Most PS5 owners do not need every accessory. In 2025, the best purchases were the ones that solved a recurring problem: a second DualSense for local multiplayer, a headset for chat and late-night play, an internal SSD for limited storage, or PlayStation Portal for reliable remote play. Premium controllers, VR hardware, and specialty gear were worthwhile only for specific players.
This is a 2025 buying guide and retrospective. Prices, stock, colors, bundles, and software features can change; any price mentioned below is identified as a historical US price signal rather than a guaranteed current price.

For most households, the sensible starting point is one extra DualSense controller, a headset if you play multiplayer or at night, and additional storage only when the console is regularly full. A charging station is useful when two controllers are used often. A long USB-C cable is cheaper and perfectly adequate if you do not mind wired charging.

Portal, a pro controller, PS VR2, a media remote, a camera, and console covers are situational. Premium HDMI cables are frequently overbought: replace the included cable only if it is damaged, too short, or unable to support the display setup you actually use. External USB drives are useful, but they do not replace an internal SSD for playing PS5 games.
The practical rule is simple: buy an accessory to remove repeated friction, not because it adds an impressive specification.
Best PS5 controller for most players: DualSense
The standard DualSense remains the safest recommendation for PS5 owners. Supported games can use its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, while motion controls, the built-in speaker and microphone, touchpad, headset jack, and normal PS5 menu behavior make it the least-compromised choice.
Buy a second DualSense for couch co-op, competitive local games, or a household that regularly hosts guests. Color and limited-edition versions are cosmetic choices rather than performance upgrades.
Skip a replacement if: your existing controller works properly and you do not need a second player. Put the money toward a headset or storage if those solve a more immediate problem.
Best pro controller: DualSense Edge
DualSense Edge is worthwhile for players who already know how they want to change their controls. It offers remappable controls, custom profiles, adjustable trigger stops, back buttons, interchangeable stick caps, replaceable stick modules, and a carrying case.
Its value is clearest in shooters, racing games, fighting games, and other titles where back buttons or trigger stops change how you play. Sony’s Midnight Black version launched in the United States at $199.99 in February 2025; that is a historical price signal, not a guaranteed September 2026 price. The drawbacks are substantial: high upfront cost, additional expense for replacement stick modules, and generally less favorable battery life than the standard DualSense. It is not automatically better in games that do not benefit from its controls.
Buy it if: you regularly use back buttons, profiles, or trigger stops. Skip it if: you mainly play single-player games, want maximum battery life, or have never felt limited by a standard DualSense.
Third-party controller alternatives
Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded: best for modular layouts
The Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded is aimed at competitive players who want to change the controller’s layout. Its modular design, wireless and wired operation, swappable components, and six-button fight-pad module with Kailh microswitches make it especially interesting for fighting games and players who prefer an offset-stick arrangement.
It should not be treated as a direct DualSense substitute. Before buying, verify the exact model and firmware behavior for adaptive triggers, haptics, motion controls, headset audio, touchpad functions, and wireless versus wired modes. See the official product listing.

Nacon Revolution 5 Pro: best Hall-effect alternative
Nacon’s Revolution 5 Pro supports PS5, PS4, and PC, with programmable buttons, profiles, app-based customization, adjustable weights, and Hall-effect stick technology. Hall-effect sensors can reduce the conventional potentiometer-drift risk, but they do not make a controller failure-proof: calibration, contamination, electronics, and other wear can still cause problems.
Its layout and software are personal preferences. App dependence may be inconvenient for console-only users, and feature support is not identical to DualSense. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and the exact PlayStation listing before purchase.

Choose PULSE Elite when simple PS5-and-Portal integration matters more than chasing a particular third-party audio profile.

Best wireless earbuds: PULSE Explore
PULSE Explore is the clearest fit for Portal-first players who want compact wireless audio. The earbuds use PlayStation Link, include a charging case, have hidden microphones, and support Bluetooth. Sony lists PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite as PC-compatible through their included PlayStation Link USB adapters; details are available on the official PC accessories page.
Earbud fit varies greatly. The charging case adds another battery to maintain, and the price is high compared with ordinary wired earbuds. Do not assume generic Bluetooth earbuds will work wirelessly with PS5 or Portal. A wired headset through Portal’s headset jack remains a dependable fallback.
Premium third-party headsets
Consider Audeze Maxwell 2 for a premium audio-focused setup, while recognizing that weight and price may matter more than audio gains for casual players. Turtle Beach Stealth Pro is aimed at people who want 2.4-GHz wireless, simultaneous Bluetooth, a charging station, a remappable control wheel, and a replaceable-battery approach. Razer BlackShark V3 Pro is a competitive wireless option, and Nacon RIG 900 MAX emphasizes a lighter, broad-device setup.
Sony’s store lists these among PS5-compatible options, but an official listing is not an independent performance ranking. Check the exact PlayStation edition, required USB transmitter, PC and mobile support, microphone reviews, and current manufacturer specifications. Turtle Beach’s Stealth Pro page documents its platform, Bluetooth, transmitter, charging, and control features.

PlayStation Portal is a remote player, not a standalone PS5 or general-purpose tablet. It streams compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on your PS5 and provides a built-in screen with DualSense-style controls. Games requiring a VR headset or additional peripherals beyond supported controllers may be incompatible; consult Sony’s Portal documentation.
As of the 2025 guide period and Sony’s currently published product information, supported regions and software versions may also allow cloud streaming for select games with PlayStation Plus Premium. This depends on region, account status, subscription, supported titles, and current software availability, so verify the official Portal page before treating cloud streaming as a reason to buy.

