or all of its LAN ports are occupied. Set it up as follows:

- Connect one switch port to a LAN port on the router.
- Connect the PS5 to another switch port.
- Leave the PS5’s wired network settings on automatic/default values.
A switch expands the number of wired ports; it does not create internet service or inherently make the connection faster. For an ordinary PS5 setup, a small plug-and-play gigabit switch is preferable to a managed switch with unnecessary configuration features.
If the PS5 does not connect
Work through these checks in order:
- Reseat the Ethernet cable at both ends and confirm it is connected to the PS5’s LAN port.
- Make sure the other end is in a router or switch LAN port, not a WAN/Internet port.
- Try another LAN port on the router or switch.
- Try a known-good Ethernet cable.
- Restart the PS5.
- Restart the router or gateway. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance commonly recommends switching it off, waiting at least five minutes, and turning it back on.
- Check whether another device can access the internet through the same router.
- Return to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the wired option again, and run the connection test.
- Check PlayStation Network status before changing advanced router settings.
- Contact your ISP or network administrator if the network requires device registration, authentication, or a captive-portal login.
If the cable appears connected but the PS5 cannot obtain an IP address, DHCP may be disabled or malfunctioning on the router, the switch path may be misconfigured, or the network may require authorization. Hotel, school, office, dormitory, and apartment networks can impose restrictions that the PS5 cannot bypass by itself.
Check IPv4 on advanced networks
PS5 supports IPv6, but it does not support an IPv6-only network. Your router must provide IPv4 connectivity as well. If a newer ISP gateway or advanced home network is configured as IPv6-only, enable IPv4 or dual-stack networking in the router. Contact the router manufacturer, ISP, or network administrator if you are unsure how to do that.

- IP address: Normally supplied automatically by DHCP.
- DHCP host name: Usually left unspecified unless the ISP requires one.
- DNS: Translates domain names into network addresses. Changing it can help with a DNS-specific problem, but it is not a universal gaming-speed fix.
- MTU: Controls packet size. Manual changes are not a routine performance optimization.
- Proxy: Leave disabled unless the network administrator specifically requires a proxy.
Do not apply arbitrary “best DNS” or “best MTU” numbers as guaranteed fixes. A static local IP is mainly relevant to a deliberate router configuration such as port forwarding; automatic addressing is the normal choice. Any manually assigned address must match the router’s subnet and DHCP arrangement.
When a wired connection still does not solve multiplayer problems
Separate four different outcomes:
- Internet access: The PS5 can reach the wider internet.
- PSN access: The console can reach PlayStation services.
- Game-server access: A particular game’s servers are online and reachable.
- NAT behavior: The router and ISP determine how easily the console communicates with other players.
Ethernet can remove Wi-Fi interference and weak-signal problems, but it cannot repair a PSN outage, a game-server outage, upstream packet loss, ISP congestion, or strict NAT caused by the router or ISP.
Sony lists the following ports in troubleshooting guidance for some PlayStation connection errors: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480; UDP 3478, 3479, and 49152–65535. Port forwarding is not part of normal wired setup and should not be treated as a universal fix. It is router-specific, can introduce security and configuration problems, and is best considered only for a diagnosed NAT or service issue.
Alternatives when the router is far away
- Long Ethernet cable: Usually the simplest and most predictable option if it can be routed safely.
- Unmanaged switch: Useful when you need more wired ports near the PS5.
- Mesh Ethernet backhaul: A good option if a mesh node can be wired to the main router and the PS5 can connect to that node. A wireless link between the mesh node and router can reintroduce some Wi-Fi limitations.
- Powerline networking: Convenient when cable runs are difficult, but performance depends heavily on the home’s electrical wiring and interference.
- Wi-Fi bridge/client adapter: Can provide Ethernet near the PS5, but the connection still depends on wireless conditions.
For one console, buying a complete mesh system is usually excessive if a properly routed cable or small switch solves the problem. Likewise, a powerline kit is a compromise rather than an equivalent replacement for a direct Ethernet run.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to turn off Wi-Fi before using Ethernet on PS5?
No. Select the wired LAN option in the Internet Connection setup screen; you do not normally need to delete or disable saved Wi-Fi networks.
Does Ethernet guarantee faster PS5 downloads?
No. It can improve consistency, but download speed is also limited by your internet service, router, cable, network congestion, and the game server.

Can I connect my PS5 to a network switch?
Yes. Connect the switch to a router LAN port, then connect the PS5 to another switch port. Leave the PS5’s network settings automatic.
Why does the PS5 connection test pass but a game remain offline?
The game server may be unavailable, PSN may be experiencing an outage, or the router or ISP may be causing NAT or filtering problems. A successful internet test does not guarantee access to every game service.