Buy Portal if your network passes this checklist
- The PS5 is connected to the router by Ethernet where possible.
- Wi-Fi coverage is strong in the place where you will play.
- You have tested for congestion from downloads and simultaneous streaming.
- You want to play around the home or away from home rather than simply use a phone or tablet.
- You understand that streaming quality can deteriorate because of router placement, Wi-Fi interference, upload limitations, or the remote network.
No case, stand, or headset can repair a poor network. For wireless audio, choose a compatible PlayStation Link product; otherwise use Portal’s wired headset connection.
Best storage upgrade: internal M.2 SSD
An internal M.2 SSD is the correct upgrade when you want more playable PS5 storage. It is suited to large digital libraries and households that repeatedly delete and redownload current-generation games. The drive must meet Sony’s current PS5 requirements for PCIe NVMe performance, dimensions, capacity, and heatsinking. Read the current official installation requirements before buying, because firmware and model compatibility matter.
An external USB drive is better for archiving PS5 games you are not currently playing and for installing and playing PS4 games. PS5 games generally need to be copied back to internal storage before they can run. Sony’s catalog includes 5TB external drives and WD_BLACK internal NVMe options, but the listing itself is not a substitute for checking the current requirements.
Compare usable capacity, sustained performance, heatsink inclusion, endurance rating, firmware support, warranty, and price per usable terabyte. Do not buy a drive solely because its advertised sequential speed is high.

DualSense Charging Station
The official charging station docks two DualSense or DualSense Edge controllers. It is a good quality-of-life purchase for two-controller households, shared living rooms, and guest-ready setups. It is unnecessary if one controller is charged reliably with a cable. Sony documents the station in its accessory catalog.
Cables, stands, and covers
A long USB-C cable is inexpensive and avoids another battery purchase. Replace the HDMI cable only for damage, length, or a verified display problem; the included PS5 cable may already support your needed mode. An officially licensed 10-foot PowerA cable is one available option, but premium branding alone does not improve picture quality.
Vertical stands and console covers are mainly stability, cable-management, and cosmetic products. Check compatibility separately for the original PS5, PS5 Slim, and PS5 Pro. A stand or cover designed for one model should never be assumed to fit another.

Accessibility and specialty accessories
Access controller
Access is not a conventional pro controller. It is a customizable accessibility kit designed to help players with disabilities find more comfortable button and stick arrangements and reduce fatigue. Evaluate reach, mobility, mounting needs, fatigue, switch requirements, and the specific games being played. One configuration will not suit every player, and one kit may not be sufficient for every setup.
Access can be combined with other controllers and accessibility peripherals. Sony’s licensed-products catalog lists the Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit as a possible complement, not a universal solution.
PS VR2
PS VR2 is a major platform upgrade, not a small accessory. Budget for the headset and any desired charging or storage gear, then consider play space, cable management, comfort, motion sensitivity, prescription-lens needs, and the available game library. Racing wheels, fight sticks, and rhythm controllers
These are excellent only when they match the games you already play. Racing wheels suit Gran Turismo and other racing titles; fight sticks and leverless controllers suit fighting games; the PDP RIFFMASTER targets compatible rhythm games. Sony’s licensed-products catalog lists products from Logitech, HORI, Nacon, PDP, and Victrix. Confirm game support and the exact PS5 edition.
How to choose without overspending
Score a candidate from 1 to 5 on use-case impact, PS5 integration, compatibility, comfort, reliability, battery convenience, value at the observed price, replacement-part availability, setup complexity, and buyer-disappointment risk. Do not turn the result into a single unexplained “overall” score.

Common buying mistakes
- Calling a $200 controller better for casual players simply because it has more buttons.
- Treating Portal as a standalone handheld instead of a network-dependent remote player.
- Assuming every wireless headset works with Portal or PS5 over ordinary Bluetooth.
- Assuming Hall-effect sticks are drift-proof.
- Assuming third-party controllers preserve haptics, adaptive triggers, motion, speaker, microphone, and every touchpad function.
- Confusing an external USB archive drive with playable internal PS5 expansion.
- Buying a stand, cover, or dock without checking the exact PS5 model.
- Using a 2025 launch price as though it were the current price.
Troubleshooting essentials
No wireless audio on Portal
- Confirm the exact headset or earbud model and whether it supports PlayStation Link.
- Update Portal, PS5, headset, and USB-adapter firmware.
- Check that the adapter is being used with the supported device and that pairing is complete.
- Use a wired headset through Portal’s headset jack if wireless compatibility remains unavailable.

Stick drift or controller failure
No controller is guaranteed drift-proof. Hall-effect technology can reduce one common potentiometer-related failure mode, while replaceable modules can reduce downtime and long-term replacement cost. Still check warranty terms, calibration behavior, contamination, and the availability and price of replacement parts.
Poor Portal streaming
Connect the PS5 to Ethernet, improve router placement and 5-GHz or newer Wi-Fi coverage, pause competing downloads and streams, test near the router, compare local and away-from-home use, update both devices, and confirm Remote Play settings. Diagnose with a locally installed PS5 game before blaming the Portal hardware.
